This place has the potential to be good but I have been disappointed several times here with risottos being undercooked and other dishes being too rich. It can be quite hit or miss depending on the menu you get.

Went here with my husband the other day and just in time for the pre-theater dinner. Unfortunately we were just going to a movie but the deal suited us fine. I think it was two courses, a starter and a main, for 9.99. A pretty good deal I thought.

He had a greek salad and I had the chicken liver and bacon pate with bacon to start. The salad was good, chock full of nice feta cheese and a good deal of olives. The pate was ok, not as bacony as I anticipated (which was good b/c I am not a huge fan of really porky pate) and it came with thick toasted baguette and butter.

For the mains I had the sweet chili prawn salad and he had the steak with black pepper sauce. The prawns were plentiful and well cooked. I love the contrast of hot and cold foods, the hot prawns over the cool salad. I was disappointed of the huge pool of hot sweet chili sauce at the bottom of my bowl and the sauce could have been a bit lighter on the sugar. Overall, a decent dish. The steak was well cooked as well but could have used a lot more seasoning. The sauce was not as flavourful as it could have been but came with a huge beauiful baked potato.

We were too stuffed for dessert. Overall, a good place with decent prices. I would recommend if you are in the are especially if there in time for the pre-dinner deal!

This place has to get a great rating from me!

I went in last night with no notice to see if they had a table for 3. At first it looked like we were going to be unlucky, but they decided that if we could order and be finished in an hour, a table was ours. This suited us fine. We ran slightly over time, but instead of being abrupt with us, they offered to move us to the front of the restaurant to have desert and finish the wine, but not in a rude way. So top marks from me for hospitality.

The food was, in the words of my other half - "yummy!!" The vegetarian fajitas were great and so was the burger and chips I had. They were very generous with the condiments on the side without them even being asked for.

The desert was the icing on the cake - a perfect white chocolate cheesecake with butterscotch sauce... indulgent but not sickly. Only one disappointment... we only ordered 1!!!

£46 for 3 mains, 1 desert and a nice bottle of house white - no complaints about the price either.

The staff were very nice and cheerful at all times.

I would heartly recommend this place to anyone - this is my second visit, and I've yet to be disappointed.

Just been back a week ago - they fitted us in last minute due to being disappointed elsewhere, and not one of the 6 of us had any complaints.

Food was great, and the wine was great aswell.

Top marks again!

Came here not too long ago. Was pleseantly surprised by the chef who meticuliously cooked our dishes to a good standard. You could tell that each dish had been prepared carefully and with thought. The soup was fantastic as was the steak burger. Flavours were distinctive and not overpowered with non essential ingredients. All dishes were simply cooked but very tasteful. For the price we paid, we were definitely all full by the time we left. The only downside may be the dim lighting. Make sure you get a window seat.

Awesome menu which leaves you wondering what to have without confusing. Possibly the best ribs I have ever had in my life! The sauce is tremendous.

I left off one star as despite all of my table asking for medium rare steaks they were all presented as medium apart from one. I would expect a steakhouse to be able to get this bit every time.

Some smashing strong red wines on the menu too.

I've eaten at the Smoke Stack twice now - my second visit about a year after the first was much better though I'd still be hard pressed to return. It is important to say that the food has always been a hit. The first time I went we shared calamari and a caprese salad. The mozarella was some of the best I'd ever had. A friend ordered the steak with drambuie sauce and in the end decided that while the sauce wasn't horrible, he would have preferred his steak solo.

Both times I've been there I ordered the Blackened Salmon which, while doesn't quite have the kick you would expect with "blackened" has been cooked beautifully very tasty both times. Basically, the food is quite good - not spectacular, but definitely good and worth the price.

My primary complaint has always been the service. On my first visit we wanted to split our salads and starters into two courses, essentially having a four-course meal. Apparently that was the most difficult concept in the world for our waitress to grasp. She also didn't know the wine list at all, and - after first forgetting our wine completely - had to come back and have us point it out to her because she had no idea what we were talking about.

With two waitresses sitting at the table I'm not sure if we were extra critical, but we were definitely unimpressed. Finally, after a - not very impressive - dessert we were *immediately* approached by our waitress and someone else we assumed was the manager and asked to leave, as there were people waiting for our table. We were never informed that our reservation had a time limit and had honestly only JUST finished our desserts when brought the check and essentially kicked out. A four course meal with drinks for four people doesn't run cheap. After spending that much in a restaurant we were floored at being asked to leave, especially in such a rude manner.

As I said my second visit was better, but same as before, the service left something to be desired - only this time it was an overly-attentive waiter who checked on us every 5 minutes.

I could have just been very unlucky in my experiences but there are so many other great places to eat in Edinburgh, I'd suggest going elsewhere.
