Lai Thai

23 Brougham Place, EH3 9JU, Edinburgh

4.5 from jwjlewis (81%) on September 16th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Went out for dinner for two and had a wonderful time. The food was wonderful, the service was very prompt and the décor was inviting. When we left I suddenly discovered a lot more people had come in since we had - the acoustics were obviously so good that I hadn't heard them. As for the staff - we were served by two beautiful young Thai ladies who struck the just right balance of attentiveness and friendliness.

Highly recommended.

The Cambridge Bar

20 Young Street, EH2 4JB, Edinburgh

4.5 from vegasmonkey (37%) on September 9th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Great little food serving pub only minutes from Edinburgh city centre. The Cambridge bar is situated on a quiet street away from the bustle of the town. The menu consists of burgers only, which is great if you like burgers. They offer a large selection of toppings and themed burgers, I have tried quite a few and all were really decent. Their chips are great too, really chunky and fresh. I would recommend ordering one side of chips between two, with a hearty burger it is difficult to manage them by yourself. The Cambridge has a healthy drinking crowd too, which is great for atmosphere but means that it can be difficult to get a table during busy times.

First Coast

First Coast? First Class! This place is a bit out of the way, located to the SW of the city centre. Perhaps that is why the food is so good, it has to rely on returning trade as I don't imagine many people 'drop-in' on their way past. I have eaten there a few times now and have never been disappointed. On my last visit I had a fillet steak; it was up there with the best steaks I have ever eaten, to start with it wasn't overcooked! The menu also has a very strong seafood element to it and contains some unusual but tastey starters. A good location for a quiet meal but even better for dinner with friends. Very reasonably priced and a laid-back, friendly and efficient service.

Absolutely knockout pizza, very fast service, lovely staff and a really nice atmosphere. The restaurant looks tiny from the outside, but in reality it's split across two floors, so it's a fair size.

We found it by chance and went back again later the same week!

Pizza Express

1 Deanhaugh Street, EH4 1LU, Edinburgh

Nicest Pizza Express in town, with a lovely outside area right by the Water of Leith. As usual, food is very nice at Pizza Express prices.

The Basement

10a-12a Broughton Street, EH1 3RH, Edinburgh

4.5 from digitalspaghetti (25%) on August 22nd, 2007 (1 year ago)

I am a regular visitor to The Basement and always take visitors to it because of its excellent food at fantastic prices. The menu has been the same for a while, but the quality and portion of the food is excellent and cheap! They also have an excellent selection of Beers on tap. The Rump and Merlot pie is a great signature dish and the Banoffee pie is to die for. The staff are really friendly too.

Vittoria

I'd been looking forward to visiting here since I noticed it open a couple of months ago. I've heard lots of good things about the Vittoria on Leith Walk, but have never visited as it's on the other side of town.

This is the second time an Italian restaurant has been attempted in this location - Tuscany that opened in September 2005, I think, lasted less than a year. The steak restuarant Green Door followed and proved even less successful. I had eaten in both - Tuscany was fine, nothing special. I suspect that opening just after the festival had finished did them no favours - they probably could have done with the festival gold rush to see them through the year! Green Door was actually really good - the steaks were excellent. But it was never busy - I guess people don't want to pay £20 for a main course very often.

But surely an Italian restaurant can do well here? There is an absolute dearth of DECENT Italian restaurants on the south side. There are some average ones on South Bridge/Nicolson Street serving the Festival Theatre masses, some touristy ones on the mile (though I've heard that Rocco is actually very good) and the frightfully bad Sardi's on Forrest Road.

So I really wanted Vittoria to be good. Things weren't looking promising when we turned up for our 7.30 booking at 7.35 and had to wait for our table. But we only waited a couple of minutes. This is mid-festival and the restaurant was jam-packed, so this is definitely forgivable.

From then on, everything was excellent. Despite the staff being run off their feet, the service was great, with the staff even finding time to keep our wine glasses filled. We has mixed garlic breads to start, followed by pizzas and coffee. The food was excellent. Pizzas were just right - nice crispy bases, not too oily, generous toppings. With a bottle of wine the bill came in under £40.

Overall, a very welcome addition to George IV Bridge. Let's hope the business survives longer than the previous 2 occupants did - going by my experience, I'm sure it will.

The Raj on The Shore

Went here with my partners parents & some of their friends & family.

The menu looked quite pricey as I flicked through it but their was an offer; £10.50 for 2 meals & a glass of beer. Their dishes seem a little spicier than most places so keep that in mind when your ordering. I tried to play it safe with the Chicken Madras (medium spicy) .... 2 pints of beer, a glass of water & a whole naan bread later i was finished and sufficiently knackered! Enjoyed every bite though!

The food & service was great & the waiting staff were happy to entertain our hyper active, 6 year old, Liverpudlian cousin, who was more interested in touching all of the decor, than eating her food.

Will definitely be eating here again!

First Coast

Has never dissapointed once over the last 2 years. Great menu that rotates on a regular basis, but the good stuff always sticks around. Would like to say I have eaten my way round the menu but in reality often struggle to see past the fantastic steak. Starter options are always interesting and usually something a little quirky on there, the deserts always features something that you last had at school dinners but done oh so much better (recently this was set chocolate custard, previously jam roly poly, eton mess etc). Great service, reasonably priced and nice surroundings.

Abstract

33-35 Castle Terrace, EH1 2EL, Edinburgh

4.5 from Owen (35%) on August 16th, 2007 (1 year ago)

This relatively new restuarant is a lovely addition to the Edinburgh restuarant scene. Fairly pricey in the evenings, but £12.95 for 2 courses at lunch is exceptional value. I had the Scottish Salmon Gravadlax to start, followed by the exquisite Roasted Guinea Fowl Breast with Foie Gras.

The service was perfectly competent and attentive. The ambience is lovely. It is only my stingyness that prevented me from giving it an unprecedented 5 stars.
