Taste Good
67-71 Slateford Road, EH11 1PR, Edinburgh
from Emma (19%) on June 30th, 2008 (2 weeks ago)
I usually love takeaway from this place but they just mucked up my order and I'm peeved. tut tut. But usually a great place to eat. Get the prawn toast... it's like nothing you've had before. if you want a vegetable noodle dish you may need to scream VEG! down the phone... don't let this discourage! :)

Diner 7
7 Commercial Street, EH6 6JA, Edinburgh
from vegasmonkey (39%) on June 30th, 2008 (2 weeks ago)
This is a good eating spot. Leith is ace and this place fits right in. It is small and friendly, serving American/Pub-type food. I had a burger, as did most of my companions. It perhaps wasn't the absolute greatest burger I had ever had but it had good clean flavour and was not too greasy. Very reasonably priced too - 4 main courses, 3 puddings, a bottle of wine and some coffees = £63. An excellent spot for an informal, chatty meal.

Jimmy Chung's
30a Grindlay St, EH3 9AP, Edinburgh
from SHESFAMILY (11%) on June 30th, 2008 (2 weeks ago)
My family and I dined here on the 24/06/2008. I had heard that this place was serving good food at reasonable prices and was worth a visit. We agree there was a vast choice of food, and we all found the food to be good. Service was great and we were well looked after. I'd recommend this restaurant and we will definitely be returning. Well done Jimmy Chungs!

The Waterline
The Shore, EH6 6RD, Edinburgh
from Keri (19%) on June 28th, 2008 (3 weeks ago)
This is a lovely place to read your Sunday paper and have a pint and a bite. Relaxed, laid back. Friendly staff. I enjoy a cullin skink and some crusty break with my Sunday Times.
I had my first haggis here as well a few years back, just a little around medallions of chicken. Good way to break a "Yankee" in.
One of my favourite places in Edinburgh and I've lived here two years now.

Monsoon
148 West Granton Road, EH5 1PE, Edinburgh

from Ishkhara (26%) on June 28th, 2008 (3 weeks ago)
Monsoon is a gem of an Indian takeaway which offers some unusual dishes tucked away among the usual fare. Offerings such as the very special Tandoori Murgh Mossalam (tandoor chicken cooked on the bone and served in a minced lamb mossala sauce with fresh herbs and spices) lift this takeaway above the many 'samey' Indian takeaways in the area. As the menu says "If you haven't tried this yet, do yourself a favour now"!

Shapes Restaurant
Bankhead Avenue, EH11 4BY, Edinburgh
from irishphat (76%) on June 26th, 2008 (3 weeks ago)
Was in here for a client dinner a little while ago. Odd setting as pretty much everything is for sale. Food is excellent though and the service is very good too.
It's in a furniture store so you might think it is a bit odd but the decor is pretty unique to Edinburgh, it's just a little out of the way.
I had the soup which was just right and left you wanting more, a steak which was lovely and perfectly cooked and a ginger pudidng which I ended up having two of as one or the others was full and didn't want to have theirs. We had 10 people there and none of them are so polite as to say they liked it when they didn't. It's the second year in a row we've been there with this group and it's a very well subscribed lunch out. (last year was a bit rowdier)
Not too expensive individually, good value, interesting room although it would have been more fun there if it had been busier. Will certainly go again but like I say, you'd have to be in the area, I wouldn't go there just for the food when there are other options in the city centre.

Herbie West End
7 William Street, EH3 7NG, Edinburgh
from Rawlie (49%) on June 26th, 2008 (3 weeks ago)
Top quality sarnie shop in a super convenient location. My fave lunch time stop-off point close to my office. The quality of the bread and rolls they use in Herbies FAR FAR excedes my expectations of what you typically get in a sarnie shop. As well as the bread being delicious the fillings that go in them are always fresh and of a very high quality. A good one (my favourite) is the chicken (not reconstituted!), pesto and cranberry. Stilton and Apple is super (all the cheese is decent stuff) and the chicken liver pate is supreme. I don't think the sarnies are too overpriced - maybe a premium of 20p or so but defo worth it.
It is quite expensive for things like soup and salads though. Millionaires shortbread is the best i've ever had and the service is good too.
Overall highly recommended even if you just want a loaf of bread for breakfast!
yum yum.

Candy Bar
113-115 George Street, EH2 4JN, Edinburgh
from craig777 (63%) on June 26th, 2008 (3 weeks ago)
I went to Candy Bar last night with some friends as in June and July they have a 2-1 voucher for main meals. It was the first time I have been in since it has been renovated and it looked good inside. We went early (as they have drinks promotions on from 5-8pm) and eat and drank till about 8pm. The food was actually very good we all had salads but there is a very good selection of meals available and they are slightly different from usual fayre.
Price wise salads are between £7-9, mains are all between £8-10 and any sides ordered £2-3 so it was good value.
We had some pitchers of cocktails which in happy hour are reduced from £17 to £12 so a bargain.
My only complaint would be that the staff arent overly friendly and it seems they all just hand out there whether they are working or not. We had to wait a while for drinks - when bar staff were just seen to be chatting at the bar. But apart from that was a good night and good value.

Off The Wall
105 High Street, EH1 1SG, Edinburgh

from rachybaby (75%) on June 24th, 2008 (3 weeks ago)
I haven't been to this restaurant for about 3 years now so my review won't be wholly reliable. It is quietly tucked away on the High Street and I'm sure a lot of people have never even noticed it before.
However, I do recommend this restaurant but for special occasions only as I remember the food menu being rather pricey. The food, Scottish cuisine, is fantastic though and I clearly remember that my beef main was delicious.
I would like to return to Off the Wall at some point but certainly when I am feeling more flush with my cash!

Wedgwood
267 Canongate, EH8 8BQ, Edinburgh
from irishphat (76%) on June 24th, 2008 (3 weeks ago)
Definitely a place that you could rely on to deliver nice food in good quantity in a pleasant setting.
Mains were comfortably in the £16-22 range. Starters were ok at £5.95+ and desserts were nicely all the same price at £5.
Also it's all very nice if you're sitting upstairs but downstairs is ok at best. The whole place sits 52 people with 34 of them upstairs. They seem to do one sitting in mid-week so there's no rush on you to finish.
As to the food, I had baked brie and tried a scallop from my other half, both of which were very nice. One of our group had what seemed to be the choice starter (chewy beef - which was fab and plentiful). My brie was great but the caramelised onion was a little too sweet.
We were then treated to an interesting sorbet type thingy which was very tasty. My main was the pheasant but we had people having steak, pork, bream and a vegetarian dish. Everyone was very chuffed with their grub. On to desserts, sticky toffee pudding (great) creme brulee (ok, but I think I'm just expecting too much from this dish and am never ordering it anywhere again), cheese (very good) and lavender ice cream (yum).
The wine was tasty and the service was very friendly and helpful.
All in all it came to £275 (incl tip) for 6 of us. Which isn't that bad to be fair. But then, I wasn't paying!
Probably go back, did like it, but I just can't rave about it like the other reviewers. All in all I would recommend it.
