The Olive Branch Bistro

The food was fine and the location good, but the staff were too noisy. It was a quiet time of day and the barman and waitress just kept talking - loudly! But other than that, it makes a nice change to Cafe Grande.

Montpelier's

from jwjlewis (76%) on July 17th, 2007 (1 year ago)
For food this place is fine, but only for lunch. As the evening approaches pretentious people flock here in their droves! The revamp a few years ago was not worth the money as the acoustics are dreadful. You'd be much better off going down the road to Kings Bar - oh, but that has turned into Bisque! What is happening to the bars in Bruntsfield?

Gurkha

Nothing special. The décor is the standard through back to the 1980s that you frequently get in Indian restaurants and the food is not that tasty.

Centraal

A fairly nice restaurant with pretty good food. It does not specifically serve one type of food brilliantly, but it does serve all food fairly well. However, the bar is a bit pretentious, but then if you're going out after work in your suit, then it'll probably suit you to a tee.

The Canny Man's
239 Morningside Road, EH10 4QU, Edinburgh

The atmosphere is amazing, and the drink on offer second to none. But if they were any more unfriendly their eyes would catch fire. You think a style bar is pretentious? Try this place, it really is in a world of its own.

Starbucks

Starbucks is Starbucks. I say you can't go wrong. Always consistent quality, and atmosphere. If you're against Starbucks why bother reading the review. Those dedicated to the 'bucks will find it to be just what they expect.

Black Medicine Coffee Company

Good décor and seating and the staff are perfectly satisfactory. However, the food could do with a little more effort. Whilst the bagels and paninis are, in themselves, okay; their presentation could be improved upon - a touch of salad on the plate maybe. A little effort would go a long way.

Henrick's

Ate here on a Monday night. The menu said that if you have a burger on a Monday night you can get a pint for just a pound extra. I only noticed this after we'd eaten. When the bill arrived I enquired and was told that it didn't apply as the burger I had was a special and, regardless, I would have had to request the offer when I ordered. I got the impression that she just couldn't be bothered to go and change bill on the till.
Anyway, whatever. The couple of quid I would have saved on the offer I made back by not leaving her a tip.
The food was fine. Pretty standard pub grub. A bit over priced for what it is with burger and chips about £8.
Nonetheless, I'd still recommend it for a burger and pint if you're in the area. But don't go out your way - the staff certainly won't!

Dario's
85 Lothian Road, EH3 9AW, Edinburgh
from Owen (33%) on July 6th, 2007 (1 year ago)
A cheap and cheerful option if ever there was. Food is passable and service quite quick. When I was last there they had 3 courses for £4.95 at lunch, which you can't really argue with. A popular place if you head out straight out from work for drinks and then find youself a bit boozy and hungry about 9 o'clock. Got to be Darios.

MP's Bistro
Parliament House Hotel, EH1 3BJ, Edinburgh
from alison (16%) on July 2nd, 2007 (1 year ago)
Took our son here for a birthday supper. Not quite what I was expecting, decor was a little tired, a hotch potch of tartan and pine. Food was okay but certainly not memorable. Staff were very pleasant and obliging. Not a place I would rush back to however.
