Shezan Tandoori

25 Union Place, EH1 3NQ, Edinburgh

3 from Bryan (61%) on September 5th, 2008 (1 day ago)

I have to confess I was a little drunk as I staggered in here last night at around 7:30 for a pre-arranged curry with some pals. I'd spent the previous 4 hours in Mezz at the foot of Broughton Street (fortunately Mezz does not appear on EdinburghMenus.com so my sarcastic comments about the state of their minging cocktails will remain unsaid).

Back at the completely empty curry house, I drank some Cobra and then some more. The poppadoms arrived but with only two dips (the chilli tomato one and the yoghurty one) The normal ones like lime pickle, mango chutney, and onion arrived bizarrely with the starters. I had a chicken tandoori which became chicken tandoori with lime pickle. Don't laugh, it worked!

Then I had lamb biryani which was OK - the lamb and rice was nice but the sauce was fraudulent - looked like it had fallen out of a jar and been introduced to some chillies. Completely vast course, really shouldn't have had a starter as well but I'd had diminished responsibility when I ordered so...

Can't really get over the fact that this biryani, essentially a mountain of rice with some meat in it cost £13 where it would cost 40p in India and be much nicer.

No idea what the bill was as I left early feeling nauseatingly full, I guessed £30 and made my excuses.

Waiting staff were better than usual (I have previously been served by someone chewing gum), they were friendly and smiley and accommodating.

Good enough curry, there are better places but it was OK.

Pretty disappointed. I'm a regular customer and I had my chips throwm onto my pizza tonight (not even a full portion).

Koi

30 Potterrow, EH8 9BT, Edinburgh

3 from naomi (48%) on August 27th, 2008 (1 week ago)

We visited Koi on a Saturday for late lunch but missed out on the set meal deal for lunch 12-2pm - looked like really good value. This site has been a number of restaurants over the years, none of which have seemed to last that long. Koi suits the space - fresh and modern, very clean decor/setting. It was not that busy when we went but there was a group around the Teppanyaki table and that looked like great fun! We decided to order a mixture of dishes: veg tempura, salmon tempura, california rolls (sushi) and Yakitori (chicken skewers in terriyaki sauce) and a 2 drinks (total approx £31). The tempura was a little disappointing as it was quite greasy but the rest of our order was very tasty. The sushi tasted great but did not look as good as that from Sushiya in Dalry Road. Chicken was nice and succulent, not dry. Very filling and to be honest, 3 dishes between the 2 of us would have been enough. I would imagine it's very good at the weekend in the evening and if you can get a group then go for the Teppanyaki. Good service, great location nr Edin Uni shame about the batter (hence the lower rating). I would go back though!

Hmm...went back on Sat (Aug 2008) and was not very impressed. We got the meal deal this time so maybe can't complain and our service was okay but then again it was pretty much empty. Diners beside us seemed to not be having a good experience, their food was late and they did not seem to be enjoying it much. Tables and glasses were not that clean and the food was overly salty. I guess for £7.50 each for the Tappanyake meal you can't complain and the salmon was nice enough.

Le Monde

16 George Street, EH2 2PF, Edinburgh

3 from jcaughey (67%) on August 26th, 2008 (1 week ago)

A group of friends and I went to le Monde on Saturday lunch time - we were at that end of town and one of my friends had just got engaged so we decided to go for lunch and some champagne cocktails.

We hadn't booked and were shown to a booth upstairs. We had a very attentive waited to recommended a delicious champagne cocktail (I think it was called le Cruyff - might be wrong!) which was delicious - one of my friends was on antibiotics though and so was off booze - no problem - they mixed her an alcohol free version which was very good as well!

For lunch I opted for scallops which I was warned were a small portion - it was! Good job I got the side salad otherwise I would have been stealing food off my friends! Two of them opted for macaroni cheese that looked and smelt fabulous, whilst my third friend had a humous sandwich.

Service was very good though out - judging from the other reviews, we were lucky! It was very busy but we didn't have to wait overly long for food or drinks!

For 4 meals and two rounds of cocktails it came to about £65 which I think was reasonable. I wouldn't rush back as I'm sure you could get better for the same price. If you are keen to try similar sort of food in this area of town - try Amicus Apple or Ricks. Amicus do great cocktails and it'll cost a similar price.

Negociants

45-47 Lothian Street, EH1 1HB, Edinburgh

3 from mdavidson (90%) on August 26th, 2008 (1 week ago)

As jwjlewis states, the fact that Negociants stays late is a real bonus. I think it is probably one of the few pubs/bars/cafes in Edinburgh where you can sit down and order food way past 10pm. I recently had a "Full Scottish Breakfast" there one morning. This consisted of bacon (x2), sausages (x2), hash brown, mushrooms, fried egg, black pudding, tomato and haggis. The standard was decent enough although the bacon did not look freshly cooked and was a bit dry.

Tippoo Sahib

129a Rose Street, EH2 3DT, Edinburgh

3 from Rosie (13%) on August 21st, 2008 (2 weeks ago)

Our meal was reasonable value for money but treat the early evening two for one offer with caution. It says "conditions apply". You have to go downstairs to find out what the conditions are, by which time it's difficult to make a getaway. The conditions are that you have to buy two very uninspiring starters for £3.00 each + rice and naan, so end up paying nearly as much as you would have done for two main courses. You are constantly hassled about whether you want poppadoms or more drinks. There are much better deals around in Edinburgh for early evening eating.

Abstract

33-35 Castle Terrace, EH1 2EL, Edinburgh

3 from steve (9%) on August 19th, 2008 (2 weeks ago)

The food was very good, the wine pleasant (even the house red) and the service was good except... somewhere along the line on a moderately busy Saturday night they managed to forget our main courses! It took a reminder from us for them to realise this and after a gap of around an hour they were eventually served. The waiting staff were very good and the the price of the main courses wiped from the bill but as it was supposed to be a special occasion the night was a little spoilt.

Zizzi

Unit 5 Building 4A, Edinburgh Quays, EH3 9RU, Edinburgh

3 from profeta77 (65%) on August 19th, 2008 (2 weeks ago)

One word: DULL

The food is correct. Not delightful.

Staff is correct, not really friendly but ok.

The place is clean but too much like a chain restaurant.

Prices are ok: Average £8 for a main. £4 for a starter. £15 for a bottle of wine.

I will not go there again.

The Waterline

The Shore, EH6 6RD, Edinburgh

3 from toast (24%) on August 17th, 2008 (2 weeks ago)

The barman helped carry drinks outside without being asked which was really helpful. The menu was varied and average prices. I ordered fish and chips which had light tasty batter and fresh fish.

However our group (8 people) ordered in 2 lots. One group were given their meals at least 10 mins ahead of the rest which wasn't great especially as we'd ordered together AND 4 of the later dishes were salad!?!?

I was glad I hadn't picked a salad as some of my side salad was mucky as in not been near water. I should have said something but didn't.

I've eaten here several times and would go again hence the 3 stars. I think the negatives were just blips.

Mamma's American Pizza Co

28-30 Grassmarket, EH1 2JU, Edinburgh

3 from irishphat (80%) on August 11th, 2008 (3 weeks ago)

Went in here at the weekend with 3 friends for an early dinner. Tried some starters and 3 different pizzas.

The place was very busy and clearly well staffed so we were never waiting long. The starters were pretty average to be honest. Presentation was poor and the food itself was fine but nothing special. Certainly no better than what I can manage at home. We also had some bbq chicken wings which were quite basic.

For pizzas they do one good bit of service which is half in half pizzas with any amount of choice without penalising prices. No complaints on price at all. Pizza's themselves were all unfinished - we were hungry mind you.

We skipped dessert.

All in all decent value for money and we were fed but I've no intention of going back. I'd probablty try somewhere new instead. Having said that I'd not say you should avoid it - just that I wasn't very wowed by it.

Friendly people though and it was swift so if you need a quick bite it could be the one for you.
