Bar Napoli

75 Hanover Street, EH2 1EE, Edinburgh

4.5 from paddyhr (47%) on October 25th, 2007 (10 months ago)

I have partaken of delightful pizza here both before and after a night on the town, this place is exactly how an Italian ought to be, right down to the banter of the staff, including the kitchen which is really just a corner of the resaurant. Always seem to bump into loads of people I know here so I must be target audience.

Giving it a pretty high score because I have been quite a few times and always really enjoyed it.

Henderson's

For someone from a beef farming family to repeatedly enjoy the services of a vegetarian restaurant/cafe/takeaway is surely a huge compliment.

With informal sit in downstairs, takeaway upstairs or proper restaurant round the corner every pang of hunger is catered for. Personal favourite is the take out meals, hearty soup (usually 3 choices) salads (with tattie ones and the like) and a hot option with beans or something else yummy. Take it to Princes St gardens and laugh at the fools with Boots meal deals or a pasty offering from McD's or BK. Your insides will thank you (then remember to have a big steak for your tea - and make sure it is British Beef).

Zanzero

A bright and modern addition to Edinburgh's cafe/restaurant scene. The food is uncomplicated, fresh and allows great ingredients to shine - a far cry from some of the more traditional Italian restaurants which litter the city. The pizzas are to be highly recommended and as for the cakes, well I would make sure that you leaves some room for something rich, creamy and very naughty indeed.

If you don't have time for food the coffees are great and very good value. At £2 for a double espresso it puzzles me that Starbucks can survive in such close proximity to this place (a few yards down the hill). Only quibble would be the fact that every time I go I am given only one sugar with my coffee - some of us like it sweet and don't want to have to ask for more!

All in all, a great place for a bustling lunch. Just watch out for the acid green walls - not a great environment for those of a delicate constitution.

My local and I love it!

I have spent many an afternoon in here using the wireless, stroking the pub dog (he is called Carson and is very friendly and cuddly) and eating McCoys - happy days :)

They only do pies in terms of food but they are so good!

It is the closest thing I have found to a friendly, comfortable countryside pub that I have found in Edinburgh and I am so pleased that is my local because it is great.

Highly recommended.

Sushiya

19 Dalry Road, EH11 2BQ, Edinburgh

4.5 from ddcook (64%) on October 10th, 2007 (10 months ago)

This is the best Sushi restaurant in Edinburgh, to be fair it is not exactly overwhelmed with competition challenging for the crown but even with a little more competition in the marketplace it would take some beating.

The surroundings are small without being cramped, I had heard a lot about the general atmosphere of Sushiya though on the evening we went there was neither any of the promised Japanese videos or pop music over the stereo, slightly dissapointing. We opted for a Sashimi and Nigri platter to share for starter, which was a great start, all fresh, good for fish v rice and plentiful for the price we paid for it. I accompanied this with a mug of green tea, which was rather large but little more than tepid, which soon turned to cold before the starter was out. For main I opted for the eel which was fantastically cooked, boneless and coated in a bbq sauce which was very tasty without overpowering the fish in any way, perfect. My dining partner had Ramen with chicken, the chicken was fairly average but the soup and noodles with it were very very very tasty and the whole dish was very plentiful and even with me helping we were unable to finish it off.

Add in 2 beers and we only just squeaked over £30 for the 2 of us, which is excellent value. Definitely one to go back to.

Cloisters

Although I've been here loads of times in the past, like vegasmonkey previously mentioned, I wasn't sure whether or not it served food until I was there tonight to meet up with a friend and we both decided we wanted some food.

It turns out that as well as having an extensive range of malts and ales, Cloisters also has an excellent pub food menu. We had a couple of pub food staples - sausage and mash and battered haddock and chips. Both hit the spot. And at less than £7 each, very well priced.

The barman made sure to point out that everything was cooked fresh on site - I wonder whether he noticed my EdinburghMenus.com umbrella when we walked in?!

Overall, I can't recommend this pub highly enough for a few good pints and a bit of top quality pub nosh. Good place to catch up with friends - excellent pub atmosphere - no background music to battle with when having a conversation!

I've been here a few times and it's a great restaurant. There is always a good atmosphere and it is reasonably priced. The food is fantastic - especially the lamb saag and garlic naan which are brilliant.

This is an expensive restaurant but definitely worth a visit for a special occasion.

I especially like how they serve you oysters between your starter and main course - I felt very posh indeed!

The dining area is beautiful and very grand, with each table having its own private booth. We had a lovely meal here and the service was top notch.

Lai Thai

23 Brougham Place, EH3 9JU, Edinburgh

4.5 from jwjlewis (76%) on September 16th, 2007 (11 months ago)

Went out for dinner for two and had a wonderful time. The food was wonderful, the service was very prompt and the décor was inviting. When we left I suddenly discovered a lot more people had come in since we had - the acoustics were obviously so good that I hadn't heard them. As for the staff - we were served by two beautiful young Thai ladies who struck the just right balance of attentiveness and friendliness.

Highly recommended.

The Cambridge Bar

20 Young Street, EH2 4JB, Edinburgh

4.5 from vegasmonkey (37%) on September 9th, 2007 (11 months ago)

Great little food serving pub only minutes from Edinburgh city centre. The Cambridge bar is situated on a quiet street away from the bustle of the town. The menu consists of burgers only, which is great if you like burgers. They offer a large selection of toppings and themed burgers, I have tried quite a few and all were really decent. Their chips are great too, really chunky and fresh. I would recommend ordering one side of chips between two, with a hearty burger it is difficult to manage them by yourself. The Cambridge has a healthy drinking crowd too, which is great for atmosphere but means that it can be difficult to get a table during busy times.
