Frankenstein

26 George IV Bridge, EH1 1EN, Edinburgh

Disagree completely. Eaten here during footie many times and while it's not entirely as cheap as you feel it should be it's not that bad. I've had several of the courses in here and the big yorkshire pudding, chili burger, nachos and other safe stuff have all been fine. I've even had good fish and chips in here.

Service is normally fine as well. Not fabulous, but certainly as good as the Golf for a footie meal. No free pies at half time.

The Three Coins Cafe

19 Home Street, EH3 9JR, Edinburgh

3 from mdavidson (90%) on October 10th, 2007 (10 months ago)

I have experienced many unmemorable meals from the 3 coins. This is not a result of bland food but due to the establishment having a 3am licence and my rather advanced stage of inebriation upon ordering. My days of visiting kebab houses at 3am are pretty much at an end but in my student days I was a regular customer of the 3 coins, such that the proprietor would occasionally take my orders through the window from the back of the queue – not cool.

I did visit more recently at a more reasonable hour and in state of sobriety and I was pleasantly surprised. The service was friendly, the chicken shish was tasty and the garlic mayo was, as I vaguely remembered, very good indeed.

Hudsons Bar

The Hudson Hotel, EH2 4EL, Edinburgh

Hudson's is a hotel, bar, restaurant AND a club.

The bar charges expensive George Street prices but fails to reach the same standard as competition such as Tigerlily and the Living Room.

It attracts a mixed crowd on a weekend - some suits but also the hairdresser and stag party crowd too... Not so great.

Food is mediocre and pretty basic (I wouldn't visit here for the food alone). The dessert menu is poor. Despite the food being basic it is tasty (if a little over-priced). The staff, on the other hand, are extremely friendly and very attentive.

The club is dingy and usually quiet - not worth a visit really. However, I would consider hiring the club out for a private function or party because they offer great deals and it is the perfect size - ideal for a birthday party or work event.

I think there are about 30 hotel rooms in total - they are very modern and all vary in size costing approximately £100 per room per night. Receptionists are always happy to help with any problems you may have.

Overall: decor and staff are great. However, it is quite expensive and food is pretty basic. I think Hudson's would do a lot better if it tried to be more unique and stopped trying to compete with the likes of Tigerlily.

All Bar One

29 George Street, EH2 2PA, Edinburgh

3 from craigw (14%) on September 15th, 2007 (11 months ago)

Good selection of wines and beers but the central location makes this a very popular pub and as a result it can be hard to get a seat or get served quickly. Check the small rooms to the side of the door as you enter - good for a bit of privacy if you're in a small party.

I-Ching Chinese Restaurant

83 Slateford Rd, EH11 1QR, Edinburgh

3 from nettles (95%) on September 3rd, 2007 (1 year ago)

Typical British Chinese fare. Neither good nor bad only what is expected. Had their meal deal in the restaurant, soup, prawn crackers, and we shared beef with peppers and black bean sauce and a stir fried chicken dish. I don't recall what the sauce was as it was one of those bland light brown ones that seem ubiquitous in all Chinese restaurants in Edinburgh.

The decor was a tad kooky, I could have actually been happier with some more kookiness. They have hung on the wall a flat screen TV that shows the insides of a fish tank. Also had a water fountain inside which was peculiarly covered in plastic wrap. I am assuming that this is not always the case, but who knows.

Banana fritters for dessert. Mediocre, but at least they were fresh from the fryer not the gummy stuff you would get at a buffet or takeaway.

Frankie and Benny's

Unit 3, Omni Centre, EH1 3AA, Edinburgh

3 from irishphat (80%) on August 31st, 2007 (1 year ago)

Grand enough food, nice cocktails. It's very slow in here mind you and it's not always understandable as to why this is so. I'll more than likely go again. The service is decent and value is ok. I like the burgers and the setting is kinda engaging. If you're early for a movie it's not a bad bet. Especially if you don't want to go for tapas.

Bella Italia

54-56 North Bridge, EH1 1QN, Edinburgh

3 from irishphat (80%) on August 31st, 2007 (1 year ago)

Been here 3 or 4 times. The pizza's are best and always enjoyable.

My sister has brought her kids there a couple of times and they had a grand time too - no trouble at all.

I did bring a pal here once who was visiting nad his lasagne was cold in the middle - unimpressed.

Usually it's pretty good and it's a great location probably acounts for it's usual crowds inside.I think I'll end up in here again but probably only if pizza express can't take us.

Service is good by the way - lovely staff.

Montpelier's

159-161 Bruntsfield Place, EH10 4DG, Edinburgh

The food is fine but avoid on a Sunday because the place is packed and, more often than not, very noisy. During the week the restaurant has a better atmosphere and is very popular with the locals. However, it is perhaps a little pricey; the food is nothing out of the ordinary. Breakfasts are probably the best as they are very big portions but expect to wait for what may seem like eternity before it actually arrives.

Tippoo Sahib

129a Rose Street, EH2 3DT, Edinburgh

3 from pafc (47%) on August 28th, 2007 (1 year ago)

I have had take away twice from this restaurant and it was slightly uninspiring both times (Chicken Jalfrezi & Lamb Bhuna). I think this place caters more for the Rose Street drinkers as it generally seems busy with groups of lads out for a good drink.

However, it is very reasonably priced (£10-£12 for naan, rice and curry) and in a good central location, and like all good Indian restaurants it is underground!

Hard Rock Cafe

20 George Street, EH2 2PF, Edinburgh

3 from pafc (47%) on August 28th, 2007 (1 year ago)

It is like being in the Hard Rock Cafe - decent enough burger and chips served by friendly albeit Americanised staff. I always think it is a bit pricey as the burgers aren't jaw droppingly good as they should be for £10. But you know what to expect and I do love restaurants with road signs nailed to the walls!
