Frankenstein

Having eaten at Frankensteins on many occasions I have yet to be dissapointed. With a reasonably priced menu and bar prices around the average price for a city centre bar Frankensteins may be a bit on the touristy side for some.

This is my local so I was interested as to what the refurb and change of hands would be like. It didn’t disappoint – the décor is stylish and the food menu is varied and appealing. The drinks menu has a unique touch and specialises in lots of different types of gins; being a gin drinker I appreciated this and was keen to give some of them a try.
I have only eaten once here and tried the all day breakfast for £7. It was slightly disappointing – it took quite a long time to arrive and, when it did, it was slightly cold. Personally, I thought it had far too many beans and not enough of the yummier things such as sausages, eggs, bacon etc.
On the contrary, friends have been very impressed with their lunch and dinner menus so I will definitely go back and give them a try.

The Voodoo Rooms

I went here for dinner last Friday night and it was OK. I had linguini as a main which was fine but nothing special - it was a decent size and hit the spot.
My dining partners had the haddock and chips which they assured me was nice. Mains were approximately £8-£12.
Service was not so great - the girl waitress we had was pretty rude. She seemed confused by the fact we wanted "house wine" and kept acting us to specify - how annoying.. if we wanted to specify we wouldn't have said house wine!
Overall, it was fine, but I wouldn't rush back. Better for some drinks instead.

I noticed this bar had changed hands last week so went in for a drink with a friend last night. Admittedly we didn't have anything to eat, so can't comment there. The menu looked appealing, if perhaps slightly pricey for bar food in this part of town.
It has hardly changed from the Human Be-in. New decor, but the layout's identical - it still doesn't have much atmosphere and we left after one drink and went to Assembly. The most obvious and least welcome change is a huge TV on the wall on the left as you enter. Last night it was playing the Rangers game at high volume. Really classy.
I might go back some time and try the food, but I'm not in a hurry to. I'll update my review then.

Songkran Two
8 Gloucester Street, EH3 6EG, Edinburgh
from mdavidson (89%) on April 7th, 2008 (2 months ago)
After a few drinks on Saturday evening in Stockbridge, 4 of us turned up at Songkran Two with no advance booking. We were told that there would be a table in 1/2 hour so to come back then. We offered to give our names to book the table but were told by the head waitress that she would remember our faces. So we nipped across to the Baillie Bar to fill the 30 minutes.
When we returned to the restaurant we were asked, by the head waitress again, if we had a reservation. We explained that we had been in just half an hour earlier and after 5 seconds of a blank expression from the waitress the penny dropped and she did, thankfully, recognise us.
The room had quite a nice ambience and despite being full it was not too noisy. The menu had a good range of interesting looking dishes. For started I had a pancake thing which contained prawns, vegetables, pork and some nuts. While it was tasty, it did feel a bit like the previous night's leftovers wrapped in a pancake. For main I had a chicken curry dish which was nice and spicey, sort of zingy, but without being too hot.
Service was average - it seemed like the staff and kitchen were a bit stretched as my table of 4 did not all receive their dishes at the same time, there was a gap of a couple of minutes for both courses. They also just put down the dishes without explaining what they were and we had to work out for ourselves who had ordered what.
The meal was a very reasonably priced at £20 per head for 2 courses, wine and tea/coffee. One thing disappointed me a little - when other diners were given their bills they were accompanied by mints - ours wasn't.
So, overall the food was very good but it was let down a little by the service.

Peking Inn

This restaurant is also 5 minutes' walk from where I live, so having read profetta77's review about their delivery service, I went to collect the food myself.
I phoned to order and left my flat pretty much immediately to collect it and it was ready when I got there. Ding!
I had shredded chicken in chilli sauce and boiled rice. Only £4.60 and loads of food. It was fine. Not much sauce - it was a bit hard work finishing it as there was so much and it was a bit dry. Pretty tasty though.
As it's cheap and convenient for me, I might well use them again, but will try a dish with more sauce.

Yet another business I was sure I had reviewed but clearly haven't. Here I go again then!
3 of us went here a week or so ago and had a reasonable meal. The tables in the back where we were seated were cramped and a little bit exposed to kitchen and toilet traffic. I don't want to be a huge moan but it was a bit cafeteria-like for me to feel like it was a treat to be there (take from that what you will).
We had some tasty starters, big menu - plenty to choose from. We picked 3 mains a couple of tasty naans and a couple of portions of rice and we had plenty for all of us. Service wasn't bad - I'm not overly picky as my other reviews will testify but I certainly wouldn't say there was anything stand out about this joint. Slightly spoiled by a couple of hairs popping up in two of our mains (at the end of the meal unfortunately).
If I'm honest I'd go to Wild Elephant or Fenwicks in that area before I'd go back to Voujon. It's decent but nothing special. (I'd really been looking forward to going too so I wanted it to be good) and it was fine but I say again - nothing special.
I will say it was decent value though. Definitely not too expensive.

Scran Barley
20 Leopold Place, EH7 5LB, Edinburgh
from Maggie McClure (19%) on April 2nd, 2008 (3 months ago)
Food really not bad, though the duck confit was chicken salad - the really nice waiter told us that the duck delivered that morning turned out to be chicken. The steak main course was excellent, but the lamb shank had a suspiciously brown sauce. The Arbroath smokie dish was well received, and the haggis and chicken was delicious. BUT the surroundings were really pretty grotty - 70s grunge, really, although the laughter from the adjoining bar, which is part of the hotel above, was appealing. House wine very acceptable, at £9.50. And the waiter was lovely. But in truth, with all the competition, we won't be going back.

Lovely restaurant with friendly and efficient service. I loved the wine list which is very skewed to South West France - try the Picpoul, it's excellent!
The pot au feu was a little bland and disappointing but this won't prevent me coming back for another go!

Amicus Apple
17 Frederick Street, EH2 2EY, Edinburgh
from davidm (17%) on March 25th, 2008 (3 months ago)
went to Amicus Apple for a birthday dinner a couple of months back now. Food was surprisingly good and the cocktails were something else. Jack Daniels and apple juice - strange but nice. The only let down and a big one and that was the service - 30 minutes for our starters and only 4 of the 6 arrived. Waitress disappeared for 15 minutes and eventually managed to flag her down, she made no apologies for the mistake and brought out the starter with the main courses. Not the best but I think I'd be prepared to give this place a second chance if only for the cocktails.
+ cocktail
- pretentious, service
