The Curry House

5 Featherhall Avenue, EH12 7TG, Edinburgh

0.5 from David Carruthers (18%) on July 9th, 2008 (2 months ago)

The worst Indian takeaway I have ever eaten. I moved to Corstorphine and ordered from them and got a curry that tasted of nothing but vinegar. Fast forward 6 months and I had forgotten all about my bad experience with this takeaway and ordered from them again. I took the lid off the curry and got a strong smell of vinegar and then ate some and realised that it tasted of nothing but vinegar and I then remembered this is exactly what happened 6 months before when i bought from them. Well I will never order from them again - how they get away with making such poor curries I do not know. I have eaten in many Indian takeaways in Edinburgh but this place is very poor and at least they could try and make a curry taste like a curry not chicken soaked in vinegar.

Italian Home Bakery

7 Baker's Place (Kerr Street), EH3 6SY, Edinburgh

0.5 from Meng (92%) on July 8th, 2008 (2 months ago)

My 3-word review: Italian $h!t Bakery.

This place USED to be the dog's bollocks around 4 years ago. Authentic Italian pastries, hot-steaming pizza slices, creamy chicken pesto sarnies. Now with a change of ownership, it's the dog's doo-doo.

Been coming here on occassion to pick up lunch just to tentatively try out what they have on offer, and it's pretty pretty dire. Here's why:

Linguine a la chorizo picante? Just dried re-microwaved pasta not even fit for a garbage bin to eat, with what tastes like food-processed scraps from leftover pizza paste. Yes, you are meant to microwave it, and yes, it doesn't improve the flavour.

Baked goods are terrible (most of them seem pre-bought/pre-baked from elsewhere). That, and the presentation alone should give you fair warning that all is not what it seems. The standout awful pastry, the 'Strawberry' Slice, tastes as if someone chewed up Strawberry-flavoured bubble gum, spat it out, wrapped it up in dried-up offcuts of a Gregg's pasty, baked it, and charged you a pound for the pleasure of eating a pink-coloured bath sponge. So yummy it makes Gregg's freshly-baked goods taste like Masterchef-inspired masterpieces.

Creme de la creme is the bacon, cheese and tomato ciabatta. Within a month or two of coming here, the cutbacks are beginning to show. What was once a nice slice of emmental procured from the J.Mellis cheesemonger from next door is now industrial-grade bucket shredded cheese (the type cheapo takeaways put on pizzas and chips to serve to drunken punters too sozzled to realise they'd never eat such food sober) spread over squashed and tasteless tomato.

The worst offender? Uncooked bacon in the ciabbata. After receiving this substandard sarnie (now that I think about it, calling it substandard is far too high a compliment) 'toasted' on far too low a setting, it was only after eating it 2/3rds of the way with the tomatoes and cheese squished out did I realise I had been eating raw lukewarm bacon. It gave me a stomache for the rest of the day. Buyer beware.

I should have poked a finger down my throat, puked it up on a plate, brought it back to the shop, and asked for my money back. But I won't because they'd likely scrape it all off and baked it into a lasagna to serve back to unsuspecting punters, so I refuse to give them that satisfaction of being a food-processor that pays them to masticate their garbage. Never again. Italian Home Bakery? Italian Prone Fakery more like!

The score? 0.5 Stars - Gran Dizgraziato. And you can quote me on that.

The Dell Inn

27 Lanark Road, EH14 1TG, Edinburgh

I wished I had known about this site before I had dined at this place. I totally agree with some of the previous comments. Service was good but it didn't make up for the food that was served. It was far from okay! Very disappointing. Judging from some other diners' comments that I overheard they weren't too impressed either. I for one will not be going back.

New Xian Chinese Carry Out

101 Comiston Rd, EH10 6AG, Edinburgh

0.5 from Mrs Brown (18%) on June 23rd, 2008 (3 months ago)

My husband and I ordered takeaway from new Xian last night and it took 1 hr and 5 mins for delivery. He has been violently sick all night as a result of food poisoning. I suspect our food sat waiting for quite some time prior to delivery, and this has been the source of the food poisoning. We have used this takeaway once or twice before but will not be using it again.

Awful... waited 2 hours for main course when I had my burger it was pink... there was 18 of us (no one liked it) and we gave 2 months' notice and they still could not get it right... and when we complained... the manager was the most ignorant person (notice I did not say man!!!) I have ever met in my life... Don't waste your money going there!!!

Jongleurs

Easily the worst meal I have ever paid for, it was cheap but the profit margin must still be huge, the food prep was probably done in the '80s, in mozambique. And it had clearly been cooked a long time before we got there, perhaps in Paraguay. Who knows?

If you find some sod has booked you there for a stag/hen do, or office night out, eat before you get there, I did, and felt vey smug when everyone else in the group had to dash out for chips before the comedy.

Loch Fyne Restaurant

Yes Yes Yes oh fantastic, Loch Fyne restaurant in Edinburgh, if it's as good as the origional we're in for a treat!!!

I went, I tried to get a table but couldn't. (Ah I hear you all saying "he should have booked!"). The place was practically empty, I asked the nice Maitre D for a "table for two please".

"Sorry sir it's only bookings". I looked around expecting to see a large queue forming behind me... nothing!

"You can have this leaflet which tells you all about the restaurant, and then next time phone us to reserve your table".

What next time! Maybe in a couple of years... I'll just drive to the original thanks.

We had a Thai curry take away from Mya. We paid £28 for two meals. It was terrible, really terrible. They might be good for Indian curry, but jeez bad bad Thai!

The Dell Inn

27 Lanark Road, EH14 1TG, Edinburgh

0.5 from Carolyn (18%) on May 1st, 2008 (5 months ago)

Went there on Saturday (26/4/08) for lunch. Plenty of staff having a great chat with each other. We had steak sandwiches and the rump steak was full of gristle. Place was very quiet. Will honestly say we won't be back even though the cook apologized. Sorry Dell Inn but you need to pull your socks up big time.

Baroque

39-41 Broughton Street, EH1 3JU, Edinburgh

0.5 from IrishScot (40%) on April 15th, 2008 (5 months ago)

Last week we booked a table for 6 people to eat at 7pm.

We arrived just before 7pm to find that although they had the reservation written in their book, they hadn't sorted out anwhere for us to sit - unless it was the table with the wrong name, that wasn't in their book???? Hhhmmm...

When we asked the staff where we were to sit, they organised 2 small tables against the wall with stools packed tightly around it that didn't afford any elbow room for us to eat. And this was with a grumpy manageress - hardly the kind of service you expect.

Thus we left to the Smoke Stack down the road which was able to fit us in, no problem, and with plenty of space - that's what I would call good service.

I'll never consider going to Baroque again.
