The Witchery by the Castle

352 Castlehill, EH1 2NF, Edinburgh

3.5 from maggot (26%) on August 6th, 2007 (1 year ago)

I have to say there was noone famous there when we went but some man did get down on one knee and propose to his girlfriend and the waiting staff all clapped and cheered...as did we...like something out of an american rom/com. It's that kind of restaurant. Decor is like it is from the film set of Narnia, excellent food especially the butter and bread varieties you get whilst waiting for your starters. We didn't order the £1000 bottle of wine off the menu but instead the cheapest on the menu at £24. For a fancy night out that you'll pay the price for I'd recommend but for the one off occasion.

Viva Mexico

41 Cockburn Street, EH1 1BS, Edinburgh

3.5 from maggot (26%) on August 6th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Simple but effective filling mexican food. Reasonably priced. 8 of us had starters and mains, two large pitchers of sangria, a small pitcher of Margarita and coffees and the bill was split 8 ways at just £21.50 each. I've eaten here before and there are tables upstairs off Cockburn street but a bit drafty and cramped. We got a table down stairs this time which I'd ask for if going again.

The Lee On

3-5 Bruntsfield Place, EH10 4HN, Edinburgh

3.5 from Meng (87%) on August 5th, 2007 (1 year ago)

I used to live across from the Lee On, where my flatmates swore by this restaurant as a takeaway, particularly their beef satay sauce.

I can tell you their satay sauce was watery peanut crap. In fact, a lot of what passes as 'satay' is just watery peanut crap. You want satay? Go to an Indonesian/Malaysian restaurant. Chinese 'satay' sauce is as authentic as 'Japanese curry', or British 'tikka masala'. Oh wait...

But I jest, the takeaway, was pretty good. And I'm Chinese. From Malaysia. By way of Britain.

The food? Well it turns out just a few months ago i actually went down to their basement restaurant area and actually ended up eating there based on a friend's recommendation (whose family eat there loads. And her family's Italian). Guess what? 4 years is a long time, and the food is actually better than the takeaway stuff. No-prizes all around.

(Bet you the satay's still crap though)

Here's a tip. Look inside a Chinese restaurant. Do you see Chinese people eating there (as opposed to only serving, cooking, running the registers)? if the answer is yes, you can be sure it's at LEAST 3 and a half stars out of 5. You can use this formula for any 'ethnic' restaurant really. Indian restaurants, Japanese restaurants, etc. The more 'locals' you see, the more 'authentic' it would be.

Go in to the Lee Onn, look across and say 'I'll have what he's having'. Can't go wrong with this reliable stalwart of Tollcross Chinese cuisine. Unless of course it's the chicken feet dim sum. In satay sauce.

Sushiya

19 Dalry Road, EH11 2BQ, Edinburgh

3.5 from nettles (94%) on August 3rd, 2007 (1 year ago)

My husband and I had dinner at Sushiya to celebrate an anniversary. I was missing the sushi from back home (NY) so much that it had become necessity to get some. Sushiya is very small, only a few tables and when we arrived there were only two tables empty and both had little reserved cards on them. The waitress came up to us, looked at her watch and said that if we could eat in less than an hour and a half we could have a table. Perfect. The restaurant is small, clean, and simple. On the wall is a little flat screen tv showing wacky japanese tv food programs that are so popular over there.

The menu is not particularly extensive with only 2 selections of the larger mixed rolls. One dragon and one rainbow. I wished they had more of these as these are some of my favourite choices when having sushi. We ordered some sake (we were celebrating you know) and shared a nigiri set, an order of eel, and went for the dragon roll as recommended by our waitress. We actually had more things on order but the chef must have said there was no way two people could eat that much and we took some stuff off. It was a good thing because there was no way we would have been able to get anything else down!

The miso soup that came with the set was nothing special. The eel was very good, no little bones which can be dissapointing and not overpowering. The nigiri set was ok. Fish to rice ratio was good. The fish was fresh, there is no doubt and all was neat and tidy as it should be. The dragon roll was presented well, shrimp tempura with cucumber in an inside out roll draped with avacado which could have been riper, with small dollops of slightly sweet japanese mayonaisse and flying fish roe. It was very nice, the shrimp had cooled a bit and would have been even tastier if it was given to us when the shrimp was still hot to contrast with some of the colder ingredients.

If you are craving sushi sushiya will sate your appetite but if you are looking for outrageous stuff I hope you know where to get it!

The Ping On Chinese Restaurant

26 Deanhaugh St, EH4 1LY, Edinburgh

3.5 from andy (100%) on August 1st, 2007 (1 year ago)

7 of us ordered delivery to the Old Town from them on Saturday night. They didn't mention how long it would take to deliver. After an hour we rang back to ask where it was. They were very apologetic and said it was on its way. When it finally arrived (after about 1 hour, 15 minutes), the guy only charged us £20 as it was so late. It should have been about £50. The food was still hot, so we were pretty chuffed.

Why don't more takeaways treat their customers like that? We probably wouldn't have used them again if we'd had to pay full price, but now almost certainly will.

Food was pretty standard Chinese takeaway fair. Better than average. Good work Ping On!

Chilli Connection

47 South Clerk Street, EH8 9NZ, Edinburgh

Wonderful food, quick service and all at the standard takeaway price. For decent Indian Takeaway you could do a lot worse! Very much recommended.

Maison Bleue

36-38 Victoria Street, EH1 2JW, Edinburgh

3.5 from anuschka (10%) on July 19th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Really tasty and well presented (if slightly pricey) food! Good atmosphere! Waitresses could maybe wait with cleaning the tables with spray and cloth right next to you - at least until you've finished eating...even if you are the last guest to leave the restaurant.

Oddfellows

14 Forrest Road, EH1 2QN, Edinburgh

3.5 from jwjlewis (76%) on July 19th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Very reasonably priced. Nothing special, but for an after work drink and snack, it is perfectly adequate. Don't go out of your way, but likewise, don't avoid it.

The 3 Sisters

139 Cowgate, EH1 1JS, Edinburgh

3.5 from jwjlewis (76%) on July 19th, 2007 (1 year ago)

The rating I have given this place is someone erroneous - for a stag do, or if you're a first year student, it is great. However if you are just a little bit older and prefer somewhere that doesn't always smell of vomit, then I would go elsewhere.

Chips, cheese and mayonnaise at midnight, whilst drunk - could you ask for more?
