Not a fan of the food, where hippys go when they get old and have money.

Hard Rock Cafe

Being an Edinburgh local not sure what moment of madness made us end up here but wouldn't recommend it to anyone for food. The service is just about the only good thing going for it though. Food is over priced for what it is - £10 for a burger when you can get better for more than half the price most other places in Edinburgh.

Hamiltons Bar and Kitchen

Had been here for lunch and had a good time so decided to try it for dinner. Service was ridiculously slow (we had to wati 40 mins) for our dinner. It does say on the menu that cooking will be a while as all cooked from fresh so you are warned. Evening menu is very limited though with not much to choose from. I would recommend it for lunch if you aren't in a hurry but for dinner it doesn't have much to offer.

The Merlin

168 Morningside Road, EH10 4PU, Edinburgh

2.5 from mdavidson (89%) on November 2nd, 2007 (8 months ago)

This is a bit of a strange place. From the outside the building looks new and quite modern, however, inside it appears as though the decor has not been redone since whenever it opened (2002 apparently). Therefore, inside it looks a little bit run down and shabby. They also have a couple of fruit machines in one corner, which I feel also detracts from the ambience of pubs/bars.

After having been sat down and looking at the menus for a few minutes I decided that there must not be table service as the staff had not acknowledged our prescence. Upon ordering drinks at the bar I was informed that they do actually do table service.

I had a burger which was a tad disappointing. On the menu it was described as "8oz Aberdeen Angus Burger with a thick chutney relish", which sounds tasty. I cannot argue that the burger which arrived was not 8oz - it was pretty huge - however, its texture was too fine and it didn't really taste of anything apart from salt and, although it was there, the portion of relish was tiny and tasteless.

The Merlin also practices my current pet hate for pubs/bars - they appear to think that if they have fancy flat screen TVs dotted about the place they must use them so have Sky Sports News constantly running. Despite not being interested in watching I always find my gaze drawn to the screen.

The Kitchin

78 Commercial Quay, EH6 6LX, Edinburgh

2.5 from elizabeth (11%) on October 29th, 2007 (8 months ago)

I was disappointed when we went here in September. I'm pregnant, so my first disappointment was that there was little on the menu that I could choose from. I decided to have a salad from the starter selection as my main. However the accommodating waiter spoke to the chef rather than see me miss a course. I was offered grouse (I think £35) as my main, which apparently was "like butter". When it came I just couldn't ask for a sharper knife for my "butter"! I didn’t get the opportunity anyway, as the “accommodating waiter” surprisingly didn’t return to our table to see how his suggestion had been received. Perhaps he felt his sale had been made.

I was further disappointed that the 5 different vegetables (at least) on my plate, were all swimming in a very salty sauce – unpleasant, complicated and disappointing.

My husband loved his starter but it was so large he didn't have the appetite for his main, which was also overloaded with the salty sauce. We both wondered why there was a need to over power the food with so much salt. With a bill approaching £150 for 2 courses including wine, we couldn’t recommend The Kitchin.

Cargo

Edinburgh Quay, EH3 9QG, Edinburgh

Cargo's kitchen is wildly erratic. I've had a delicious full Scottish breakfast, and also had the worst pasta dish I've ever tasted here.

Sygn

Sygn is over-priced and full of pretentious men in suits. It is one of my least favourite bars in Edinburgh.

I ate here once but paid extortinate prices for ordinary food so, in my opinion, it is best avoided.

If you want to eat in this area I would suggest Pizza Express round the corner. Alternatively, you could always go to neighbouring Indigo Yard; also expensive but ten times better for both atmosphere and food.

The Standard

24 Howe Street, EH3 6TG, Edinburgh

2.5 from paddyhr (49%) on October 25th, 2007 (8 months ago)

Just a pub that does generic pub food, very little to mark it out against many similar establishments. No better than a Wetherspoons and not as cheap.

On the plus side you will probably get a table whatever time it is.

Pizza Express

23 North Bridge, EH1 1SB, Edinburgh

2.5 from heavyweightgeek (20%) on October 25th, 2007 (8 months ago)

Less than average quality in service and quailty of food. 25 minute wait for a coffee at the end of a meal is more than I would expect.

I was there with a large group and the general consensus was "challenging".

Cockatoo

We stopped here for a pub lunch on Saturday. It looked like it might provide a cheap and cheerful meal. Unfortunately, it wasn't very much of either.

I wasn't very hungry so ordered one of the cheapest things they had on the menu - a baked potato with tuna and sweetcorn. But they had no tuna, so I chose a quarter pounder and chips instead for the same price (£6.95). My girlfriend had a half pound "homemade" cheese burger with chips as she was starving. It was only about a pound more, and was infintely better value for money. My quarter pounder was a thin, bland piece of meat (had been frozen presumably) in a cheap burger bun whereas the half pound burger looked amazing - big and chunky, definitely homemade and in a soft ciabatta bun. Unfortunately it didn't taste great - too oniony. I don't know why they bother having the rubbish quarter pounder burgers on the menu.

Overall, the menu was far too extensive - I reckon pubs should have no more than a dozen mains on the menu - a homemade burger, sausage and mash, steak pie, fish and chips, lasagne etc. Do a few things and do them right - don't try and please everyone only to leave everyone disappointed!

Good points - the service was very efficient and friendly and they have a big car park.
