By night a wine bar, and by day a place attempting to get the throngs of shoopers from Princes Street through its dorrs by offering hard-to-beat special deals.

The Newsroom's menu is simple and cheap. Nothing over £5.00, nothing you won't be immediately familiar with. It's one of those menus that tries to bridge the gap between traditional pub food and gastro-pub quality, and manages neither. But then, for a fiver for a curry or cheeseburger and fries, it doesn't need to. You're not here for a unique dining experience, you're here to gain sustenance and energy ready to enage with shoppers barging into you again.

And, to be fair, the Newsroom does exactly that. It took a while to get served initially, but once I did the drinks arrived within a minute and the food followed rapidly on its heels.

It won't, by any means delight you, but you won't leave feeling disappointed or ripped off, and you will be full.

The staff are courteous, the service is swift, the food is lacklustre but does its job.

The complimentary newspapers are a welcome gesture but, seriously, who chooses them? The Sun, Star or Express...Ah well...

Went here for lunch on Saturday after a spot of Christmas shopping. A bit dark perhaps for a lunchtime meal and probably suits an evening more. However, we sat at the window for more light (although a low table doesn't really work when you're eating!). The sofas were comfy but did appear a bit dirty. Not really surprising though for a place that is primarily a drinking venue.

The menu is all under £5 so it won't break the bank. We both opted for 'homemade' aberdeen angus cheeseburgers. Not sure that the burgers were homemade at all as they didn't seem to have the texture of the usual homemade type of burger. However, it was still pleasant enough. The relish in the burger was a little sweet but didn't overpower the burger. It was accompanied by fries and a side salad. The fries were cooked perfectly and the salad was actually very nice. Watch out for the Heinz ketchup in the bottle on the table. It's either not Heinz or watered down with vinegar.

All in all, it was alright for a quick bite to eat but it's not going to hurry into my list of places to choose to eat.

I was there one Saturday afternoon coming back from shopping with my girlfriend, we both had their burgers, her being a laaydeee she chose a falafel burger they do which she said was amazing (if you like that sort of thing). I, being a man, had the so-called Anchorman (quite amusing) which was a 12oz bad boy. Never seen a burger so big, probably about 20oz! Service was cheery and their drinks are excellent, missus had some cocktails, bit early for me mind but their Guinness is nice and cold! Definitely be back.

I hosted a fancy dress disco party in the function room downstairs on Saturday night for about 45 people. The Newsroom staff from the first meet up couldn't have been more helpful, efficient and friendly. They allowed me to decorate the place to my theme and the 2 members of staff on the night were FANTASTIC!

The Newsroom was very accommodating and my party could not have been more perfect. The staff even allowed us to stay inside to wait for our taxi as it was raining heavily - even though it was by that time 'closed'. I definitely recommend this as a venue. 5 stars!

Absolutely nothing wrong with this place. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere good, we sometimes go to the quiz on a Thursday which is always a good laugh. And in response to the comment about who chooses the papers... What is wrong with having the most popular British Paper in the pub (The Sun). It's lighthearted and not too taxing. I think what people are looking for. If you want to read some high brow snooty paper maybe somewhere else would be more suitable. Like a Library, or your house. :-)

The newsroom has dramatically changed since its none-too-popular review from The Herald last year.

Since then they have brought in Gordon Wilson who has turned it round by changing the deco and lighting with a sound system second to none.

He has thirty year's experience in dealing with some of the top bars, restaurants and clubs in the world.

With him on board the simple rules are applied and executed to a standard that the public appreciate.

Food is well priced aswell as the wide variety of drinks including cocktails two for one deals and feel good music which is bound to help you escape that troubles of the day.

From relaxing surroundings with wifi connection and excellent lattes through the week to a flick of the switch Friday and Saturday to a trendy pre-club venue with some top DJs getting you right into the weekend groove with some pumping sounds.

Just ghastly unwelcoming staff. Went here for the first time this evening for "joyful" work reunion (location is central). Felt unwelcome from the get-go with staff unwilling to serve. After 30 minutes of standing at the bar to be served, my colleague and I complained and asked to speak to the manager... only to be told by the rude "bartender" that he was the manager.

Never again.
