The Witchery by the Castle, 352 Castlehill, EH1 2NF, Edinburgh
Despite having lived in Edinburgh on and off (more on than off really) for nearly 10 years I had yet to properly experience the Witchery. For a long time it has been viewed as one of the special places in the city, and mention of plans to dine there seems to generate expressions of “wooooo” from other people. The ambience and setting is really nice. I can imagine that the gothic feel of the place appeals to tourists but I also appreciated the fact that the restaurant was busy but not noisy.
The menu was absolutely fantastic, I wanted to try almost everything but settled on smoked eel starter, lamb for main course and chocolate torte to finish. The wine list is not a wine list, more a catalogue. Thankfully I wasn’t choosing or I would still be there, although if you are having trouble there is a sommelier on hand to advise. The smoked eel was excellent, with lovely subtle flavours. The main course I had was perhaps the best lamb dish I have ever had, and I reckon I know a fair bit about the stuff having grown up on a sheep farm. I was amazed at how tender the meat was – it practically melted in my mouth. The chocolate torte was very chocolaty but not too rich, a nice way to finish the meal.
The bill for four people came to a lot (over £100 per head I think) – partly down to the three bottles of wine that we had – but thankfully I wasn’t paying. I have to say that, all things considered, this was probably the best meal I have had in Edinburgh, so if you want to go somewhere special – try the Witchery.

With a magnificent reputation I went here expecting great things. I was let down. Whilst the staff were fine and the décor enchanting, the food was not particularly appealing. None the less, it seems to get its share of glamour. At the table on one side was Mark Owen (Take That) and on the other side was Brian Ferry. This did not make up for a lacklustre performance from the chefs though. I wouldn't bother if I were you.

I ate here recently for a special occasion, otherwise it's not the sort of place I would usually go. The food was excellent although a little over expensive. Definitely worth going if you want to try something a bit different (roe deer with chocolate sauce?!). The staff were also excellent - attentive without being annoying, very polite, and not as stuffy as I first imagined. The wine list is MASSIVE. It really does cater for all tastes (and purse sizes). So if you know exactly what you are after then you are fine, otherwise there is alot of reading to do!
Overall, very good, but best to save for a special occasion.

I have to say there was noone famous there when we went but some man did get down on one knee and propose to his girlfriend and the waiting staff all clapped and cheered...as did we...like something out of an american rom/com. It's that kind of restaurant. Decor is like it is from the film set of Narnia, excellent food especially the butter and bread varieties you get whilst waiting for your starters. We didn't order the £1000 bottle of wine off the menu but instead the cheapest on the menu at £24. For a fancy night out that you'll pay the price for I'd recommend but for the one off occasion.

Well, the place is gorgeous. The food is not really worth the money UNLESS you go for the £12 pre theatre menu, in which case you can't go wrong.

It was the best steak tartare I have ever had. the aviance was superb. I was suprise the service wasn't as good as I hoped for, my wife actually had to ask the waitress for another bottle of wine; it was because I was american our table didnt get the service my wife hoped for. She is scottish and praised The Witchery, she felt let down. I'm an established artist and we are gonna be back in December. My hat is off to your chefs, food was great. Jack and Pam
