Went here to catch up with a friend and had intended to just stay for a drink. But it's such a nice little place that we stayed to eat. I had a duck dish with crushed potatoes and stuff. Very nice.

The cakes and dessserts are on display and look too good to refuse. I had banoffee pie which didn't disappoint. We ended up spending over 3 hours there but never felt like they wanted to us to leave to free up the table.

Apparently there's live jazz on one night of the week too if you like that kind of thing.

Calistoga

Although this restaurant doesn't look great from the outside it serves up some good dishes at really reasonable prices. We went with the special offer of soup, a steak, sauce and a side order for £14 (only offered Sunday-Wednesday). The soup choices were tasty (and moved away from conventional combinations) and the steak and side provided a good main course. It wasn't the biggest steak ever but with such a good deal you can't complain. The owner was friendly and provided very attentive service. There was an extensive wine list - the restaurant is run in conjunction with the independent wine retailer next door. Aside from the offer there were plenty other tasty sounding dishes on the menu which hopefully I'll be back to try.

Charming little restaurant above a good pub. Straight forward unpretentious food, friendly service and fantastic value if you go early and take advantage of their pre-theatre menu.

Bennet's Bar

8 Leven Street, EH3 9LG, Edinburgh

4 from jwjlewis (75%) on July 21st, 2007 (1 year ago)

A proper pub, this place has a good old fashioned feel - wooden panelling, leather seats etc... It has locals in it and so you know it must be good. As i'm not a beer drinker I cannot comment on the beverages on offer - except to say that they don't have Addleston's Cloudy Cider, which they should get! It has a dining area out the back which is a brighter room.

This place is great for a quick pre- or post- theatre drink (it is right next to the King's Theatre), or to sit in the corner all evening with an old friend and catch up.

Ecco Vino

19 Cockburn Street, EH1 1BP, Edinburgh

Great half way meeting place if you work in Marchmont and have friends that work in New Town and commute from Waverley. You can either just have drinks or eat as well. Very good selection of salads and pasta dishes. Only down side food served in trendy bowls that are fine for pasta but difficult for salad, as I discovered last time!

Peacock Inn

100 Lindsay Road, EH6 4TZ, Edinburgh

A gem of a pub. This is place is lovely, the staff were very friendly, but in no way overburdening. They do a monster portion of fish and chips, which is definitely only for real men! I very much recommend that you visit this place.

Clever Dick's

119 High Street, EH1 1SG, Edinburgh

From the outside, this appears to be your normal pub, inside though, it is delightful. Great décor - how a traditional pub should look. Hopefully it won't turn into an uber-chic minimalist hole any time soon. I would strongly recommend this pub as a great place for a pint.

The Apartment

7-13 Barclay Place, EH10 4HW, Edinburgh

A few years ago now, but I remember this resturant to be very relaxed, comfy and good food. Can't remember any other resturants really so this one must have stood out for some reason. I managed to order something from the menu so can't backup jwjlewis' experience.

Empires

Empires is fun and the food is varied and authentic. The atmosphere is comfortable and relaxed - a great place to go with a few friends to enjoy sampling new foods as you can easily share a selection of different things. Service is always very friendly, if not always very speedy.

The Waterline

The Shore, EH6 6RD, Edinburgh

4 from Dougie (16%) on July 18th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Excellent place for a relaxing lunch the day after a big night out - comfy sofas, relaxed atmosphere and good quality pub food. Also has plenty of tables out the front overlooking the Shore - ideal for an after work pint on a sunny day. Get on board.
