I have been a few times and have actually written to complain about the slow service. I did not even get a reply , but I may now go back to find out if it has imrpoved to an acceptable level. Shame as the food was always quite good.

Went as a small group for a friends party. Unfortunately most of the rest of the place was taken by a large and very rawkus student group. Food was OK, but not particularly memorable. A couple who came in part way through the evening walked straight out. BYOB will appeal to students.

Bella Italia
9 Hanover Street, EH2 2DL, Edinburgh
from mdavidson (85%) on May 5th, 2008 (1 week ago)
Given its location this place is always going to be a bit of a tourist trap. As you might expect from a restaurant that is part of a chain (there are over 70 Bella Italias in Britain - I just checked) the feel and ambience of the place is pretty generic and you could be anywhere.
The menu is not bad but when I visited we were given a long list of things that were not available (this might be related to us turning up without a booking at 9.30 on a Sunday evening). Then when I tried to order, what I had selected was also unavailable. I ended up with duck leg in a cherry sauce. The duck was quite succulent and tasty but the sauce was too sweet for my liking. My mates had pizzas which all looked and smelled good.
At £15/head for a shared started, mains and a bottle of wine it seemed pretty good value. Overall, not bad but I probably wouldn't choose to go there again.

the food is nice enough but really overpriced and the place has no atmosphere.

This place should be better but the one main thing that lets it down is the rude staff who seems to be in no hurry to do anything. The food once you get it is actually quite good but if you ask for any condiments etc you will be lucky to receive them before you have finished your meal (or while it is still warm!)
Drinks on a Friday it's a good place to go as 2-1 on all bottles and spirits so it is always busy - but beware you won't get a seat and the staff again are in no hurry to serve anyone.
In a street full of good restaurants and bars this place should aim to be better rather than rely on anything but their service to get them through.

China Town
13 Newington Rd, EH9 1QR, Edinburgh
from Lynda McEwan (20%) on April 26th, 2008 (2 weeks ago)
This USED to be our fav Edinburgh Chinese restaurant, but since our last visit the staff have changed and the service was somewhat lacking. We had prebooked a table, and although there was a large hen party in, our booking should not have been accepted if the staff could not cope - which was obviously the case. We opted for a set meal for 5 persons and it started well. When the mains arrived with rice, the rice was not served to us, we were left to get on with it. We had to wait 10 minutes to get the bill after asking, after having finished the meal some 15 minutes previous. Even though tea, coffee is included in the set menu, we were not offered this. I had to take the bill to the bar area to pay as the staff were too busy and mentioned not being offered tea or coffee to which the lady said she would bring some free of charge to us! She obviously didn't have a clue as mentioned before it was included in the set meal price! Not a very good impression and we doubt we will return again in the future. Shame, as in previous visits the staff were attentive and friendly and the service was impeccable.

Old Orleans

I've been here a few times because you can usually use your Cineworld ticket stubs to get a meal free, however the prices mean that it's about the same price as McCowans down the street even with the discount.
It reminds me of TGI Fridays but without the cheese. The waiter was friendly but maybe too familiar? Drinks were on the over £3 side and the food was a bit dry and as nettles pointed out they offered you plenty of sauces. But that's because you need them!
Overall the food was bad, it was just a let down.

Ship on the Shore
24-26 Shore, EH6 6QN, Edinburgh
from Alicat (29%) on April 2nd, 2008 (1 month ago)
Not particularly enamoured with this restaurant. The restaurant is obviously trying to be quite laid back in its set up but has ended up just looking like a pub with too many tables. The seating is a bit crammed and it ends up getting quite noisy.
The menu is good, with a good choice of fish (although I did hear one customer complain it was too fishy... perhaps she should have thought about this when sourcing the restaurant under fish restaurant?!).
The big let down was the staff who didn't seem to have time to interact with the customers, and when I enquired about how the carrots had been cooked (very tasty!) the waitress attempted to tell me they were presumably done with butter and pepper... before deciding actually asking the person who cooked them would be the best option (tarragon was they key ingredient!).
Perhaps I'm just too fussy but with so many other restaurants delivering the whole package this one just didn't cut it for me.

I had the same issue as mdavidson previously mentioned - I am no longer a student and found that loads of stuff on the menu would have been half price if I was. Would I be better off ordering something noton the offer as it's maybe worth more if they're not willing to give it away half price?
Anyway, I was hungover, so I had the Scottish breakfast (which is on the BOGOF student offer). I was going to tell the barman that I wasn't a student and would be paying full price so wanted my plate really loaded up but my friend wouldn't let me.
It was average, and worse value than lots of other places nearby for breakfast where you get orange juice and coffee with breakfast (Frankensteins and Native State immediately come to mind).
The staff were also pretty rubbish and not very attentive. Upside of this was that when we eventually caught someone's eye and asked for the bill they had missed off the second round of drinks.
Not at all convinced by the fairly recent makeover either.

Food ok - but you have to order and pay up front at the counter. McDonalds anyone??
