Gourmet Burger Kitchen

137 George Street, EH2 4JY, Edinburgh

1 from LA (17%) on August 26th, 2008 (3 months ago)

Waited ages for a burger that was both burnt and cold at the same time. Quite an impressive feat. No atmosphere, no service and very surly staff that seemed miserable to be there. Will definitely not be back.

Henrick's

1 Barclay Place, EH10 4HW, Edinburgh

1 from mdavidson (91%) on August 18th, 2008 (3 months ago)

Despite living only round the corner and drinking hear regularly I only dined here for the first time recently. Unfortunately it was one of the worst pub meals I have ever had. I ordered sausage and mash with rich gravy - usually a fairly safe bet. What I got was sausage and mash but not the kind you would expect to pay £7 for. The sausages were small, bland and cheap. The mash was lumpy and a bit slimey. The gravy was like brown water - thin, tasteless and definitely not rich. It was one of the least attractive plates of food I have ever seen - including those cooked by flatmates during student days.

The meals which my companions had did not look much better, they ordered beef burgers with mozarella and bacon but when they arrived they had no bacon and were covered in bright orange grated cheese. Very poor.

In future I will probably return to Henricks for drinks but definitely not to eat. I wish I had gone to the Golf Tavern instead as I noticed they are now serving Crombie's sausages which should be a real treat.

Frankenstein

26 George IV Bridge, EH1 1EN, Edinburgh

1 from SHESFAMILY (34%) on August 15th, 2008 (3 months ago)

I attended a wedding reception here on a Saturday at midday approximately 4 weeks ago. It was my first and last visit. A buffet was laid on and it certainly wasn't cheap but the food was - nasty deep fried mini bhajis, cheeseballs stuffed with jalapeno peppers, dried chicken wings, mini kievs definitely frozen!!! and sandwiches... that was the choice! Absolutely shocking. As for the service... two young lads looking hungover who I felt for a happy occassion being celebrated by all around them, would have been better suited to working at the local morgue. AVOID!

Buffet King

6a Nicolson Street, EH8 9DH, Edinburgh

1 from Stamford (17%) on August 12th, 2008 (3 months ago)

AVOID.

Extremely limited selection of food and the food there was is tough and grisly.

Much better Chinese restaurants in Edinburgh like China China in the Omni Centre and Jimmy Chungs on Lothian Road

99 Hanover Street

99 Hanover Street, EH2 1DJ, Edinburgh

Contrary to other reviewers, I entirely disagree. A member of the bar staff was VERY rude, believed he was better than anyone he may be serving! We visited evening of Sunday 27th July, will not go back as being spoken to like that by someone is unacceptable. Awful attitude, very offended. Surroundings are pleasant enough, but don't compensate for being spoken to in the way we were. A bad apple, but unfortunately does not alter opinions. Sort your staff out.

Tempus

George Hotel, EH2 2PB, Edinburgh

1 from Lighty (17%) on June 25th, 2008 (5 months ago)

Was looking forward visiting Tempus but was very disappointed. The service was slow and unhelpful. We were not informed of what dishes were unavailable and of course tried to order the very same dishes. I was delivered a starter I never ordered. My partner's £17 main course Halibut was either off or just tasted plain terrible. No apology offered. Was then charged for starter we never ordered, Halibut we never ate and complained about and charged £5 for a double Macchiato. Effectively £90 for a very unenjoyable and substandard meal. Far off the pace as far as George Street standards go. Definitely won't be back :-(

The Dell Inn

27 Lanark Road, EH14 1TG, Edinburgh

1 from SHESFAMILY (34%) on June 24th, 2008 (5 months ago)

We visited the Dell inn (22/06/2008) for what we thought a nice roast sunday dinner. The drinks that we ordered arrived less than two minutes after ordering and the food less than ten minutes. Food arrived and the frozen veg was bland, texture like rubber and ghastly. Potatoes were undercooked both types. Yorkshire puddings soggy and the presentation of the food was awful. Whilst the service was effecient and the waitress pleasant, we weren't at any time asked if everything was okay. When the waitress did come to clear our plates again at lightning speed, we were then asked did we enjoy it. It was obvious that we hadn't and when I explained why I was told, I'll pass your comments on to the chef. The manager (Bill) was present on this day and made no effort to come and discuss our complaint. There was no apology nor reduction on the bill (all in approx £34). When I enquired as to what the chef said, I was once again told "Your comments have been passed on" only thing is nobody wanted to comment on them! I have previously worked in the hotel and catering trade for ten years (restaurants & 5* establishments) in this country and abroad, so I think it's fair to surmise that I know what I am talking about. I will not return there again nor will my family, relatives, friends nor workmates after reading this review. It's a shame as the location is nice but the Chef/Cook definitely lets this place down... and as for the Manager he clearly doesn't understand his role or responsibility as a manager. This place is one to avoid folks!

Howies

208 Bruntsfield Place, EH10 4DH, Edinburgh

1 from David Young (17%) on June 21st, 2008 (5 months ago)

Recently had a meal at Howies, with a seven-year-old; we booked because they make a big show of being child friendly. Nothing could be further from the truth. A horrible experience. I did complain the next day and got the 'standard' Howies brush-off via email i.e. we were at fault and not them.

The food is okay, but they don't actually know what the word 'service' means. If you're a hen party looking for a quick meal it's clearly fine, but for the rest of the population it's best missed.

Cramond Brig

Cramond Bridge, EH4 6DY, Edinburgh

1 from Carolyn (13%) on May 25th, 2008 (6 months ago)

Oh deary me! We had passed this place on many occasions and always promised we would try it. Well we should have kept going. It was a lovely sunny day and sitting outside with my lager shandy mmmm nice and refreshing. Husband and I both opted for the bowl of mussels with a tomato and basil sauce. Mouths watering at the thought. Big bowls of mussels arrived and as usual I got ready and picked and popped my 1st mussel into my mouth... Noooooo shouted dear hubby... What?! I think I must have picked the only mussel that was open, the rest already dead. Oh my, what should I do, run or walk... my mind was working overtime... Hugh went to seek the head waiter - he couldn't have been more sorry, quickly lifted the bowls and made a scarper for the kitchen. Not to be seen again... He was off!!! We did get a full refund, but boy were we lucky, and yes I was fine. I'm made of steel lol... Oh and we ended up at the Gyle, Hugh had burger and I baked potato... no comparison really is there?!?
