Port Inn

48-50 Constitution Street, EH6 6RS, Edinburgh

4.5 from profeta77 (57%) on May 13th, 2008 (3 days ago)

Brilliant pub Grub!

I went there the other week for lunch and I had a Home-made burger for £3.50 only! Portion was big with lots of fries and a nice and tasty home made burger served with beautiful fresh salad (tomato, peppers, lettuce and onions). And a nice cold bottle of San Miguel (you can have a juice if you don't drink alcohol).

I usually have a burger and a beer for £4.49 at JD Wetherspoon and the burger meat is dry and tasteless, salad non-existent and chips portion as small as a handful.

A workmate had a Chicken sandwich as well and came with lots of salad and fries too. The sandwich was a massive with nice char grilled chicken fillets for about £6 only.

Atmosphere was nice and friendly and I loved the decoration of the pub. They have a massive beer garden too and they do BBQs on Sunday. Worth a try!

I never give 5 star reviews (nowhere's "perfect"), but this relatively new restaurant on Hanover Street where Tijuana Yacht Club used to be came pretty close. Three of us ate there last night (Friday). We had a fantastic meal. Excellent value, no nonsense British food well cooked and served with a smile.

We started the meal with a bottle of English Chapel Down bubbly. At £40 it was a bit of a splurge, but worth every penny. The wine list continued to entice us and we enjoyed an excellent red Italian (Primitivo Bricco, I think) with the rest of the meal. It was one of about 30 red wines they had to choose from under £20.

I had wild mushroom rarebit to start. Very tasty, and a good size for a starter. For main I had one of their specials - a roll of lamb breast. Quite a fatty cut of meat but beautifully tender and the accompanying veg was perfect. And a huge amount of food for less than a tenner! One of my friends had boiled salt beef for his main which wasn't really to my taste but he raved about.

For dessert a couple of us had bread and butter pudding and the other had rhubarb and custard.

With the bubbly and one of their more expensive reds and 3 courses each, the bill still came in at under £40 a head. It would be possible to eat for half that price if you just go for 2 courses and a glass of wine - absolutely unbeatable value for this quality of food in this part of town.

I will be returning soon! Make sure to book - they still seem to be riding the wave of a bunch of good reviews they received upon opening.

Old Penang

21 Dalziel Place, EH7 5TP, Edinburgh

4.5 from John (10%) on May 9th, 2008 (1 week ago)

It's hard to find a place where you get great asian food just like you would be served if you were in Thailand, but the Old Penang does it.

Oloroso

33 Castle Street, EH2 3DN, Edinburgh

4.5 from selle (13%) on May 6th, 2008 (1 week ago)

Definitely going back!

Great food, good service. A bit pricey, but was expecting that. Extensive drinks menu, but not many non-alcoholic drinks (this becomes an issue when pregnant!). Try sister restaurant - Roti - round the corner for good Indian food without the price tag.

Taste Good

67-71 Slateford Road, EH11 1PR, Edinburgh

4.5 from RossDouglas (25%) on May 3rd, 2008 (1 week ago)

As a regular customer since the Taste Good first opened its doors I would highly reccomend it to anyone wishing to sample Chinese food at its best.

The underground dining area can be a bit off putting at first but once your food arrives you will forget all about this.

Dishes worth trying include Aromatic Crispy Duck with Pancakes (Pricey at £12.20 but more than worth it) Shredded Beef with Chilli (Spicy but not too hot that you can't taste anything else) and Chicken with Yellow Bean sauce.

Khushi's

9 Victoria Street, EH1 2HE, Edinburgh

4.5 from sboyd (36%) on May 2nd, 2008 (2 weeks ago)

I've been to Khushi's a few times now and it is always great. Their veggie selection is not bad for a non-veggie restaurant and their carrot and orange juice is gorgeous (though I've yet to convince anyone else to try it too...). And I'd heartily recommend the tandoori mushrooms - totally yum.

I agree that the place can be really quite noisy, that's what has cost it half a star! But when it is quiet, it's lovely. I noticed that some of the other reviews stated that the staff were impersonal or that they rushed you, I have to say that I have never had those experiences.

The staff are very quick at delivering the food and clearing up, but they also have a fantastic sense of humour and are always ready for a giggle. However, they don't hang around, they are always speeding off to help someone else, so that may make them appear rushed.

On our last visit, they were quick to bring the bill, but left us to chat for another half an hour at least - we were the ones to move, they didn't make us feel as if we had to.

And they have never lurked when I've been in, except to clean up a very, very messy table that we'd covered in poppadom and naan crumbs - oops ;)

All this and at a quite reasonable price too - Khushi indeed :)

Fishers in the City

58 Thistle Street, EH2 1EN, Edinburgh

4.5 from Mike and Lynne (20%) on April 25th, 2008 (3 weeks ago)

Could not fault this restaurant. Service is attentive but not overbearing reflecting the relaxed atmosphere. Food is excellent, fish soup was simply stunning, main courses - fish pie and Stonebass were again faultless. Pudding was a chocolate crepe filled with mascarpone and morello cherries, again perfect not oversweet and aided by some fresh tangy raspberries. Very good wine lst with house wines starting at £13.95. Bill came to £73, excellent value for money. Highly recommend.

Amazing how this place has been revived. Really stylish and comfortable with a wide ranging food & drinks menu. Lots of choices well prepared and presented. Great eats and good value, I'll certainly be back.
