Bonsai

Bonsai use to be my favourite restaurant in Edinburgh. It's a tiny little place but it can have a great atmosphere and the food has always been really good too. My only problem is that the service seems to have gone down hill. I've been 3 times in the last year and each time I really noticed a change for the worse. Last time we were there my girlfriend and I sat at a table for more than 10 minutes without even being asked if we wanted anything to drink. I'd have understood if they were busy but 1 waiter seemed to be rushing doing everything while 2 others sat nattering. We just got up and left and I don't plan on going back. It was the first time I'd ever done that but it felt good to vote with my feet!

Really good food but strange service. Not willing to add grilled chicken to a salad - the chef couldn't do it they told me. Surely a chef can grill chicken? Not at GBK. Also paying before your meal is a strange concept. Not overly friendly. I think I'll be sticking to the burgers at Wannaburger.

I went there for the Sunday roast which is approximately £9 including a glass of wine.
Despite there was hardly anybody in the service was slow and cold. We went in a good mood but the waiter had no banter at all. Not really friendly too, just polite.
The restaurant decor is a bit cheesy and quite touristic.
The roast was not really tasty, dry and rather dull. It was accompanied with little veggies. My partner and I asked ourselves "why bothering cooking a Sunday roast to make it so dull? It is so simple to add a few herbs, or a garlic glove, or a few spices to give great taste...".
We'll never go again.

No. 1 Sushi Bar
37 Home Street, EH3 9JP, Edinburgh

Looks nice from afar, but the finish of the decor is not up to usual Japanese restaurant standard. Food is average, and the place has no Japanese staff to speak of! I think all the staff are Chinese! The menu is a copy of another Japanese restaurant in Dalry Road - Sushiya! Right down to the wording and pricing! The layout of the menu has a Chinese takeaway menu feel to it. Strange, shows where these guys background are from. The decor is a cross between Sushiya and Favorit. The miso soup was okay. The sushi was freshly made in the bar area, but the fish was not the freshest that I have had. The tempura and udon was average. Disappointed as they call themselves No.1 but I think they should let the customers vote.

Baroque

It's got a great location, great looking place but the service is shocking. Ignored for a long time after entering, we had to grab their attention to get a coffee, which was a good coffee but not worth the wait. Then barked at by the 'hoodied' waitress to see if we were going to be ordering food, not what we wanted, but just if we were. We received no more attention until we asked them if we could order food 25 mins later. Dare you ask for you bacon crispy or anything slightly that differs from the menu and you will be told that the chef doesn't like to do it that way and you will be given what you get. Who's the paying customer?

Ordered meal for takeaway, took too long to be made, waited an unusual length of time after an apparent 1945 pick up, curry was not as before, quite watery and sauce thin, rice tastless, if being busy provides this service, I may change where I go?
Looking for an improvement!

We went here for our Christmas dinner in 2006 and had a brilliant meal and time there. Oh what a difference a year makes. We walked into an empty restaurant and guess it must have changed hands as under old management you would struggle to get a table.
The limited Christmas menu was very limited with very few choices - starters (meatballs, tacos and one other option), mains (fajitas, fish, and one other option) the staff were very poor to the point where we did our own waitressing. This used to be very well priced but now seems far too expensive for what it used to be. For a 2 course meal which wasn't that good we were paying excess of £22.

Decor and ambience unimpressive. Table partly in passageway between front and rear portions of restaurant. Waiters not very professional in manner and appearance - one had an extremely wrinkled, clearly unironed shirt. Menu unimaginative. Main course very ordinary in presentation, quantity and flavour. Chips served cold and had to be returned for heating. Overpriced for what we had. As we had seen a recommendation for this restaurant we were very disappointed.

I've eaten here twice and found it mediocre both times. Had burgers and some sort of chicken dippers and to be perfectly honest I've been half way through and wondered 'why am I here'. No not some sort of existensial conundrum - why am I not in a decent boozer with good grub instead of this location.
It's not such an awful place but there must be better options locally. The Morning Glory for example although I've never eaten there. Next time I will.
Not terrible but why pay for mediocrity.
PS - the pool table is always complicated/broken.

Pay a few pounds and fill a box up with chinese buffet to take away.
Not great but ideal for those Friday afternoons you need to confirm you're alive by feeling your lunch cruising through your veins.
