Khushi's

9 Victoria Street, EH1 2HE, Edinburgh

4 from irishphat (79%) on October 12th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Went here for dinner recently. you can bring in your own booze, the food is good, the services is nice, the setting is quite good and impressive and the tables are well spread out.

However, I felt it had all been overhyped. I really liked old Khushis and there was something vaguely average about our meal. I couldn't put my finger on it. Perhaps it was because I was sober.

In any case it was good value for the food and I'd recommend it. The fish curry was very tasty and we had this spinach side dish which was excellent.

Also they do these fruit smoothies which I'd not had before and they were fab!

I'll go back but will leave the hype at home!

Thistle Street Bar

39 Thistle Street, EH2 1DY, Edinburgh

The Thistle does great pies. And tidy barmaids. And is yards from my gaff. What more could you want. A beer garden? Oh it has one of them too.

Mussel Inn

61-65 Rose Street, EH2 2NH, Edinburgh

4 from eveybaby (34%) on October 12th, 2007 (1 year ago)

This is undoubtedly one of my favourite restaurants in Edinburgh. The big pots of mussels are very reasonably priced and extremely tasty. Have only ever been for dinner, but it's a very relaxed environment. They serve big seafood platters for sharing (a favourite with me and my friends) with a variety of fish and seafood.

All in all a great wee cosy restaurant - I'm already planning my next visit!

Monster Mash

4a Forrest Road, EH1 2QN, Edinburgh

4 from jcaughey (72%) on October 12th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Cheap and cheerful! Monster mash is great from its retro school dinner plates and tomato ketchup bottles to its menu consisting of you guessed it.... Mash! Proper, quality, comfort food.

Everytime I have been the atmosphere has been great with most tables full.

Although the menu offers vegtarian options if you are lactose intolerant you are a bit stuffed! - all the mash is pre-prepared with butter and milk...

The food comes quickly and is truly scrummy. Staff are generally great, I've been served by some excellent waitresses there but also had a bad experience once as well with a 'not so friendly' member of staff (think it probably had to do with being so busy).

On the whole though a great place to go for some quality, no frills grub. Excellent value for money!

Ignite

272-274 Morrison Street, EH3 8DT, Edinburgh

4 from ddcook (63%) on October 4th, 2007 (1 year ago)

One of the many Indian restaurants in the west end of town and one of the ones I would recommend.

For a start surroundings are pleasant, with a comfortable contemporary feel to the restaurant. Service has been mixed on my visits, during quiet weekdays it is fine, on a busy weekend it can be slow, obviously to be expected on a busier day but at times it has proven to be frustratingly so.

Starters, well to be honest I am normally just a mixed Pakora man when I am out for an Indian, every visit here has been the same, and it is good pakora, but really how do you go wrong with Pakora.

Mains, well over the course of my visits I have tried many, Pathia, Jhalfreizi, Ceylon, all have been good, tasty, not too overpowering in spices, chilli or salt, the veg in the sauce is always nicely cooked, not the overcooked floppy stuff that can often accompany your meat. All the usual trimmings to your usual Indian are done well if not mind blowingly, rice, breads, dahl.

Downsides? I dont find the price particularly easy on the wallet, looking through the menu there is nothing sticks out as being immediately horrendous but once some popadoms, starter, main and a couple of beers are thrown into the mix it always ends up the wrong side of where you would expect it to be, and where other places in town would be in the final bill. Foodwise, no faults, a good solid choice.

Khukuri

8 West Maitland Street, EH12 5DS, Edinburgh

4 from ddcook (63%) on October 4th, 2007 (1 year ago)

A small and fantastic curry house hidden away in Haymarket, very unassuming from the front, in fact very unassuming from the inside, but great food. I first went here a couple of years back however cannot remember what I had, just that it was a great meal. I recently went back again for a 2nd helping and it was just as good as I remembered.

The (apparently) traditional Nepalese Bara we had was a very tasty lentil pancake served with more than its fair share of condiments, in fact enough for two. Onto the main and the rice and naan bread were good, nothing mindblowing but both tasty.

The main dish I went for Kukhura Nepal and damn tasty it was too, perfectly spiced with all flavours that should have been present coming through, the meat was also succelent and well cooked. Not only that but it was a plentiful serving and reasonably priced (takeaway menu).

There are plenty of Indian restaurants in the west end of town but this is certainly the best all rounder, especially given the high prices of some of its nearby competitors.

Compass

44 Queen Charlotte Street, EH7 6EX, Edinburgh

4 from Michelle (18%) on October 4th, 2007 (1 year ago)

I've eaten here for both dinner and lunch and both have been beautiful meals. Some different meals but done simply. Service is always good and cheerful and the atmosphere really nice.

Also enjoyed a proper selection of bread with oil before the meal which not enough restaurants do these days.

The Living Room

I ate here twice this weeked (once for lunch and once for dinner) - rather extravagant I know!

However, the food is lush... On Saturday night I had a seafood risotto which was delicious then I had chocolate fudge cake - yum! The restaurant was busy (obviously being a Sat night) but the food was served quite quickly. Main courses vary from £9 - £20 so it is more expensive than most restaurants but I would say it was worth paying the little extra. The dining area is very grand with separate booths down the side adding extra privacy which is nice.

The following day I ate here for lunch and again, was impressed. We had bruschetta, tiger prawns and two side order of chips and potatoes along with drinks and it was £10 each. Very reasonable.

Our waitress was not as pleasant in comparison to the waiter from the night before but she was efficient and our food arrived quickly once again.

Highly recommended.

Dragonfly

52 West Port, EH1 2LD, Edinburgh

A funky drinking establishment which tends to attract the arty, stylish types. Decor is unique and trendy.

Last time I was there it happened to be Irvine Welsh's secret launch party for his new book and I enjoyed a variety of free cocktails which left me feeling very happy in my choice of drinking establishment that particular evening!

The bar only does bar snacks and side dishes, as far as I know they don't do meals.
