Fenwick's
15 Salisbury Place, EH9 1SL, Edinburgh
from irishphat (80%) on August 17th, 2007 (1 year ago)
Again - I seem to have a habit of turning up to places that are either dead or chaotic - this was the former on a Friday night. Food was good and staff had good banter. Does a good trade with the older local residents piling in most of the week and its Sunday trade is more than steady. Slightly out of the way but a bit of a gem. Can't recall the food but remember it being good value. Like it.

Buffet King

I love this place. This was a coffee shop way back in the day that was owned by a pal of JK rowling and she used to sit up in there writing the book and minding her nipper. Food's ok and it's comfy. Good for a pre-cinema nosh.
The starters are always good and if you go after 6 pm you can get the crispy duck pancakes. The mains are as you would expect (actually I kind of fancy one now) and as usual you can help yourself as much as you like. Desserts can be a bit ropey but the icecream is tasty and plentiful. Tends to get a bit of studenty crowd and is not as busy as Jimmy Chungs.

The Waiting Room
7 Belhaven Terrace, EH10 5HZ, Edinburgh
from maggot (27%) on August 15th, 2007 (1 year ago)
Good for a pub meal. More choice than your average microwaved steak and chips. There are mexican nights and 2 for 1 on various cocktails, beers, wines etc during the week. Excellent for breakfasts and brunch.

Clay Oven
86-88 Morningside Road, EH10 4BY, Edinburgh
from maggot (27%) on August 15th, 2007 (1 year ago)
Group of 10 of us went there July 07. They were extremely patient with us considering one of our group was over an hour late but kept us stocked with popadoms and Cobra beers. Mains better than average and we even had desserts.

GY Chinese Takeout
27 Roseneath Place, EH9 1JD, Edinburgh

The best Chinese takeaway in Marchmont, not that there's a huge selection. No frills friendly, quick service and decent food. All you need from a Chinese takeaway, really.

Khukuri
8 West Maitland Street, EH12 5DS, Edinburgh
from nettles (96%) on August 9th, 2007 (1 year ago)
A friend and I went to The Khukuri the other night expecting some interesting and new (to us) Nepalese food. Instead we ate some really good Indian. I understand that Nepalese cuisine is quite similar to Indian but it also should have hints of northern Chinese cooking and other countries of that region. Unfortunately, I could not find any indication of these on the menu or when I spoke with our waiter who when asked if he had any recomendations could not formulate any sort of opinion. Usually this is a bad sign.
But we trucked on. We shared a starter of Dolakha raja jhinga which is described on the menu as "king prawn cooked with fresh garlic, lemon, methi, tomato, and dhania and served with a small chapati". This was excellent. All the flavours coming through, but what is methi? I dont know, but it was delicious. For out mains we had Namche bhenda, a lamb dish and sag paneer, the ubiquitous indian spinach and cheese dish. The lamb was tender and flavourful in a wonderful sauce, just enough spice. The sag was a bit disappointing, the paneer pieces were not as tangy and tender as they should have been. We also had naan bread and rice, both up to par.
If we do visit again we will be sure to have our before dinner drinks there as they were really cheap! Lessons learned. A good place for a curry or curryish meal and since the place was completely booked out after 730 I think there is a chance I missed out on something.

King's Balti
79 Buccleuch Street, EH8 9LS, Edinburgh
from mdavidson (93%) on August 7th, 2007 (1 year ago)
Good value and good food. On my most recent visit to King's Balti I was part of a group of 20. We all opted for the "party menu" which was great value and filled everyone up (they brought out massive platters of pakoras, samosas and bhajis for starters) for a very reasonable £14 (or thereabouts) per head.

The Witchery by the Castle
352 Castlehill, EH1 2NF, Edinburgh
from maggot (27%) on August 6th, 2007 (1 year ago)
I have to say there was noone famous there when we went but some man did get down on one knee and propose to his girlfriend and the waiting staff all clapped and cheered...as did we...like something out of an american rom/com. It's that kind of restaurant. Decor is like it is from the film set of Narnia, excellent food especially the butter and bread varieties you get whilst waiting for your starters. We didn't order the £1000 bottle of wine off the menu but instead the cheapest on the menu at £24. For a fancy night out that you'll pay the price for I'd recommend but for the one off occasion.

Viva Mexico
41 Cockburn Street, EH1 1BS, Edinburgh
from maggot (27%) on August 6th, 2007 (1 year ago)
Simple but effective filling mexican food. Reasonably priced. 8 of us had starters and mains, two large pitchers of sangria, a small pitcher of Margarita and coffees and the bill was split 8 ways at just £21.50 each. I've eaten here before and there are tables upstairs off Cockburn street but a bit drafty and cramped. We got a table down stairs this time which I'd ask for if going again.

The Lee On
3-5 Bruntsfield Place, EH10 4HN, Edinburgh
from Meng (91%) on August 5th, 2007 (1 year ago)
I used to live across from the Lee On, where my flatmates swore by this restaurant as a takeaway, particularly their beef satay sauce.
I can tell you their satay sauce was watery peanut crap. In fact, a lot of what passes as 'satay' is just watery peanut crap. You want satay? Go to an Indonesian/Malaysian restaurant. Chinese 'satay' sauce is as authentic as 'Japanese curry', or British 'tikka masala'. Oh wait...
But I jest, the takeaway, was pretty good. And I'm Chinese. From Malaysia. By way of Britain.
The food? Well it turns out just a few months ago i actually went down to their basement restaurant area and actually ended up eating there based on a friend's recommendation (whose family eat there loads. And her family's Italian). Guess what? 4 years is a long time, and the food is actually better than the takeaway stuff. No-prizes all around.
(Bet you the satay's still crap though)
Here's a tip. Look inside a Chinese restaurant. Do you see Chinese people eating there (as opposed to only serving, cooking, running the registers)? if the answer is yes, you can be sure it's at LEAST 3 and a half stars out of 5. You can use this formula for any 'ethnic' restaurant really. Indian restaurants, Japanese restaurants, etc. The more 'locals' you see, the more 'authentic' it would be.
Go in to the Lee Onn, look across and say 'I'll have what he's having'. Can't go wrong with this reliable stalwart of Tollcross Chinese cuisine. Unless of course it's the chicken feet dim sum. In satay sauce.
