Centotre

Decent food and service but at a price. I ate in Centotre following a gushing review by a colleague at work and was a little disappointed by both the food and the rather excessive cost (£150 for three!).
We all had 'normal' Italian starters, bruschetta and the like and then one chicken, one steak and (me) one liver (liver is a cheap cut of meat and should not cost £17.95). I and my co-diners all enjoyed our mains and the wine that we had chosen but were less happy about the desserts, this may have been down to the descriptions rather than the puddings themselves but I don't think any of us finished them. The dining room occupies a beautiful space and is furnished in an appealing minimalist style but suffers a little from echoes as there are no soft furnishings to absorb the sound; this refectory atmosphere is all well and good but not what one expects at this end of the price range.
I may well go back but must remember to take my credit card!

I was here for a work Xmas party last year and it was pretty good for that. I had a parma ham starter that was pretty good and the gang had garlic breads which were massive - I then had a massive pizza which was thin crust and lovely toppings. I think everyone was generally happy with the result on their mains but then we were easily pleased. Overall it was an enjoyable evening and the service was about average (had to order a drink several times to get it and it was pricey)
I'd go again but not too often and only if I had ages to take my time over my meal.

Spirit of Thai

It got off to a good start here, the chicken satay starter was amazing, the satay sauce was fab. However, it was short lived - the main course thai curry was not great, the chicken was slimy and the sauce watery. Really disappointing after such a good start.

China Palace
27 Bernard Street, EH6 6SH, Edinburgh
from nettles (95%) on August 22nd, 2007 (1 year ago)
It's near my work. They have one of those all you can eat buffets where they give you a container which you are to treat as a trough and stuff as much as you can inside, close, and go. Not bad for one of these places. Had your regular array of UK style Chinese food (ie. nothing at all like Chinese food) Lots of fried stuff, prawns, mushrooms, chicken with the appropriate hyper colour sauces. And not many veggies involved. The crispy seaweed was especially tasty - I had not had it before. tasked like deep fried essence of the sea.
Overall, not bad for a lunch stop when you are craving cheap Chinese.

Not a bad place to eat out in the centre of town - the food is good quality though with the huge scale of the dining area it is never going to be spectacular. The staff are friendly and more competent than you might encounter elsewhere on George Street.

Yeah- same old same old! Amazingly mobbed almost all the time at the weekend!
I'm a big fan of the burgers here though - they are very tasty. Also quite nice milkshakes and desserts. Service is fairly prompt and it's entirely likely you can do a shared starter, mains and a dessert with drinks for around £40.
Crap decor though.

Ryan's Bar

from irishphat (80%) on August 17th, 2007 (1 year ago)
Had an after work feed here with some pals a few weeks ago and it didn't do much for us really. Pub grub, friendly staff, slightly pricey for what it is. Wouldn't fuss about going back and would probably try and go to the Cambridge Bar instead to be honest.

Went here for Valentines day a couple of years ago and it was a real pack 'em in scenario. Food was ok but service was fairly non-existent to be honest. Possibly harsh to judge it on a crap night to go there but even still they sold their sole fast enough. Queue out the door mind you. I wouldn't go again based on my experience but neither would I urge you not to go.

Jimmy Chung's

Not much to say - it's not bad, slightly packed in seats but it's reasonable, tasty and it is what it is. I'd go again but I wouldn't make a big deal about it.
