Peter's Yard
27 Simpsons Loan, EH3 9GG, Edinburgh
from Bryan (56%) on June 9th, 2008 (1 month ago)
Here for brunch yesterday.
Me - Rocket & pesto Foccacia, 2 cups of coffee, 1 freshly squeezed orange juice.
Partner - Breakfast platter (bread and conserves), 1 cup of coffee, 1 freshly squeezed orange juice.
Total bill around £16-17.
My sandwich was really nice once I got over the £3.80 price; partners Breakfast platter was REALLY good - excellent bread and spectacular marmalade.
Coffee was very nice and (happily) very hot (not always the case I find).
Orange juice was good but nothing that would justify £2.50 a glass.
OK, it's not the City Caff and it's all a bit healthy and wholesome and beardy. And yes, it is full of smug parents with their doubtless "much more intelligent than normal for their age" babies but, once in a while, I'd go again.

Very friendly wee pub, totally unpretentious and with excellent food, how pub eating ought to be. My lanb was awesome, and I can vouch for the Cod and the smoked haddock.
Very friendly staff were happy to accomodate our unusual timing, we ate as soon as the kitchen opened then legged it to a show and returned for puddings and coffee later, not sure that would be encouraged in all their customers but our request was greeted with a genuine smile.
only complaints were a couple of sub-standard puddings.
Go there for good food in a relaxed setting.

Daniel's Bistro
88 Commercial Street, EH6 6LX, Edinburgh
from MkeBR (10%) on June 9th, 2008 (1 month ago)
This was our second visit to Daniels our fist being on a very busy Saturday night and found the food & service great. This visit a quiet sunny evening in June was even better. We had a starter to share which was like a thin pizza with onion & cheese and was just right to get the taste buds going. For main courses, Barbary Duck in a wild berry sauce was delicious and perfectly cooked, Chicken in wild mushrooms was just scrummy, and beef in a blue cheese sauce had me drooling before I had taken a bite - the aroma was so good and so well cooked the steak knife was un-necessary. For sweets we had lemon cheese cake which was excellent, but the Terrine of Chocolate was to die for. 70% cocoa with an orange sauce, my fellow diners resorted to sticking the fingers in and licking them because I was keeping this caviar of sweets to myself. This along with 4 spitits & mixers, 6 beers of various nationalitys & a bottle of red wine £125 for 4. Great value, fantastic food (if we hadn't thought we might cause offence we would have all licked the plates) and wonderful service.

This is the best Indian restuarant in Edinburgh, I think. We travel over from the US and whenever we are in Edinburgh we make a point of eating there... ask staff for recommendations and they will suggest some great dishes... we have tried things we haven't eaten anywhere else!

Sonar Gao Takeaway

I live halfway Leith Walk and as a great fan of Indian food, I'm always looking for a good take-away place. My usual choise is HAQ's (used to be known as Rice n Spice) and there's nothing wrong with HAQ's, but I just wanted to try out something different. So, Sonar Gao Takeaway it was. Reasonable prices and a good home delivery. I was told it would take at least 40 minutes to deliver, but after 35 minutes the delivery man was there. I had North Indian garlic chicken whihc was very tasteful. Not too hot, just good enough. My partner being vegetarian always enjoys Indian food, and she ordered something new to her which was a vegetable curry with banana which went down really well! Only weird thing was that we got pickles and dips with our order (we never asked for those), but no poppadoms! So that was a bit of a waste. I would order there again next time.

Went here last week and had great food. If you're looking for plush surroundings etc then this isn't the place to come. You come here for the grub and the friendly service.
I can't really comment on how nepalese the food is but I'll comment on what it was like.
It's a small restaurant and can feel a bit cramped. We thought we'd come along on a really quiet night as we were the only people there at 8 on a Thursday night but no, everyone just came later! The waiters are very friendly, helpful and awfully polite.
I like mild curries (sorry) so I went for the number 51 which is some type of korma with honey and almond. I had the lamb version which was absolutely delicious. They had put cumin seeds in it which really gave it a beautiful taste. It wasn't the creamy, yellowy white stuff of so many other curry houses.
The rest of the guys were massively impressed with their food and we all left feeling stuffed and happy.

Pretty good, large portions. Alas they have 'relocated', but to where?

City Cafe
19 Blair Street, EH1 1QR, Edinburgh
from Bryan (56%) on May 18th, 2008 (2 months ago)
Long a fan of the city cafe for its wonderful breakfasts, burgers and nachos, I was initially disturbed to hear it had come under new management; I needn't have worried.
Sunday breakfast today - 2 sausages, 2 bacon, 2 eggs, haggis, tattie scone, hash brown, beans (in a separate pot - nice touch) and toast for £6.95.
Quantity great, quality good (bacon could have been a little less salty). So not quite as good overall as the previous City Cafe breakfast but very good nonetheless.
There were also some improvements: the coffee was exceptional, the service very friendly (if possibly too quick) and they've stopped the old method of wrapping the cutlery in a napkin which is then wetted in the corner so it holds together - I always hated that.
So altogether very good; my only concern is whether they still sell burgers and nachos at Sunday brunch as the menu was brunch-specific and they weren't apparent.
Also still a "groovy" venue which to me belongs in black and white and the spirit of the 50s/60s.
