The Caley Sample Room
42–58 Angle Park Terrace, EH11 2JR, Edinburgh

My local pub and a great one at that. From a drinking point of view it has a good selection of beers, along with an ever changing cask ale selection, always good in my book, every time you go in there is something different. The food is extensive, varied and reasonably priced in selection, both from the menu or the ever changing specials. Starters/bar snacks range from the likes of squid, garlicy prawns, soup or just a good old bowl of chunky chips to have with your beer. Mains are varied with all the pub favourites with a twist... lamb burgers in pitta bread, fancy bangers and mash, lime and coriander mayo with your fish and chips. There is also a good selection of steaks and more restaurant type dishes, but served in a friendly pub environment. A special shout out also has to go to the fantastic olives, marinated in house and fantastically tasty!

Great tasty food from a small but perfectly formed menu, refreshing after overly complicated menus in other Indians in town, the Jalfrezi is my particular favourite. BYOB is good though the old premises were better for bringing the booze from next door as you could bring pints in whereas now you just go next door and buy it by the bottle. Bit noisy due to the size of the place and the bass of the Liquid rooms below which does spoil the atmosphere somewhat for smaller groups and couples.

It has been a couple of months since I have visited and have only been once, however it was a good dining experience and I felt it had got a little of a hard time in previous reviews. Weekend crowd was smart, not pretensious and a mix of families, couples and friends. Good atmosphere in a minimalist setting, friendly and helpful staff. Had a fish starter and steak main, both very good, not the best I have ever had but very tasty and enough to encourage me to go back again!

Golf Tavern

I agree with Andy - the old Golf Tavern should not be missed, before it was refurbished I recall that a corner of the pub could not be used as the ceiling was being held up by a scaffolding pole.
The food is standard generic Edinburgh pub food but this place really excels in sports coverage. The screens are excellent and there are loads of them so you should not have any trouble seeing the action. There is also the bonus of pies at half time for big games and free pints for Scotland victories.

Browns

Browns is great. Nothing fancy with the food but it is good quality and really well priced. I have always left the place feeling happy and fulfilled. I like the outfits that the staff wear, it reminds me of being in Paris in the 50s, not that I was around back then, but I can imagine...

This is my most regular sports watching hang out and have eaten here a number of times.
The food is decent pub fare. I've probably tried most things on the menu and have found the fish and chips to be the best choice - a good sized fish, nice crispy batter (you can choose to have it breaded instead), plenty of chips and tartar sauce.
I most recently ate there on a Thursday night. I ordered fish and chips and my friend chili con carne. After we ordered we noticed that they do 2 for 1 on Tex Mex on Thursdays. We had already paid by card but the bar staff were very helpful and called the kitchen to cancel the fish and changed it to another chili, then refunded the card. I guess they should have pointed the deal out to us when we ordered though - especially as one of us was having something from the Tex Mex menu already.
The chili was good. Not a huge portion and the rice was over cooked (a bit soggy), but it was very tasty. For less than £3 each with the offer, I'm not complaining!
The management seem very on the ball in this bar. They always do offers when sport's on - penalty kick competition for the FA cup final, pies at half time during the 6 nations, free pints for Scottish wins, raffles etc.
Overall, a good little boozer! I don't miss the old Golf Tavern at all. It had already made the transition from charming old man pub to student dive and was well in need of an overhaul.

For Edinburgh this is a really good chippie, the chips are probably the best I have tasted in the city. However, I was disappointed with the fish I was served as it was slightly dry, as though it had been sat for a while after it was fried.

Morningside Spice

from woozyss (37%) on September 4th, 2007 (1 year ago)
It's a close call between Morningside Spice and Voujon as to which I prefer. However I think this one just pips it. Went here last week after not being in over a year, simply cause I moved out the area. I'd forgotten how good the food was. I had chicken karahi for my main which was just the perfect combination of spiciness and flavours. Tasted everyone elses too - the chilli garlic chicken blew my head off. The naan breads are big. Aubgergine pakora starters were slightly disappointing but the veggie pakora certainly made up for that. I would recommend putting another loo in as 1 toilet in an Indian on a Saturday night means a long wait. Will be back soon. Loved it.

The Albanach

I love going to Albanach and have recommended to many. Friendly bar with a great atmosphere and a smaller but perfect dining area at the back. Great for couples or for larger parties and great views down Cockburn St too. Food is brilliant. Soup comes in huge bowls, sausages vary daily and interesting ingredients. The burgers are not stodgetastic at all, good homemade burgers and try them with the pepper sauce, amazing. And for dessert the banoffee pie is gorgeous. The one downside, I have been at the weekend and turned away cause they are always sooo busy.

Wanted to give it 3.5 because of it's generic title but couldn't think of a reason to mark it down further than 4. Nice staff, solid food, great atmosphere and it's quick at a reasonable price! I'll definitely go there again.
Pick of the bunch in that little area.
