Golden Dragon

21 Castle St, EH2 3DN, Edinburgh

Absolutely terrible. Completely over priced. Little to no vegetables in main courses, just a weakly flavoured sauce (mostly corn flour) and some sort of meat.

Spaghetti Italian Buffet

1 Waterloo Place, EH1 3BG, Edinburgh

1 from tom reitmeier and jane costley (17%) on January 21st, 2008 (10 months ago)

Where do I start?!

The food was awful! we did not expect the food to be high quality with it being a buffet but it was not even tasty!

It was not warm, there was hardly any food in some of the trays, the pasta had no taste, the pizza was dry and was not even cooked properly, the salad bar had hardly anything, the meat and chicken was lying in oil! The sauce had no taste.

One of the workers kept mixing the food about to make it look like it had been freshly prepared.

The staff were not friendly and one of the staff took your plate away before you could even bite!, and the place itself did not have a nice atmosphere. We paid 11 pounds each and there is no way that it was worth even 4 pounds.

We know that buffets maybe never are as good quality, but this was just awful. I never complain in resturants but had to say to the staff at the end how bad it was... if you want good Italian food for good value do not go here.

We were also the only ones in the place, so maybe everyone else has tried it already and swore never to go back again.

Took 1 one hour to get delivered what we did not order. And the restaurant is 5mn walk from where I live.

Food was cold too.

Loch Fyne Restaurant

Hmmm, this was really expensive fish, with no sides and really forgetful staff. It's hard to decide which was worse really; the extraordinarily salty fish dishes or the million and one staff members all forgetting to bring you what you've ordered. I don't think there will be a next time!

Pizza Express

37 Shore, EH6 6QU, Edinburgh

1 from Janet1 (11%) on November 15th, 2007 (1 year ago)

While you come to expect the screaming children and busy nights that are the pizza express experience I have to say that last Friday night was beyond even the worst you could expect. We were shown to our table, we ordered and were then forgotten about. Our starters arrived after 20mins and they were wrong. Our pizzas arrived and mine was burnt and dry, I don't recommend "eating Roman". Add to this the obligatory wild children with parents too posh to demand some peace and tables all around us not receiving the right food and generally meek staff and I would say it was a night I suggest no one put themselves through!

Sportsters Bar and Diner

1a Market Street, EH1 1DE, Edinburgh

I did not go here through my own choice - I never would. The menu was as expected for a chain pub in Edinburgh. The service was awful. Firstly it took the waitress around 15 minutes to fetch us menus then it was a further 15-20 minutes before she took our order and then there was a further 30 minute wait for our food. The waitress took our request for sauces but then failed to appear with any, which left us scavenging for condiments from other tables. When the food did arrive it was poor quality. I had a burger which tasted a lot worse than an effort from Burger King or McDonalds. It reminded me of the tasteless, greasy burgers that my school canteen used to serve up (this was obviously before Jamie Oliver stuck his slightly smug oar into the mix). Yuk.

Following our wait for menus, orders to be taken, food and sauces the staff saved the best delay for last - we requested the bill at least 4 times but still had to wait 45 minutes for it. Then when we did get the bill we were given one for a table that was not ours - this lead to a further delay of 10 minutes. The staff were useless but I doubt they get paid enough to care.

The diners at the next table were three members of the Scotland rugby team who were set to play the All Blacks a couple of days later - I saw them tucking into plates of chips, surely these professional sportsmen should have been on pasta instead?

Cafe DeLos

National Museum of Scotland, EH1 1JF, Edinburgh

I went for a a quick bite to eat with a friend one lunch time and thought it would be nice to sit inside what Kevin Macloud once referred to as "a cross between Crystal Palace and an inside out Mississippi River Boat". How wrong I was!

Whilst the waiting staff were perfectly satisfactory in their manner, their actual serving was not. I ordered tomato soup and my friend ordered Gazpacho. Hers arrived promptly and then I was left for about three minutes waiting for mine. It's a good job her soup couldn't go cold!

When my soup finally arrived I was most disappointed. There was a chunk of fairly soft, uninspiring white roll with a knob of butter - but no knife with which to spread said butter - and a bowl of soup. Now for £4.50, or thereabouts, I would expect something with a bit of substance. Some actual tomatoes to be visible perhaps. But no, I was served lukewarm Heinz soup. When we came to pay the bill I commented that the soup had been horrendous and asked if it was home made. It was!! Where on earth did their chef train?

I was dutifully apologized to and given a comment card - which consisted of a series of questions, with the multiple choice answers ranging from 1 - poor to 5 - very good. There was a tiny three word sized space for actual comments and so I had to write up the side of the card how bad my "experience" had been.

Would I recommend this place? Perhaps if you want a can of Coke, but then they'll probably overcharge you for that too! Give this place a miss.
