Cafe Rouge

What can I say? It's a chain, playing at being French...

The one thing in its favour is an excellent rosé from Provence. Look out for the Chateau d'Aumerade!

Loch Fyne Restaurant

25 Pier Place, EH6 4LP, Edinburgh

2 from Alex (13%) on March 24th, 2008 (8 months ago)

The food was overcooked and too salty. The staff seem a little inattentive, even when the restaurant was at nowhere near capacity. The portions were inconsistent -- some were alright, but others were too small. Finally, charging separately for the vegetables pushes the price right up.

A disappointment.

Ann Purna

44-45 St Patrick Square, EH8 9ET, Edinburgh

I was extremely disappointed after having seen the good reviews above. As soon as we walked in, we noticed the disorganized and tacky decor. We were also asked for reservations even though there was nobody in the restaurant. After taking our seats, the staff was pushy to the point of rudeness. The food arrived far too quickly to have been made to order, and although decent, was nothing I couldn't have prepared in my own student kitchen. It was definitely overpriced for what it offered, and definitely will not be returning.

Montpelier's

159-161 Bruntsfield Place, EH10 4DG, Edinburgh

2 from vladimpala (16%) on March 22nd, 2008 (8 months ago)

I used to go here quite a bit - it has a nice ambiance (as long as it's not too busy) and the food was interesting and well prepared. However, in the last couple of years the standard of the food really seems to have dropped, to the extent that I have had to send a couple of dishes back back to the kitchen.

Breakfasts are normally OK - though service can be a bit slow. That said, on my most recent visit for breakfast (Feb 2008) I ordered french toast which came minus the egg - basic mistakes like that should never make it to the customer.

Bella Italia

9 Hanover Street, EH2 2DL, Edinburgh

2 from Sarah Young (12%) on March 11th, 2008 (8 months ago)

The restaurant was nice and the food was very good, but I have to say that the service wasn't good at all!

At the end of our meal we asked for the bill, it was given and as we were a group of young adults who had just taken money out of the bank to go out for a meal we only had £20 notes and one of my friends had two £10 notes so all four of us gave £20 to what was just over £60 meal and then realised we had given way too much. But we thought it would be ok and we would just get the extra money back in our change. When our change came back we had no where near the amount we should have, we complained to our waiter and we didn't get dealt with in a good manner - he was very rude. So then the manager came and said she would take our number and at the end of the night check the till and would contact us the next again day, but they never called back. I don't think I will be going there again!

Tex Mex II

64 Thistle Street, EH2 1EN, Edinburgh

2 from CA Chef (17%) on February 20th, 2008 (9 months ago)

I realize this will offend, but have any the reviewers lived or even visited Southern California, Texas or Mexico? I have been horribly disappointed by the lack of understanding of 'Tex Mex' and Mexican cuisine since arriving in Edinburgh 6 years ago (yes, I am a native Southern Californian who has spent a lot of time south of the border). I desperately wanted Tex Mex II to deliver delicious, authentic Tex Mex fair but could barely overcome my disgust at the inclusion of pink peppercorns (PINK PEPPERCORNS?!) in my Suisa Enchiladas. Unfortunately, the pink peppercorns seemed to appear everywhere for no other reason than to appease the chef's silly indulgence. Additionally, in an attempt to eat beyond the peppercorns, I still couldn't find anything representative of the cuisine I grew up eating and truly love - nothing but the heavy, stodgy 'Mexican' cuisine that seems to sadly afflict this wonderful nation. On a positive note, the staff were fantastic and I did like the casual and friendly atmosphere. More than happy to schedule some cooking lessons with the chef.

Koi

We went for a Tappanyake table last Saturday and it ended up being a nightmare.

Fair enough the place was busy and it was a nightmare but the service was really bad and they would not even apologise for it.

We had to ask three times to be served a drink, the chef on the Tappanyake was constantly arguing with the waitresses. He was making omelettes and throwings bits in the customers' mouths and breasts.

We chose Deluxe Koi with Lobster. Lobster was small as a king prawn.

We were given Smarties and Mini Mars bars for dessert!!!

And we had to keep on asking to pay the bill.

I'll never go again.

The Living Room

113-115 George Street, EH2 4JN, Edinburgh

2 from Al (17%) on February 18th, 2008 (9 months ago)

After reading some nice reviews elsewhere I thought I would be in for a treat on Valentines day with my wife.

Unfortunately I was disappointed by the staff's wish to turnaround as many tables as possible by asking us to choose our desert at the start of the meal (even when I asked if we could choose later) and then dropping off midly warm and extremely bland dishes. The price for 2, £75 excluding drinks. I've never been one to complain but with the Living Room's wish to turn a big profit and exploit what should have been a very special meal for me and my wife I've felt cheated, even robbed, and from the looks on other peoples faces, we were sure we weren't the only ones.

If you are eating at this restaurant, make sure it's not for a special occasion or a special someone.

Daniel's Bistro

88 Commercial Street, EH6 6LX, Edinburgh

2 from sboyd (36%) on February 13th, 2008 (9 months ago)

We went there recently and the food was really dire - dishes were overcooked (in one case, burnt), and the salads were very poor quality. On the plus side, we did get a refund and the staff did try to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Bonsai

46 West Richmond Street, EH8 9DZ, Edinburgh

2 from sl992l (14%) on February 12th, 2008 (9 months ago)

Bonsai use to be my favourite restaurant in Edinburgh. It's a tiny little place but it can have a great atmosphere and the food has always been really good too. My only problem is that the service seems to have gone down hill. I've been 3 times in the last year and each time I really noticed a change for the worse. Last time we were there my girlfriend and I sat at a table for more than 10 minutes without even being asked if we wanted anything to drink. I'd have understood if they were busy but 1 waiter seemed to be rushing doing everything while 2 others sat nattering. We just got up and left and I don't plan on going back. It was the first time I'd ever done that but it felt good to vote with my feet!
