Dominos Pizza

131 Dalry Road, EH11 2EA, Edinburgh

3.5 from growntree (14%) on November 20th, 2008 (2 weeks ago)

The same as any other Dominos except, being in Scotland, you can also order bottles of Irn Bru. This is the Dominos of choice if you're staying at the Roxburghe.

Delivery takes about 30 minutes and a receipt suitable for claiming expenses is stuck to the pizza box.

Bombay Spice

I've only ever had takeaway from this restaurant but the food is good, solid Indian fare. The staff are friendly and the dishes are very tasty. If you live near the Foot O' The Walk and fancy some quality spicy fare then I'd recommend giving Bombay Spice a try. :)

Nine Dragons Chinese Takeaway

Nine Dragons is a superb takeaway. Along with the standard Chinese fare they have a couple of stand-out dishes. The beef almost brought a tear to my eye: lightly battered, tender meat in a wonderfully tangy sauce. The mixed starter is highly recommended and if you like your Chinese food spicy try the Volcano Chow Mein - it's a chilli sensation!

Creelers Seafood Restaurant

3 Hunter Square, EH1 1QW, Edinburgh

3.5 from profeta77 (64%) on November 3rd, 2008 (1 month ago)

I went to Creelers with my girl-friend on Sunday for the pre-theatre menu. The choice is not really amazing and already seen in other menus such as goat cheese salad, fish cakes, pork paté and Mussels in white wine sauce as starters. For mains you could get smoked haddock on mustard mash, pan fried salmon, venison casserole and mushroom risotto.

We had the paté, the mussels then the salmon and the casserole. Nothing exciting. Food was correct. That's all.

The place itself is a bit dull - lack of decoration in the restaurant.

And the service is correct too. Price was £40 for 2 people including a beer each.

The only bad thing is the poor selections for desserts: Apple Pie, Ice Cream or Cheese plateau.

Suruchi

14a Nicholson Street, EH8 9DH, Edinburgh

3.5 from Rawlie (60%) on October 30th, 2008 (1 month ago)

Went here on a saturday night. Overall I would say the whole experience was good but nothing special considering there are some other curry places in Edinburgh which really shine (Khukuri for example). The welcome was warm and friendly however and the menu quite interesting and funny - people not familiar with Scots might not have a scoobie about what the menu is on about though but I suppose that can add to the fun!

Overall the food was good but my dish was nothing to write home about. I like mild curries as long as they aer well flavoured and don't just taste like cream. The lamb one I ordered (can't remember name again but had almonds and coconut milk/cream) verged on the slightly too creamy side which just made it taste a bit bland. My husbands dinner got better reviews than mine though - he went for a chicken dish with some nice herbs and spices and a medium/hot (sorry can't remember the name). It looked a bit gelatinous though but by all accounts tasted good. The rice was nice too - just went for the simple pilau rice, something in it made it really yummy. The naan bread was good and the popadoms and chutneys were nice and tasty too.

The staff were attentive and at one point a little too attentive as I thought the man wanted to clear our table and I hadn't finished, he got quite defensive when i said I wasn't done yet. think it was more of a misunderstanding.

Overall not bad, the decor is a bit old but you can't judge a book by its cover and all that and to be honest totally lush surroundings don't really go with curries anyway!

If you're in this area of town and fancy a curry then you may as well give it a shot but I'm afraid there are other places which stand out above it which I would go to first.

Sorry this wasn't a funny review - brain has run out of ideas today.

Buffalo Grill

1 Raeburn Place, EH4 1HU, Edinburgh

3.5 from SHESFAMILY (34%) on October 22nd, 2008 (1 month ago)

My partner and I had two full breakfasts here on Saturday 18/10/08. It was busy and we did have to wait about 15 mins for our food but it was presented nicely and the food was good. Nothing out of the ordinary eggs, bacon, tomatoes, beans, black pudding, hash browns, toast and served with a bowl of chips!

The food definitely looked liked it was cooked to order. We also had a pot of tea for 2 which we were told we could have a free refill of should we wish. Service was good, the waiter was attentive and friendly. Bill was under £16. We would visit again.

Mezbaan South Indian Restaurant

14 -14A Brougham Street, EH3 9JH, Edinburgh

3.5 from hungry (11%) on October 21st, 2008 (1 month ago)

I used to come here a lot last year but hadn't been for a while when I went in with 3 friends in Summer 08. The price increase was disappointing (can't remember the numbers but it was a good few pounds extra), as were details of the Thali changing. So, they used to bring your poppadom in advance with lovely chutneys, and this time it turned up with the rest of the meal and no chutney, you used to get your choice of main and now you don't. They used to let me ask for an alternative dessert to Gulab Jamen cause I hate it, but wouldn't this time.

I still like the food, the service is ALWAYS delightful, but it's no longer as special, or as much of a bargain. Now that Mother India is on the scene, I don't know if I'll be going back.

Green Kitchen

108 Raeburn Place, EH4 1HH, Edinburgh

3.5 from jcaughey (73%) on October 20th, 2008 (1 month ago)

I go to the Green Kitchen fairly regularly and it is actually a rather good Chinese takeaway... better yet - they are now do Japanese as well as a Chinese takeaway.

The sushi isn't cheap to takeaway but it is good and really fresh. I always opt for the sashimi salad and the California roll. I'm not sure what the rest of the menu is like because I always order the same things - need to spread my wings and explore some more types of Japanese cuisine!

The food is generally prepared very quickly and they now have a tiny wee restaurant where the sofas that used to be there to wait for collection. There are only about 3 tables and it is cold and drafty so I would use it as a takeaway rather than a restaurant.

Al Borgo

535 Lanark Road, EH14 5DE, Edinburgh

3.5 from Notquitekarpov (8%) on October 20th, 2008 (1 month ago)

Nice local independent Italian. Very friendly service and interesting wine list. Food always good sometimes excellent - homely rather than complicated and generously served. Only gripe is the noise level gets pretty high so may not be the place for a quite romantic dinner or to take your hard-of-hearing mother! We'll be back however.

Celadon

49 Causewayside, EH9 1QF, Edinburgh

3.5 from bouncingtigger13 (11%) on October 15th, 2008 (1 month ago)

I went to the Celadon early one lunchtime, and was pleasantly surprised. We had to phone the restaurant to make sure they were open, as there was no-one else in, and the sign said "Closed", even though the board advertising lunch was on the pavement. We were ushered in by the (very apologetic) front-of-house lady, waving a joss-stick. The decor was comparatively minimalistic; the tables were oriental rustic, with big balloon wineglasses on those that were already laid. The overall effect was pleasing to the eye, and conducive to a nice, quiet lunch. Whilst we were there, only one other table was occupied; but then, it was a Monday.

The food was well presented, and freshly cooked. The lunch menu is obviously a bit limited, but what do you expect for £7.99? However, the tempura prawns were lovely - and the sweet chilli dipping sauce has a good kick to it! They were nicely laid out on a china plate made to look like a banana leaf; the chilli dipping sauce was in matching crockery, designed to look like a folded banana leaf. It's these little touches that make a good restaurant. The main course was just right - I had a phad thai, which had some lovely jumbo king prawns in, alongside toasted tofu. The peanut garnish and chillies were served on the side, so you could add your own level of spiciness - mmmm. The portion control was spot on - not too much, so that you fall asleep in the afternoon, but not so little that you have to get chocolate within an hour of leaving!

A couple of Singha beers took the total to about £20 - and they contributed a third of the bill. So, good food at a reasonable price - and a bit different from the usual run-of-the-mill.
