Le Mouton Noir

3 Viewforth, EH10 4JD, Edinburgh

4.5 from Gwen (10%) on January 25th, 2008 (10 months ago)

This is the best restaurant in Edinburgh! I've been twice and on both occasions the food was authentic and top quality. The food is quite rich (typically French) and so you may find you don't need dessert. This would be a shame though as the 3 crème Brulee option is a real treat. Service is top-notch. You're best to book as it's very popular (though the first time I visited they managed to squeeze us in). A good place to impress visitors.

Hula

4.5 from mooret (9%) on January 24th, 2008 (10 months ago)

What a relief to find a juice alternative to the pubs on the Grassmarket. A relaxing, friendly and chilled place to grab a snack, read the paper or just watch people walk by. I really liked the Cajun Chicken wrap and the Ginger Jack juice. Great place to rest my bones after shopping on Victoria Street. I will definitely be back.

Smashing.

Or rather, juicing!

Marvellous juice, which washed down my tasty lunch all the better.

Cant get fresher than that, I watched them smoosh fruit into a glass ready for me to enjoy. it was excellent! service was spot on, and some rather good tunes were playing too. Altogether, a sweet spot to chill in the town with some healthy, tasty snackage!

Peter's Yard

27 Simpsons Loan, EH3 9GG, Edinburgh

4.5 from Craig (36%) on January 21st, 2008 (10 months ago)

A sophisticated and fresh addition to Edinburgh's cafe scene, Peter's Yard offers a relaxed 'scandinavian chic' environment in which to wile away the hours.

With an in-house bakery the bread is truly delicious and worth the visit alone. Add to this a wide range of cakes, muffins, treats and some great coffees which are hard to resist.

Quality is of utmost importance in this establishment and evident in all they produce - though does not necessarily come cheap. The bacon and pate sandwich was a real winner and, like all the food on offer, is somewhat different to the offering in your average cafe. It was also nice to see some latte art finally reach Edinburgh and indicates that the staff here are on top of their game.

Good stuff indeed - though at a price.

Itihaas

17-19 Eskbank Road, EH22 1HD, Edinburgh

4.5 from JuneCoombs (10%) on January 19th, 2008 (10 months ago)

I've had a most wonderful time in this gem of a restaurant the food is delicious, good quality ingredients, and a wonderful blend of tastes. You have to wade through a weighty impressive menu I was spoilt for choice.

I do enjoy and appreciate good food that is well cooked and presented well.

The staff are great and attentive nothing is to much trouble for them.

Itihaas is clearly intended to look opulent and rather stylish they are clearly aiming high this is what Dalkeith has needed for a long time! I wish Matin and his team all the very best!!!

Tiger Lily

125 George Street, EH2 4JN, Edinburgh

4.5 from jcaughey (73%) on January 16th, 2008 (10 months ago)

I went to tigerlily last night because I was emailed one of the 2 4 1 vouchers circulating just now.

It was absolutely brilliant, I have never had service as friendly and good as we had at Tiger Lily, we were served by a Welsh waitress who really knew her stuff, was attentive without being overly so and really made the evening.

The food came quickly and was divine - we opted for the chocolate fondue for pudding which was fun and a bit of a novelty (even though I managed to get more chocolate on my top than in my mouth!)

A really great - inexpensive night. £39 for 2 people - we had a bottle of house white, 2 mains and the fondue. We got one of the main courses free - but still, a main was roughly £10. Excellent all round. I will certainly be returning!

La Partenope

96 Dalry Road, EH11 2AX, Edinburgh

4.5 from nettles (94%) on January 15th, 2008 (10 months ago)

Came here on chance that they would have a table at 8pm on Saturday... Never have they had one but this time we were in luck! I had always wanted to eat at this cute place having sampled many treats from its sister cafe, Dolce y Salato, across the street.

We were greeted right away and after a few back and forth conversations (in Italian) between the staff they lead us to a table for two. Swift and polite the whole way through the meal.

We only ordered mains and desserts for our meal and next time I think we will go the whole hog as it was all so good. I had the mixed seafood (I forget what it was called!) which was baked with oil, garlic and lemon. A mix of langostine, fish fillet, shrimp and (one) scallop. I wish it was just a huge plate of langostine though! Despite this, it was cooked beautifully. My husband had a pasta dish with mushrooms and crab. Very good. The pasta was obviously fresh but I thought they could have been more heavy handed on the crab.

For dessert I had tiramisu (the real kind) and he had the chocolate cake. As I am not a huge fan of chocolate cake I thought it was ok but have to say that I had to smuggle in a taste before it was devoured. The tiramisu was nice and how it should be, not made with sponge cake and cream!

I would definitely recommend this place to anyone interested in an authentic Italian meal in cozy surroundings.

Cloisters

26 Brougham Street, EH3 9JH, Edinburgh

4.5 from craig777 (69%) on January 11th, 2008 (10 months ago)

This pub is brilliant. It is a break from the norm and just bring everything back the simple things of what you need from a bar - good service, good range of alcohol and you can actually have a chat and hear what you are talking about. It has a good mix of people that go there from the old to the students and all can drink in harmony and not feel out of place.

Would recommend this to anyone who is looking for something different and enjoys a quite drink. The building itself is worth a visit
