Bar Diesel
19 Shore Place, EH6 6SW, Edinburgh
from Gemma Nicoll (17%) on October 23rd, 2007 (1 year ago)
After 3 very unsucessful attempts to have a nice lunch on Saturday afternoon we went to our old faithful Smoke Stack, however it is no more and instead we found Bar Diesel. How pleasantly surprised we were. Service was great, the food amazing and the price very resonable. We had the haddock fishcakes and stuffed mushrooms - delish. Then the buffallo - Yes buffallo burger and sweet potato and chickpea curry. Both really nice. Highly recommend trying Bar Diesel. The menu is constantly changing but I'm sure whatever you try will be as fresh as our meals were.

A Room in the West End
69 William Street, EH3 7NJ, Edinburgh

This is a small restaurant in the basement of a busy pub, but dont let this put you off. Its predominantly a fish restaurant and not a bad one at that.
I found it to have a good atmposphere (other than the phone which appeared to be linked to the speakers, which was odd as the insesant ringing didnt seem to motivate any form of answering by the waiting staff). Despite the service being moderate at best, the food was good and the menu more than acceptable. The restaurant is also BYOB whcih always helps on the price. My abiding memory of the place is that it had the best cheese board I have seen in Edinburgh.

La P'tite Folie
61 Frederick Street, EH2 1LH, Edinburgh
from Rich (40%) on October 22nd, 2007 (1 year ago)
I like this place. Decked out with black and white photos, it just seems to have Parisian feel (granted I may have been sucked in by the name!). The service is always good, the portions generous and the menu is excellent on its own but the specials are also abundant. There is also a good selection of wine.
I have always found the price to be very reasonable for an evening meal, but went there for a lunch and found it to be almost cheap, and while the menu had obviously been down sized there was still a good variety.
There is another restaurant in the chain located in the West End in a more elegant and larger tudor building, I found that this some how detracted from the more intamate feel of this restaurant.

Really great friendly little cafe.
Fab, attentive staff and a fab menu for a hangover breakfast. I STRONGLY recommend the belgian waffles with bacon and maple syrup... I am drooling at the thought.

Cafe Grande
184 Bruntsfield Place, EH10 4DF, Edinburgh
from eveybaby (32%) on October 22nd, 2007 (1 year ago)
As most of the reviews have already said, this place is great for a wee natter with an old mate. Its relaxed atmosphere means you can sit for ages with a cup of tea and some rocky road cake (delish!). Although it appears very cafe-like, the evening meals are excellent, from dishes as simple as nachos to more exotic pastas/risottos. They do daily specials as well. For some reason it's a lovely place to go when the weather is bad - maybe because it's so warm and welcoming!!

Monster Mash
4a Forrest Road, EH1 2QN, Edinburgh
from Rich (40%) on October 22nd, 2007 (1 year ago)
This place offers wholesome food at an affordable price, and congratulations are due as that is exactly what it does. The decor is basic and the food is served on an array of different plates - which is exactly how this type of place should be. The service is very good and the price more than reasonable.
The food is as comforting, tasty and as abundant as you could wish for. I foolishly ordered the fish and chips as I am dubious about buying bangers and mash as I consider myself an adequate enough chef to prepare this gastronamic treat for myself at home. My meal was excellent, but from all the reports I have heard you havent tasted bangers and mash until you have tried it here! Next time I wont be so naive!

Le Marche Francais
9a West Maitland Street, EH12 5DS, Edinburgh
from naomi (50%) on October 20th, 2007 (1 year ago)
We love this place at work - you can get a great lunch for £5 and still have time to saunter back to work. I just hope that they are yet to complete their new decor scheme as it's looking a little bland and "new" which spoils the feel of it. The seating is at the back of the shop, you can also buy sandwiches/soups etc from here to takeaway. The lunch menu is great if you want soup to start, croque monsieur and drink (tea, coffee or juice) and that's for about £5. Yum Yum. Service is polite and attentive enough for what you pay. A winner with the locals.

Muang Thai
97 Hanover Street, EH2 1DJ, Edinburgh
from naomi (50%) on October 20th, 2007 (1 year ago)
If you like Thai then this place is delicious! The only thing that let it down last time we were here was the slight lack of service, so much so that a table of 7 or so got up and left but I am sure that's just because it was sooo busy. The decor is perfect (I have been to Thai before where they try and mix it with this whole minimalist look, not sure what that's all about). The menu is extensive to say the least - I think there were over 30 pages. It can be a little difficult then to choose and it would be good to see the staff paying attention to this fact and perhaps making some recommendations. Be warned though, that if you go for spicey it's VERY spicey, which I love but I am sure others will not enjoy. Portions are of good proportion, we had no room left for dessert. A winner every time and not too pricey either. Plus is right next to 99 Hanover Street which is great for drinks before and after your meal.

Chop Chop
248 Morrison St, EH3 8DT, Edinburgh
from naomi (50%) on October 20th, 2007 (1 year ago)
This place is great! Okay, so the decor is not amazing but the prices, food and hospitality are great. I would totally recommend Chop Chop for the work lunch crowd, those with kids (as there's plenty of room) or those just wanting to eat out but not pay a fortune. The key is keeping the food simple and cooking it well. The dumplings are boiled or fried, good portions and taste delicious. You essentially season yourself with your own soy, chilli and/or garlic. Even if you have a drink with your meal the prices are kept down and the staff are always very polite. I have been here a number of times now and would go again for non fussy meal out! I think, weekdays lunch, was about £5-7 each.
