RELAXED DINING WITH JAZZ ACCOMPANIMENT
This restaurant/bar is a great find on the corner of Queen Street and Charlotte Square, just far enough away from George Street to attract locals rather than the tourist crowd. The atmosphere is relaxed with the dinning section centred around enclosed booths, which make it more private. There is often jazz on in the evenings with the bar staying open till late.
I have been several times now both for lunch and dinner and I have never had a disappointing meal. The menu is not huge but varied enough for most diners (including my very picky Mother who was on a diet at the time of visiting) and consists of English and Scottish fare. I would particularly recommend their fish and chips which are served with minted peas and pancetta. The average cost of a main is between around £9 - £16, with starters and desserts around £5 - they appear to serve the same menu for both lunch and dinner so if you want a small bar snack then this place probably isn't for you.
The service is friendly and while it is restaurant you would be equally comfortable just having a drink at the bar. However, if you want to eat at the weekend I would recommend booking, as the booths get booked up early.
My one gripe is that there appears to be only one ladies loo upstairs, which yes is clean and pleasant but that is of little comfort when you are in a queue!
Overall, I would definitely recommend Eighty Queen Street as somewhere that offers consistently good food at a reasonable price in warm and welcoming surroundings.

I've been here for lunch at least 3 times now and it's been excellent fare each time. Not as expensive as I expected either. Brought clients here also and they've always been chuffed with the grub, the service and the atmosphere. It's necessary to book on busy pay-days for example but I'll go frequently.
The food is pretty straightforward in terms of selection, some inventive risottos, pasta, steaks and so on. Top starters, when I went recently all 4 of the ones we selected looked good. The mains were decent sized and we were all pretty full when we finished up.
The service is of a high standard and efficient.
All in all I'll go again, a bit more expensive than Ricks and harder to get a table but a nice spot for a treat.

CHARMINGLY OLD FASHIONED & REASSURINGLY EXPENSIVE
After hearing many good things about this restaurant my partner took me here earlier in the year for our anniversary - we were not disapointed.
The restaurant is hidden away on Thistle Street and is full of old fashioned charm. It is split on two levels which makes for a cosier and private atmosphere. Although full it did not seem over crowded. The cliental as far as I could tell were all quite well to do and we seemed to be some of the youngest diners there (we are in our late twenties). However, don't let this put you off the food was lovely and the service friendly and efficient.
The menu though not extensive was well thought out and obviously heavily based around seasonal fish. The food was fresh, of good quality and definitely all home made - even the dessert, which is sadly often a rarity these days.
Yes, it is expensive but I think certainly worth it for a treat or special occasion. It cost us just under £90 for two: one starter, two mains, two desserts, one lager, one bottle of wine (mid-price) and a bottle of water. While I wouldn't eat here regularly (our budget doesn't stretch that far!) I would certainly recommend it for a special occasion or meal out with older relatives - you know whatever you get is going to be good - and you know you aren't going to be bothered by noisy co-diners.
I would definitely recommend Fishers, although make sure you reserve in advance as it gets booked up early.

The Cambridge Bar

I have to pre-empt this review by revealing that I love a good burger and so naturally I will be biased! The Cambridge is a great pub with a wide selection of burgers - I have tried several varieties and I can honestly say that in general they are all delicious, whether it be a beef, chicken or vegetarian bean burger.
The staff are friendly and the atmosphere relaxed, my only gripe is that they are often a little slow in cleaning the tables, which would be fine except the burgers are so full of delicious but often sloppy extras that the tables do become a little sticky!
Because the food is so reasonably priced (around £6 for a burger) and because they show sport on the T.V. it does become quite busy and the tables are often taken, especially during weekend afternoons. I am a little confused by digitalspaghetti's review as I don't think that there is an outside area to sit in good weather nor I have I ever seen anything but burgers available - are they talking about the same place?
The only other point I should mention is one that I noticed at the weekend: It occurred to me that while they have a disabled toilet, I think (and I may be wrong here, as presumably they have tested these things) that the door actually looks too narrow to fit a wheelchair through, also this toilet is at the back of the pub, which means that you either have to negotiate up some stairs from the bar area or enter through the back and negotiate down them to get to the bar. However, although I thought I should highlight this, this is just my interpretation and I am willingly to be corrected by someone who is better informed.
I will definitely be returning.

Caffe Sardi

We've been going to Sardi's for many years. Friendly, family run restaurant at reasonable prices. Food is always very good and we've never had a bad meal. Don't know what the previous two contributors were moaning about. Our regular Hogmany haunt.

I'd also highly recommend the fry up - slightly on the expensive side for the portions but well worth it! Good atmosphere, plenty of staff. You might have to wait a while for a table during peek times but there's enough there that one comes up soon enough. Didn't try the cakes but they looked good!

Great pub with a great atmosphere. A nice outside area to sit if the weather is warm, and a great selection of real ales. The burgers are to die for, and real chips too! Also very good freshly made sandwiches at good prices.

Very compact place if you eat inside, but luckily this place has a terrace overlooking the Grassmarket that's rather nice. Good food, not too pricey and good service.

Jimmy Chung's

from digitalspaghetti (23%) on August 22nd, 2007 (1 year ago)
When you dine here - expect it to be VERY busy! Since this place opened, I have never seen it less than half full, even on a lunch menu. This means the buffet is always hot and fresh - and the quality for the food is also very nice.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Edinburgh. The service is great, the decor is eye pleasing and the menu has lots of nice choices. They have your normal choices from Jalapeño Peppers to Fajitas, but have some interesting choices on the menu such as Chicken and Chocolate.
Their choice of cocktails is also very nice - best Margarita I've tasted in Edinburgh!
