Izzi

A 'Chinese-Japanese' sushi restaurant. Not a fusion of both cuisines thankfully (which one would imagine involves the stir-frying of sushi. Hey, I'd try that!), just an establishment that is both a predominantly sushi restaurant, which also happens to serve Chinese food.

Now, I've never had the Chinese food there, so I can't really judge it on that basis. But the sushi?

Well, for the inexperienced sushi-eater, this place will do you a good introductory course in the art of ordering and eating sushi (even if you don't know your nigirisushi from your maki from your sashimi. And if you're still clueless, just wiki it up on wikipedia, yeah?), which is pretty okay.

Best sushi I've ever had's been in Australia though with it's sizeable Asian community, and the best sushi I've (once) had in Edinburgh was at good ol' (extinct) Yo Sushi. How I miss you Yo Sushi. *sniff*

Word to the wise though, don't tap your chopsticks, DO NOT stick the chopsticks in a bowl of rice (big funeral-related taboo), and lay off the wasabi yeah? Jackass: The Movie, this is not.

Other than that, the nice atmosphere, reasonable prices, friendly staff make the above average fare taste pretty damn good.

The Witchery by the Castle

352 Castlehill, EH1 2NF, Edinburgh

With a magnificent reputation I went here expecting great things. I was let down. Whilst the staff were fine and the décor enchanting, the food was not particularly appealing. None the less, it seems to get its share of glamour. At the table on one side was Mark Owen (Take That) and on the other side was Brian Ferry. This did not make up for a lacklustre performance from the chefs though. I wouldn't bother if I were you.

The Olive Branch Bistro

91 Broughton Street, EH1 3RX, Edinburgh

The decor here is lovely, big windows comfy seats. Everything was fine. I just felt that for what you got and the price you paid there was a big difference. My friend and I went out for lunch. We had two starters and two mains and two drinks which came to around £30.00. The only problem was that the size of the portions were very small. My friend had morrocan chicken (roughly £11.00) which tasted fine, but it was half a chicken breast (butterflied to make it look larger!) and about half a cup of cous cous. I had a starter of chicken and chorizo, which again had a nice flavour to it, but it was two cubes of chicken and two cubes of chorizo for around £4.50/£5.00. The staff were attentive, the food tasted fine - not the best I have ever had but most definitely not the worst - but really you would always need two courses!

The Waterline

The Shore, EH6 6RD, Edinburgh

Perfectly adequate pub grub. The staff were attentive, but not overly friendly. I had a cajun chicken burger and it was tasty, but nothing special.

No. 39 Delicatessen

Very overpriced for what it is. And the staff are a little too friendly. Slightly creepy.

The Olive Branch Bistro

19 Colinton Road, EH10 5DP, Edinburgh

The food was fine and the location good, but the staff were too noisy. It was a quiet time of day and the barman and waitress just kept talking - loudly! But other than that, it makes a nice change to Cafe Grande.

Montpelier's

159-161 Bruntsfield Place, EH10 4DG, Edinburgh

3 from jwjlewis (79%) on July 17th, 2007 (1 year ago)

For food this place is fine, but only for lunch. As the evening approaches pretentious people flock here in their droves! The revamp a few years ago was not worth the money as the acoustics are dreadful. You'd be much better off going down the road to Kings Bar - oh, but that has turned into Bisque! What is happening to the bars in Bruntsfield?

Gurkha

128 Morningside Road, EH10 4BX, Edinburgh

Nothing special. The décor is the standard through back to the 1980s that you frequently get in Indian restaurants and the food is not that tasty.

Centraal

32a West Nicolson Street, EH8 9DD, Edinburgh

3 from jwjlewis (79%) on July 17th, 2007 (1 year ago)

A fairly nice restaurant with pretty good food. It does not specifically serve one type of food brilliantly, but it does serve all food fairly well. However, the bar is a bit pretentious, but then if you're going out after work in your suit, then it'll probably suit you to a tee.

The Canny Man's

239 Morningside Road, EH10 4QU, Edinburgh

3 from lkhenson (26%) on July 17th, 2007 (1 year ago)

The atmosphere is amazing, and the drink on offer second to none. But if they were any more unfriendly their eyes would catch fire. You think a style bar is pretentious? Try this place, it really is in a world of its own.
