Cafe Grande

For a friendly cafe with pavement seating in the summer, this place is hard to beat. Like the other review, a good place for a hangover fry up, or for a catch up with an old friend over a nice mug of hot chocolate.

Lovely food, reasonably priced from what I can remember and very friendly staff. So friendly in fact that when we left they gave us each a bottle of Stella to take home with us. So I would say this is a go out of your way kind of restaurant, even just for the service.

Nargile

Great food, very friendly staff. When one of my party just wanted to peck at other people's food instead of ordering anything for herself, the waiter brought over a plate for her. Some restaurants would make you feel uncomfortable doing that, but not here. You feel like you are welcomed in with open arms.

Great selection of burgers (loads of other food too) in this trendy new bar on Chambers Street (used to be Beluga). I had the Big Chilli Burger which was £7.45 and very tasty. I was really hungry so agreed to "double it up" for an extra pound. They forgot to but didn't charge me and there was loads of food as it was.
After you order they put an egg timer on your table - if the sands run out before your food arrives you eat for free. A novel idea which pretty much guarantees you won't be waiting forever for your food.

Double Dutch

Very friendly staff, pleasant atmosphere and I am reliably informed, the best eggs benedict in Edinburgh. Where better to spend a Sunday afternoon, but outside on the pavement seating with a Magners and burger. Mmmm...

Tasty Italian food and they do takeaway and delivery. A nice pasta dish makes a great change from the usual pizza, fish and chips, Chinese or Indian takeaway.

I am on the look out for the perfect hang over fry up. This comes close - good portion - Newspapers - orange juice and coffee thrown in.

Villager
49-50 George IV Bridge, EH1 1EJ, Edinburgh

from rachybaby (85%) on July 5th, 2007 (1 year ago)
I think Mr Davidson's review is slightly unfair! Although they may operate a ridiculous door policy (being a girl I have never experienced those particular problems) I think Villager is a great restaurant/bar to visit. The staff are friendly and it has an atmospheric and unique interior. Furthermore, they have just got a new food and cocktail menu which I think is great. I highly recommend their mushroom risotto and venison burger.
