Not cheap but the steak I had was tip top. That and the fact my ma was paying.

Khartoum Cafe

I have walked past this well presented takeaway many times and always wondered what it is like. It serves a selection of wraps and sandwiches with a distinctly North African flavour - falafel, babaganoush etc...

I went here on Saturday with my girlfriend and we had a wrap and a drink each, all for the very reasonable sum of £9. I had Falafel, babaganoush and salad, whilst my girlfriend had chicken and avocado. They both tasted delicious and I will certainly be going back here for lunch sometime soon.

The cafe has four high chairs upon which you can perch and people gaze. It is in a perfect location with a busy road outside and the corner of the links on the other side.

As for the staff, the guy who served us was so friendly. He brought our food over to us and then, part way through the meal, he brought over a piping hot piece of freshly cooked falafel and then proceeded to quiz us on how it tasted (I don't really need to add that it was yummy). A very homely touch in a very relaxed atmosphere, so go here soon and enjoy it alot!

99 Hanover Street

My favourite bar anywhere near George St. A lot of character thanks to it's minimalist decor, moody lighting and 80s cartoons playing on a screen.

It's currently being renovated; meaning it's destined to be another chrome filled, rubbish style bar. I'm putting £10 on that if the bookies take such bets.

San Marco

Best pizza and bruschetta I'd had in a long time. And the portion sizes were good for my deceptively small stomach.

The Apartment

7-13 Barclay Place, EH10 4HW, Edinburgh

4 from jcaughey (73%) on October 15th, 2007 (1 year ago)

I was taken here for valentines day and it was great. I had the king prawns jumbo skewer which was YUM (I did manage to ping one across the room when trying to remove it from its skewer - quite embarrassing, luckily no-one noticed, bit of a waste of a jumbo king prawn though!)

Anyway, the staff were great and I loved the laid back atmosphere the Apartment promotes. Quite on the pricy side and unfortunately our table was in a bit of a corridor which wasn't the most romantic of places to be sat but it was obviously a very busy night and the quality of food and service made up for it.

Would recommend to book!

Songkran

24a Stafford Street, EH3 7BD, Edinburgh

4 from jcaughey (73%) on October 15th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Small, personal, excellent food.

Not sure about price because all the times I have been there have been paid for by work!

I LOVE Thai food, Songkran is very authentic and the flowers carved out of carrots are beautiful (I always feel bad eating them!).

There a few really spicy dishes on the menu so be warned...

Service is really good, food can take a wee while to come but everytime I have been there it has been full so I would seriously advise that you book. The 2nd best Thai restaurant in Edinburgh.

Petit Paris

yum yum yum

Went to le Petit Paris for a 'girls' work lunch and it was fantastique! The staff were great and the ambiance was lovely.

The specials on the menu were varied and tres french.

The Kir was scrummy and the service superb.

Really really enjoyed this meal. I haven't been to the one in the Grassmarket before but have heard nothing but good things about it.

Would seriously recommend le Petit Paris - top notch!

This restaurant is my local and it's great!

It is quite new and I went with a friend a couple of weeks ago. It has an interesting interior of purple and green but do not let this put you off: the staff are really friendly and it has a great atmosphere.

I had fajitas and they were delicious. There was a great varied selection of Mexican food on the menu. I will definitely return and I highly recommend this restaurant to all.

Chocolate Soup

2 Hunter Square, EH1 1QW, Edinburgh

4 from eveybaby (32%) on October 15th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Chocolate soup is excellent!! Yes, it might be quite expensive, but no more expensive than the likes of Starbucks/Costa and other coffee houses. The thing that makes chocolate soup stand out is that it's a bit different, doesn't try too hard and the staff are always friendly and attentive (unlike the aforementioned coffee houses that do nothing but churn out skinny lattes day after day). Chocolate soup has character and a great view out onto the Royal Mile!!! It definitely worth a visit for one of their GIANT bowls of hot chocolate!!!

Bell's Diner

7 St Stephen Street, EH3 5AN, Edinburgh

4 from vegasmonkey (36%) on October 15th, 2007 (1 year ago)

I went here for dinner during the week, managed to get a table no problems at half 8 just walking in. Bell's is a small place but this makes for a cosy atmosphere. The menu is simple, I had a burger, my bro had a steak. Both were fine but not exceptional. The large helpings meant that we didn't get on to the deserts but they looked good judging by other people's orders. Would have given 3 for this place if it was not for the friendly waitress and cool tunes.
