Pizza Express

37 Shore, EH6 6QU, Edinburgh

2.5 from profeta77 (59%) on December 20th, 2007 (6 months ago)

Food: Pizzas - quite nice although not the best I ever had

Atmosphere: cold - the place looks like a refectory

Service: just fine - no banter though

Prices: good

Not amazing at all.

Merchants

17 Merchant Street, EH1 2QD, Edinburgh

2.5 from profeta77 (59%) on December 20th, 2007 (6 months ago)

35 of us went to the restaurant last night for a work Christmas dinner. Most of us were really disappointed.

First of all it says on the website "The innovative Scottish restaurant", look at the Christmas menu and please please tell me what is innovative? Is a Caesar salad as a Christmas starter innovative? The Angus beef was cold... if it ever was Angus beef. Haggis was covered with dull gravy.

Only main you could appreciate was the lamb shank.

And desserts were poor: you could get better chocolate tort at M&S, the Yule log was dry and the Christmas pudding cold and hard.

If you ever go there I wish you good luck.

Arowana

Unit 9, Omni Centre, EH1 3AA, Edinburgh

2.5 from PRobertson (19%) on December 15th, 2007 (6 months ago)

It was my first time visit and well, it wasn't anything special. I enjoyed my meal personally. On the other hand, my mother had ordered a main course, it took them until nearly the end of everyone's meal to inform us that her choice wasn't available, she ended up eating nothing at all. I think the staff should have checked well before they started serving everyone else.

Mosque Kitchen

50 Potterrow, EH8 9BT, Edinburgh

2.5 from Nick (12%) on December 11th, 2007 (6 months ago)

Mosque kitchen is a good place to go for curry lovers. It's not a proper restaurant, but it does have outdoor sitting place for customers. As the sitting place is outdoor, takeaway is a better idea than having your food there in the blistering cold, especially during winter as you wouldn't enjoy your food no matter how amazing the food is. The food is cheap and good for the price you pay. I always go for a plate of rice with curry chicken and spinach which costs me 3.50. The reason I rate it mediocre is the price has been increasing with growing customers. THE RIDICULOUS THING IS THEY CHARGE 50P FOR A TINY BIT OF SALAD (USED TO BE FREE)!

Bombay Bicycle Club

6 Brougham Place, EH3 9HW, Edinburgh

2.5 from Tero (19%) on December 1st, 2007 (7 months ago)

It tells something about a restaurant that it is practically empty on friday evening at 9. Food was very intermediate, you'd expect as good from a local take away anytime. Prices are not high but but in relation to quality too high. You'll receive the same much cheaper elsewhere. For example samosa had still almost frozen peas in it. Service was not bad but didn't impress either.

Khushi's

9 Victoria Street, EH1 2HE, Edinburgh

2.5 from Robin Edwards (19%) on November 28th, 2007 (7 months ago)

I'm sorry to be a dissenting voice but we visited early on a Friday night and were rather disappointed. Food was average (if that), and the staff were over-speedy to the point of brusqueness.

indigo (yard)

7 Charlotte Lane, EH2 4QZ, Edinburgh

2.5 from jcaughey (66%) on November 21st, 2007 (7 months ago)

Indigo Yard isn't really anything special. It isn't great but it isn't bad either. I love the kooky building though and the way it is laid out.

Went there for a lunch today, I had a crayfish and avocado salad with lemon crème fraiche dressing which was huge! It was nice but not very lemony. My two fellow diners both had club sandwiches, also off the lunch menu. They both cleared their plates. Club sandwich is the way forward for a lunchtime meal.

The staff were ok, but I had booked ahead and when we arrived there was someone in our table so we had to have a drink at the bar while we waited for our table. The staff were also a bit slow in terms of taking our order and bringing the bill even though there weren't many other tables in there. They were pleasant enough though just not particularly attentive!

The bill came to about £36, which included a large glass of house wine and 4 beers so not too dear.

Pub grub - nothing to get too excited about!

Anima

Ordered pizza from Anima the other night. Was a shame, it's a nice place but the pizza was greasy and tasteless. Wouldn't be my first stop.

Nargile

73 Hanover Street, EH2 1EE, Edinburgh

2.5 from mdavidson (89%) on November 12th, 2007 (7 months ago)

I dined here as part of a group of 8 and we opted for a banquet style meal. When I arrived there were already a dozen or so plates of starters on the table. I'm not sure if I missed the explanation of each of the dishes or they just didn't bother, but I didn't have a clue what anything was - I suppose I could have asked but the staff didn't seem particularly interested in us despite the restaurant not being very busy. While I like to know what I'm eating, a number of my group were vegetarians so this info was quite important to them.

The same thing happened with the main courses with a range of dishes not so delicately place on our table and very little indication of what exaclty they were - the staff had to be asked which dishes were the vegetarian ones. This also struck me as strange as it would mean that should I want to return in a smaller group I would not know what to order.

On the whole the food was reasonable (whatever it was) and there was plenty of it. The bill came to £34 each including wine - reasonable though perhaps not fantastic value.

The Three Coins Cafe

19 Home Street, EH3 9JR, Edinburgh

2.5 from zabados (13%) on November 6th, 2007 (7 months ago)

OK, not the best chips, too much vinegar and considering how much vinegar I like that's saying something.
