Bonsai

Bonsai is one of my favourite restaurants in the city and I eat there on average once a month. The layout itself is compact but pleasant and the food is traditionally Japanese with a twist. The staff are very friendly and are more than willing to explain exactly what's in a particular dish on the menu or recommend another dish which you might enjoy. The menu itself is extensive and has a mix-and-match tapas feel to it with lots of small, tasty offerings. The ika geso (melt in your mouth battered squid with lemon and sea salt) and agenazu (fanned aubergine with a hot chilli miso dressing) in particular are worthy of a mention. The sashimi is fresh, the sushi is firm and the rice is cooked to perfection. I don't think I've ever had a bad meal here in the three years I've been going and the place is always spotless.

The only reason I have marked it down slightly is that I have noticed a difference in the speed of the service lately. The last time I was there with a larger party it took almost three hours for the meal to be served and dishes were forgotten. But that's one bad experience in over 40 outings!

This restaurant is new - it used to be Monster Mash. As I used to live above Iris, I have been wanting to try this place out ever since it opened.

I went here for a business lunch today and was not disappointed. Decor is minimalist and funky. More importantly, the food was the best I have had in the city centre area for a long time. For a starter I had pea soup - possibly the best pea soup I have had. For a main I had chicken which was cooked perfectly and had an extremely delicious, creamy sauce. My dining partners had the butternut squash lasagne which had very positive comments also. The portions were all extremely generous and, as tempting as the deserts appeared to be, I was too full to eat anything else. Prices were also reasonable with two courses for just over a tenner each.

The only letdown was the service. The waitress was a bit slow and not very knowledgable. A couple of questions were asked regarding some of the main courses but she either just shrugged her shoulders or said "I guess so" - quite unprofessional.

However, I would recommed this restaurant as the food was fantastic and will definitely return at some point to try out their dinner menu.

Giuliano's

18-19 Union Place, EH1 3NQ, Edinburgh

Went here for a business lunch and had a great meal. Their menu is vast with everything from salads, pasta, pizza, steaks, seafood you name it they have most of it. The staff were very friendly and even cooked one of our party a pizza that wasnt on the menu.

Prices for pizzas range from £8-£13 and looked good. I had a mediterranean salad with chicken, roasted peppers and goats cheese which was very good and freshly cooked chicken breasts.

As with the other reviewer the puddings were very good! Wasn't going to have one but got tempted and was just as well I did.

All Bar One

Exchange Plaza, EH3 9BY, Edinburgh

Went here for father's day today and had a lovely meal and excellent service. 18yr old had the beef and coriander burger which he thought was great and we had a selection of the tapas which were very nice indeed. Both male waiters were friendly, helpful and efficient. We all enjoyed ourselves very much and would certainly come back.

No. 1 Chinese

Best Chinese I've had anywhere for a while, and definitely the best in Edinburgh. Quick service and the sweet and sour chicken is a favourite.

The Cambridge Bar

20 Young Street, EH2 4JB, Edinburgh

What can I say about this place that hasn't been said before?

It's a pub, gots them a telly, burgers *slightly* cheaper than GBK just a stone's throw away. From good ol' classic beef, chicken and bean burgers from £5.95 to wallet-bustin' 7.50/7.95 Chicken Camembert (my fave), Portabella 'Shroom, and BBQ Bacon, the food is great, the atmosphere jovial and the drinks are flowin'.

My only beef with the place is the size of it. It's a regular watering hole for many after hours businesses, so obviously post-work hours on Fridays are one to avoid as it can get pretty busy and cramped, but for quality quickie pub food, the Cambridge comes highly recommended.

Got the urge? Come to the Camburgeidge.

A small place with simple decor, but the food and service is consistently excellent. (And they do an excellent takeaway!)

Peter's Yard

27 Simpsons Loan, EH3 9GG, Edinburgh

4 from Bryan (57%) on June 9th, 2008 (4 weeks ago)

Here for brunch yesterday.

Me - Rocket & pesto Foccacia, 2 cups of coffee, 1 freshly squeezed orange juice.

Partner - Breakfast platter (bread and conserves), 1 cup of coffee, 1 freshly squeezed orange juice.

Total bill around £16-17.

My sandwich was really nice once I got over the £3.80 price; partners Breakfast platter was REALLY good - excellent bread and spectacular marmalade.

Coffee was very nice and (happily) very hot (not always the case I find).

Orange juice was good but nothing that would justify £2.50 a glass.

OK, it's not the City Caff and it's all a bit healthy and wholesome and beardy. And yes, it is full of smug parents with their doubtless "much more intelligent than normal for their age" babies but, once in a while, I'd go again.

King's Wark

Very friendly wee pub, totally unpretentious and with excellent food, how pub eating ought to be. My lanb was awesome, and I can vouch for the Cod and the smoked haddock.

Very friendly staff were happy to accomodate our unusual timing, we ate as soon as the kitchen opened then legged it to a show and returned for puddings and coffee later, not sure that would be encouraged in all their customers but our request was greeted with a genuine smile.

only complaints were a couple of sub-standard puddings.

Go there for good food in a relaxed setting.

Daniel's Bistro

88 Commercial Street, EH6 6LX, Edinburgh

4 from MkeBR (10%) on June 9th, 2008 (4 weeks ago)

This was our second visit to Daniels our fist being on a very busy Saturday night and found the food & service great. This visit a quiet sunny evening in June was even better. We had a starter to share which was like a thin pizza with onion & cheese and was just right to get the taste buds going. For main courses, Barbary Duck in a wild berry sauce was delicious and perfectly cooked, Chicken in wild mushrooms was just scrummy, and beef in a blue cheese sauce had me drooling before I had taken a bite - the aroma was so good and so well cooked the steak knife was un-necessary. For sweets we had lemon cheese cake which was excellent, but the Terrine of Chocolate was to die for. 70% cocoa with an orange sauce, my fellow diners resorted to sticking the fingers in and licking them because I was keeping this caviar of sweets to myself. This along with 4 spitits & mixers, 6 beers of various nationalitys & a bottle of red wine £125 for 4. Great value, fantastic food (if we hadn't thought we might cause offence we would have all licked the plates) and wonderful service.
