Smoke Stack

53-55 Broughton Street, EH1 3RJ, Edinburgh

This place has the potential to be good but I have been disappointed several times here with risottos being undercooked and other dishes being too rich. It can be quite hit or miss depending on the menu you get.

The Living Room

I was here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. It was really busy, but the waitress managed to sit 4 of us quite quickly and was very helpful.

The food was okay - I had a chicken caesar salad which was a bit small considering the price (about £9) but was fine. My friends had soup, a sandwich and a burger, all of which were nice, but not great.

Good atmosphere, but really warm in the dining area.

Banter

85-87 Fountainbridge, EH3 9PU, Edinburgh

3 from mdavidson (91%) on October 30th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Largely as a result of my drinking companions, the banter on my visit here was superb until, after 6 or so hours, it descended into an alcohol fuelled haze, which included us drinking the pub out of IPA.

To eat I had squewers of beef with pita bread and rice. It was pretty tasty, but that was largely down to it being smothered in bought in (I am almost certain of this) sweet chilli dipping sauce. I experienced an extreme episode of food envy as one of my friends ordered a starter portion of haggis, neaps and tatties for the modest sum of £4.75 - the portion that did arrive would have passed as a main course in many establishments. The IPA battered fish also look pretty tasty.

All in, not a bad place to spend an evening with mates, although I reckon Cloisters nearby has a better atmosphere and a better selection of ales.

Ryan's Bar

2-4 Hope Street, EH2 4DB, Edinburgh

Decent food, fast service. Perhaps the best feature is the location - it's impossible to miss even for people who tend to get a bit lost.

I previously reviewed this fairly new bar on George Street giving it 3.5 stars as I was really impressed the first time I went with the prices, quality of food and ambiance of the place. But having been back a couple of times, I have to knock it down at least half a star. The last time I was there the service was really slow and the food was only average.

They seem to be getting a bit lazy with the overall appearance of the place as well. We were sitting at the back of the bar and there was a cheap and nasty baby's high chair at the bar alongside the other bar stools. Things like that say bad management to me.

I'd still recommend that you try this place, but don't be surprised if it's not as good as you thought it was going to be when you first step in the door.

The Outsider

15 George IV Bridge, EH1 1EE, Edinburgh

3 from foodie (29%) on October 28th, 2007 (1 year ago)

The food is good and fresh, though you have to be mindful of portions (most of the dishes are intentionally small). Service (each and every time I have been here) is really terrible.

Black Bo's

57-61 Blackfriars Street, EH1 1NB, Edinburgh

3 from foodie (29%) on October 28th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Food is fine but far from memorable. For only a few extra quid, you are better off going to David Bann's and having a truly delicious and memorable vegetarian meal.

Vittoria

High standard of food was let down by very ordinary service, think we had the work experience kid (although he was about 30). By the standard of the service other diners were getting I think we were unlucky.

Good pizza in a nice setting in the old town, I would go back.

Double Dutch

27-29 Marshall Street, EH8 9BJ, Edinburgh

3 from Rich (40%) on October 22nd, 2007 (1 year ago)

Not a bad palce to eat. A fresh atmosphere with attentive staff. Never too busy. I have been for breakfast a couple of times on the back of the previous reviews. In all honesty I found the food reasonable but nothing special and perhaps a little over priced.

Monboddo

Point Hotel, EH3 9AF, Edinburgh

3 from Rich (40%) on October 22nd, 2007 (1 year ago)

This place does pub food reasonably well nothing inspiring but edible! There is a strange clash of styles with burgers and fish and chips being served on Nouveau Cuisine crockery with each chip arranged geometrically. The service is fine and the surroundings clean and crisp.

Nothing spectacular but a step up from your usual pub grub at a similar price.
