Operate a ridiculous door policy at weekends - my brother and I got thrown out on Saturday when the doorman realised we knew another group of guys in there. Despite this the clientele on a Saturday night is generally 90% male. This place is worth avoiding.

I think Mr Davidson's review is slightly unfair! Although they may operate a ridiculous door policy (being a girl I have never experienced those particular problems) I think Villager is a great restaurant/bar to visit. The staff are friendly and it has an atmospheric and unique interior. Furthermore, they have just got a new food and cocktail menu which I think is great. I highly recommend their mushroom risotto and venison burger.

Ok, went here for an impromptu Sunday nosh. She had very tasty peanutty chicken satay while I had a very tasty leek and spud soup (inc very nice bread and butter).
Then I had what I feel was a disappointing haddock and chips - it was just a bit bland. She had the venison burger which was as Rachel said, very nice.
Tricky menu if you are looking for low-carb options.
Service was friendly and generally fine, music was good and not too loud and my chips were tasty. Didn't have dessert as we were in a rush. 34 quid including 2 drinks and tip. Not cheap but not scary either. Starters were the best bit all round.
Wouldn't turn my nose up at it. If they showed sports I'd go here instead of frankies.

We went to The Villager yesterday early evening for some food. I have been there on several occasions for drinks but never for some scran. It was very good.
We were served by the one waiter who was excellent, very friendly and helpful. We had a bit of a bit of a mish mash of food – one main between us but a few side orders and starters – all at the same time. It worked!
The main we opted for was a chorizo and chicken salad, the other bits and bobs we ordered were prawn tempura (excellent – HUGE prawns), garlic and mozzarella bread (Amazing – mouth is watering thinking about it again), home made hummus with ciabatta (good – hummus wasn’t quite right, bit too much tahini), potato wedges (good). I was suitably stuffed after picking and mixing but we still had space for pudding – a homemade raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake (divine)
The food was very good and the tap water was delicious (they present it in a carafe with half a cucumber, bits of watermelon and some mint – very nice touch).
The décor is very cool and the music great – in total for all the food as well as a bloody Mary and a vodka tonic it came to £35. Excellent value for money – I imagine I will be back there soon!

Disagree with a lot of the above. Door policy is a bit harsh though I agree, but the Guinness is good when I'm there (I'm Irish, I know a good Guinness), the music is excellent, food's always great, proper coffee service and the staff are friendly and efficient.

The door policy is indeed a joke but once you inform them you are friends of the sexy bar staff, you're in. Quirky laid back atmosphere and some nice stencil art on the walls.

This place probably has the worst toilets in the whole of Edindburgh - there are public toilets in a lot better nick than their's. Hmm what else, the Guinness is shocking, and they've got some anal policy about moving chairs around. "I'm sorry sir that's a fire exit route". Fire exit route? You've got a huge bloody plant pot blocking the door.
Skip it go next door to Bar Kohl.
