Whighams Wine Cellars, 13 Hope Street, EH2 4EL, Edinburgh

I went in here with my wife last Sunday night when they had some live jazz on and it was brilliant. I couldn't believe there was no cover charge for the music, but seeing as how it's not a cheap drink option I guess there is some balance there. I reckon if you went in on any night you'd be very happy with the wine selection anyway, but when you add in some really good jazz for free on a Sunday....seriously good.

The decor is fairly upmarket, but not so much that it'd put you off if you weren't dressed up. Their was a mixture of people in suits and ties and others in jeans and t-shirts. All staff were very smartly presented, courteous and knowledgeable about wine and made some good recommendations for us when we wanted to try something new.

The wine menu is not huge, but large enough to give you good choices without having to spend too much time thinking about it, it even had Chateau Mussar from Lebanon which isn't a common find but an excellent one. You can buy by the glass or by the bottle (some options were bottle only), from memory the cheapest glass would be just under £4, going up to maybe £12, with bottles from about £16 up to perhaps £65 (or more), so it's not a cheap drink option but it is a good one. I noticed they even have a few craft beers on tap as well as a few nice bottles in the fridge.

The food menu looked amazing, next time we plan to dine there. Before that though we'll definitely be back for more jazz and wine next Sunday.

I've been to Whighams 4 times with a couple of months between each visit. Each time the menu has been completely different and I've never failed to find something a bit unusual.

They specialise in seafood but it's definitely not the only option. The menu is fairly small but everything on it is lush. (mussels... yum!)

I didn't give them five stars because I have a sweet tooth which has twice been left unsatisfied by the Whighams menu.
