Ah, the Chippie of my childhood. There's nothing better than a poke of chips with your chums when you're starving hungry and juggling the heat of the chips with the slippiness of the brown sauce. Good times...

Juiced Up

Just had one of their smoothies this morning - and it was very tasty - but £3 for a medium seems like a lot to pay for smoothie. Service was a bit slow and the staff could have smiled a bit more.

Peckhams Underground
155-159 Bruntsfield Place, EH10 4DG, Edinburgh
from vladimpala (16%) on March 22nd, 2008 (3 months ago)
I've had mixed experiences of Peckhams Underground but I still go back - so it can't be that bad.
On the plus side the food is usually good and the menu is little more interesting than you average gastro pub. If you don't like the choices on the wine list you can pop upstairs and buy something from the deli and pay corkage.
On the minus side. The menu hasn't changed for a couple of years now and could do with a referesh to keep the locals interested. Also, service can be a bit slow at times - even when the place isn't busy.

Bisque Brasserie

I've eaten here a couple of time in the last year and have been quite impressed with the food. The decor is nothing special (a fairly bland modern look) and the location in the basement of the hotel doesn't really encourage you to expect anything other than average gastro-pub type grub.
But the food is actually quite good, the service is efficient and friendly and they was no problem fulfilling the rather odd requests from some of my party. We all left happy and full and nobody had any complaints.

Hanam's

Nice little local restaurant with friendly atmosphere and service.
We had a selection of mixed starters for 2 for £12 and a main to share for £9.
Both the starters and main, a tashreeb were tasty and quite filling.
We brought our own bottle of wine and we did not had to pay a fee. BYOB is free!
Tastier and healthier alternative than a burger, kebab or fish and chips take away!
A must go!

Booked a party of 8 for pre theatre dinner on a Wednesday night.
Service was very quick and welcoming.
Food was very good and great value. Mushroom Ravioli and Mussels in particular were big hits. Because it was a pre theatre dinner time was short but service was very rapid. Drinks a bit more expensive but a good experience. Will be back.

Stockbridge Restaurant
54 St Stephen Street, EH3 5AL, Edinburgh
from jcaughey (66%) on March 10th, 2008 (3 months ago)
I went to The Stockbridge restaurant with a group of friends on Friday night.
The food was absolutely fantastic. I thought everything was going to be very expensive but they had a set menu available – 3 courses for £22 (or something very similar) which I opted for. The a la carte menu is quite a bit more expensive.
We were given a scrummy canapé to start with which was beautifully presented, I then had a rabbit carbonara followed by beefcake – this was served with a gorgeous warm feta and beetroot salad (this was actually my favourite part of the meal). Before pudding we were given a fantastic passion fruit sorbet and then I had a pear and nut crumble. The food really was sumptuous!
My only negative was the service and to some extent the atmosphere. The atmosphere was pretty rigid, if you can describe an atmosphere as that… and I don’t think a restaurant should ever be like that! When we first arrived, there was only a table for 2 in and we were seated at the table next to them, the music was barely audiable so they could hear our converstaion and us vice versa. Anyway, the big downer on the night was at the end of the evening – our bill for 5 people – 4x bottles of wine, 5x 3 courses – was £185, which was suprisingly reasonable! However, we paid this before we had finished the wine and we had about ½ bottle left on the table and the waiter asked us if he could get us our coats which we felt was VERY rude. It was only 10:30 and the restaurant was still pretty full so the polite thing to do would have been to leave us to finish our wine. We were all pretty taken aback by this.
If the service had been as good as the food this would have been an easy 5*s. Still worth checking out and I would recommend that you book!

New China Kitchen
22 Rodney St, EH7 4EA, Edinburgh
from mdavidson (89%) on March 7th, 2008 (4 months ago)

We ordered takeaway here hoping to have it delivered. However, on the night that we called the had no driver. Instead of trying to call somewhere else, we decided to stop being so blooming lazy (the restaurant was less than 5mins walk away) and went to pick up the food, which was ready within 15 minutes.
We ordered half a duck and some shredded chicken in chilli sauce. The duck was nice and crispy and it seemed more like we had been given a whole duck - there was too much for the number of pancakes we were given. The chicken was pretty tasty too.

Amicus Apple
17 Frederick Street, EH2 2EY, Edinburgh
from irishphat (76%) on March 1st, 2008 (4 months ago)
This is across the road from Millets where the Frederick st bar used to be. Also it's below Boudiche for those of you who fancy some lingerie shopping. Mobbed in the evenings - unless you want to eat dinner in a drunken bar - it's only good for lunch.
Popped in here twice recently for lunch as the filling station was mobbed (! - I like their pizza). So far I've had the burger, sausage and mash and sampled a pal's steak sandwich. Always been around £20 for grub/beer. Always been tasty and enjoyable lunch fare. Hard to go wrong really.
Bad bits: Lack of atmos - guaranteed seats I suppose.
It's right around the corner from my work so I'll definitely be going again - no complaints. Safe enough for what it is.
Also it's pretty prompt. I've never been late back to work after eating there.

Cafe Royal Bistro

Had Friday evening Dinner here about 3 weeks ago. It was empty. However it did fill up a bit before we left and I'm told it's inadvisable to show up on spec on a weekend normally.
Always wanted to try this place. Lovely setting mind you. it's a great room. Very french, very old fashioned, service was good but then they weren't very busy so it should be.
We had onion soup and I had a prawn starter. The former was better. Then I had a chicken dish with mash and it was really very nice while herself had a pasta dish which to be fair was tasty.
We tucked into a shared dessert and headed for the hills with a fairly happy wallet. It wasn't outrageous - I think we paid around £48 but we were on the beer as well.
Due to its location I would go again if I found myself on that side of the bridge looking for that kind of food (old fashioned, simple, filling).
Overall, liked it enough to recommend it. The mains were the best bit and worth every penny.
