Monteith's

61 High Street, EH1 1SR, Edinburgh

3.5 from ddcook (64%) on August 19th, 2008 (2 weeks ago)

I am mixed on Monteiths. I have eaten here twice now and I love the look and feel of the place, the selection of drinks, the friendliness of the staff and the tucked away location.

The food has also been good, on the latest occasion an excellent value and great tasting steak sandwich for Sunday lunch. The previous time I enjoyed a variety of dishes shared amongst the table, particularly good were the sausages and the black pudding mash which was fantastic!

However both times I have been in there has been something to infuriate me and sadly drops this review from 4 stars to 3...

First time the service was pretty slow and on receiving the dishes my dining partner's poached egg still had a quarter of the egg shell on it, which is just tardy on the part of the kitchen. Second time round this past weekend the service was so slow it hurt, taking about half an hour to get the (admittedly good) food to our table, then taking an equally painfully long amount of time to collect the dishes and give us the bill, at which point we found out that despite it being 2 in the afternoon on a Sunday they still hadn't cleared all the transactions through the card machine so we would have to wait 5 minutes if we wanted to pay for a meal for 5 people on plastic, very far from ideal.

So much potential in here but sadly doesn't seem to have got it quite right yet.

Bar Diesel

19 Shore Place, EH6 6SW, Edinburgh

3.5 from profeta77 (65%) on August 19th, 2008 (2 weeks ago)

Went there for lunch last month and the pub food is just like any other regular pub one: Nachos, steak sandwich, fish'n chips, burgers, etc...

Nothing special. The place was totally empty we were 4 of us, the waitress and the chef.

It was £12 for the Diesel special burger with Onion Rings and Hash Browns. Good portion,

Li Chinese Meal to Take Away

130 Colinton Rd, EH14 1BY, Edinburgh

3.5 from mistersnax (13%) on August 18th, 2008 (2 weeks ago)

Comprehensive menu. Spring rolls are a meal in itself! Normally opt for duck and black bean sauce to follow.

Tried the sweet and sour chicken (see above) - no complaints, crisp and tasty parcels, 'tho the sauce could do with a lift. Pricier than average but on the whole satisfies.

Hard Rock Cafe

20 George Street, EH2 2PF, Edinburgh

3.5 from Keekeedee (12%) on August 18th, 2008 (2 weeks ago)

The food is OK, the music is a bit crap, certainly not "Hard Rock" and the decor is lame. The cocktails however are very drinkable. All in all it is good but expensive, would go there again but not regularly.

Grand Cru

79 Hanover Street , EH2 1EE, Edinburgh

3.5 from irishphat (80%) on August 11th, 2008 (3 weeks ago)

Had Sunday Brunch here this weekend. 4 of us went in - very comfy chair it must be said. Bright and friendly service.

I'd been meaning to try food in here for a while as I pass it every day and have eaten in most of the nearby places. We ordered club sandwiches, fish and chips (£7) and shephards pie.

The club sandwiches were fine but they did themselves a bit of a diservice as the plate was far too big and made it look like they should have given more chips/salad (the greenery was particularly feeble looking).

The shephards pie was plentiful but quite salty. Didn't finish it. Overall I'd go back again and try other parts of the menu. The consensus was it was fine and no major comment was made one way or the other. Both club sandwiches and fish and chips were polished off nicely. They were also a bit stingy with ketchup (possibly a credit crunch issue).

Good daytime spot. If I'd had more time I would have gone to 99 Hanover St but we were in a bit of a rush and Grand Cru delivered.

Pink Olive

55-57 West Nicolson Street, EH8 9DB, Edinburgh

3.5 from Morrison family (18%) on August 11th, 2008 (3 weeks ago)

Enjoyed the food which was well cooked and presented by pleasant staff who made us very welcome - price was OK as well but then again I don't get out much! Would certainly go back.

Well done and look forward to my / our next visit.

Jolly's Ristorante and Pizzeria

9 Elm Row, EH7 4AA, Edinburgh

3.5 from toast (24%) on August 10th, 2008 (3 weeks ago)

This is a family favourite for filling, tasty cheap food. The service is amusing and the place always seems lively. I've never been when it has been less than 80% full. There are other nearby italians but Jolly's produces tasty food for cheaper.

The Granary

32-34 Shore, EH6 6QN, Edinburgh

3.5 from toast (24%) on August 10th, 2008 (3 weeks ago)

I went a week ago with a friend for lunch. We sat in the window. She ordered the haggis, neeps and tatties from the starters and I had the aubergine cous cous. The HNT came stylishly served in a tower and looked a small portion but my friend couldn't finish it and we decided the tower was deceptive. My cous cous came without its almonds and it needed either more veg or some more seasonings as it was just ok. I liked the service as they were attentive but left us in peace otherwise.

Previously when I've been I've had brunch with large portions of tasty food so reckon this place is generally good.

Suruchi Too

121 Constitution Street, EH6 7AE, Edinburgh

3.5 from toast (24%) on August 10th, 2008 (3 weeks ago)

We recieved a menu through the door which was a 'spend £20 get free beer offer' - so we tried them and it was very good. The curries had lots of meat and vegetables in them, not just sauce. The side orders were good too. To top it all the beer was cold too.
