What a great place. From the outside it looks to be nothing more than a kebab house. In fact, when you enter it still looks like a kebab house. It is anything but!
There are 4 tables for 4 and a few counters to sit at too. The food is excellent, the portions are plentiful and the service is quick and very unobtrusive. The takeaway counter is always busy and you may get bumped once or twice if you're seated in the wrong place, but strangely this doesn't matter.
I completely disagree with foodie's comments about zero ambiance. I found it to have quite the opposite. It is the kind of place where everyone shows respect for everyone else, everyone minds their own business, nobody is too loud and people enjoy going. This was shown not only by the queue at the counter, but also by the phone ringing regularly with people placing orders and people waiting to take our seats once we had left. Again, strangely not something that you can find annoying in a place like this.
As my star rating shows, I would definitely recommend this place. And again, contrasting foodie's comments, I think a great place for a first date; it shows you have no pretensions and prioritise substance over façade.
This is one of those places that only locals will know about, so keep it secret.

Really great food and C Scott is right - the atmosphere is great and you feel like part of the family. The menu is brilliant and the mixed platters are gorgeous. And the homemade mango ice-cream... mmmnnn :)

Tex Mex II
64 Thistle Street, EH2 1EN, Edinburgh
from Kevin (17%) on February 12th, 2008 (9 months ago)
I agree with Jake, the best Mexican was the Tijuana Yacht Club until it sadly closed. Tex Mex is the next best thing! Very small but large portions, very nice for a romantic meal... according to my other half!

Good service and good food, always stop in and grab a take-away box if I'm going to the cinema. Never had a problem.

Totally excellent. Quality experience, authentic, really nice folk. All of the dishes look great coming out - I regularly have the Chicken Tikka Masala which is drenched in lime, amazing. Mango Lassi also great.

Really excellent, I have visited Khushis on Victoria Street many times to sit in and the one on Broughton St for takeaway - excellent service, and the food is second to none. The stuffed fish curry is my favourite.
