Shamoli by woozyss - 4.5 out of 5

I've been to Shamoli three times in the last two months and will be back again soon. What a grand idea, thai and Indian food within the one restaurant, great for a group who cannot chose which they prefer or to mix your courses.

I went with a group of 5, we shared indian veg pakora and thai spring rolls for starters. Plentiful starters and very tasty. For my main course I had thai chicken with veg, garlic, oyster sauce. Just the right hint of chilli in it and not too oily or salty like Thais I have had before. One pal had thai with chicken and cashew nuts which she loved and the others had a mix of karahi, tikka masala and hot hot curry. All loved their mains.

The staff here are very friendly, but not too in your face. They do not rush you at all, we were there on a Friday night, went in at half seven and left about eleven. Busy place and a great location right on the Royal Mile.

I love Shamoli and will be heading back again soon.

Only about 9 tables so the service is good and it's a quiet atmosphere.

Food is very good!

MULTIPLE 5 star reviews? Is it as good as it's hyped up to be? READ ON dear readers, read on with bated curry breath and trepidation!

One of the Platinum Blonde's favourite hang-outs, surprisingly I've never been to what's been regarded (and I can only back this up apocryphically) the 'oldest' most 'established' Indian restaurant in Edinburgh. Right next to the Liquid Rooms, I've been assured it can be quite noisy during an Evol club night. Or any other club night. I can assure you though, that Khushi's is rather noisy in it's own right, and I was practically shouting to my dinner partner trying to hold a conversation against the gaggle of hen nights, student graduation parties, families, and the throngs and throngs of Indian cuisine diners. Nice post-modern James Bond-villian decor though. You can see the kitchen and everything, with waiters hovering about.

And if there was an exotically subcontinental James Bond villian (as Ian Fleming would imaginate him to be. Vin Daloo fr'instance) this is precisely the food he'd eat! Here's what me and the Platinum Blonde had:

Starters: Samosa & Chicken Pakora (garnished with a ginger, and pickled carrot salad with yoghurt chilli dip).

Mains: King Prawn Curry & Lamb Karahi, served with boiled rice.

All in all, the cuisine? Excellent! Hell, they better be for the price I'm paying. Fantastic haute cuisine presentation, great tastes, latent heat (spicy, but not too spicy. Just right, as it lingers in the background). The meat and curries cooked to perfection, lovely moist juicy tender lamb, and not a rubbery prawn in sight. Absolutely delicious.

So why such a low score? (3.5 out of 5)

This would be a 4, if it weren't for the rushed atmosphere. A laidback place this is not, and I like to eat my curries laid back. I did get to stay for quite a while though after polishing off the plates, so for that I'd also be coming back to explore what else is on the menu (yum!) but due to it's supersized dining experience (in which I feel like I've gatecrashed someone's massive wedding dinner celebrations and there's no-one I know in the room and where the hell is the bridge and groom?) it's a bit of a downer there. Still, if one can get used to the spice I suppose I'll take to the space soon enough.

Have i mentioned it's a Bring Your Own Booze place? That probably accounts for all the 5-star reviews for this place you can read at your own comfort. Note: This place seemingly doesn't serve alcohol, so you better bring your own!

One sentence review? - If you want some nice up-marketedly priced rice, hurry here for some curry.

We went to this restaurant recently when we were in Edinburgh for a vacation. Our B&B recommended it and we tried it and loved it. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was delicious! We went back a couple days later because we liked it so much. If we are ever back in Edinburgh, we will go back here for a meal.

This place is a perfect gem tucked down a side street in The Shore. Dinner here a week ago was fantastic. The shared veg/meat/fish antipasto had variety and everything was delicious. A main of fish was superb, although perhaps a little small if you're a large eater. This isn't so much of a problem if you're happy to fill up with bread, as they are accommodating when you ask for extra. With a bit of space for dessert we ordered lime cheesecake and vanilla icecream special with amaretto and espresso to pour over. This was divine. All in all a lovely meal, and very reasonable at £75 for 3 courses and a bottle of wine for 2.

Service was also outstanding from the owner who is attentive but not overbearing.

A bunch of us stopped in here for the sole purpose of getting some food in our bellies after we'd been out drinking for most of the day. We wouldn't normally have gone into this Rose Street pub crawl/stag/hen party trap, but we weren't keen to spend George Street money on some basic stomach lining. So it did its job - I had fish and chips. It was fine - almost certainly frozen - not fresh, but only £6.99.
Don't go out your way!

I went there for a lunch special offer last Saturday and it was a mixed bag. I had the burger which was large and delicious, but all the sandwiches (4 ordered) came with french fries rather than the chunky chips billed on the menu. This was a huge disappointment as they were lukewarm and hinted of something they may have purchased at a famous fast food restaurant around the corner. When we asked the waitress what happened to the chunky chips, as we'd seen the only other dining booth next to us get a plateful minutes earlier, she asked if we wanted to get the kitchen to peel some potatoes and make some up. Maybe we should've said yes.

After seeing rave reviews for this restaurant I ventured there last night and had a good, not great, meal. The rainbow roll was delicious but very small for £12, so much so that after 2 rainbow rolls, edamame and tempura veggies my partner and I had to also order soft shell crab. This place is definitely more expensive than other Japanese restaurants, and the quality doesn't quite make it value for money compared to its competition. Cosy atmosphere and attentive waiting staff though.
