The Apartment

7-13 Barclay Place, EH10 4HW, Edinburgh

4 from crstevenson (16%) on September 14th, 2008 (2 months ago)

Trying to find an alternative to the usual Bruntsfield Sunday brunch venues, The Apartment was recommended to me as having a good selection of well-priced alternatives to the standard Sunday brunch fare. Having been on several occasions for dinner and knowing how good the food is from the evening menu it came as no suprise that the Sunday brunch menu (served 12-5) was no exception.

Staff were very willing to assist with the choice from the brunch menu. For larger parties, only the a la carte menu is available but the selection (if not the prices) were equally appealing.

Our party of 6 had a selection from the brunch menu of deliciously succulent steak sandwiches, moules frites and the more unusal gnocchi with crayfish tails and chorizo. All fantastic and at a fantastic price about £7 for a dish. The perfect dessert menu did not go unnoticed including passion fruit ceme brulee, chocolate brownie with raspberry shortcake ice cream and a selection of homemade ice cream.

Sundays in Bruntsfield just got better.

Tempting Tattie

18 Jeffrey Street, EH1 1DT, Edinburgh

4 from JoeyPike (24%) on September 13th, 2008 (2 months ago)

If you're anywhere around Jeffrey Street and fancy a filling, tasty, value for money baked tattie, this is your place.

You'll get decent sized potatoes (I've never gone bigger than a medium, it's plenty big) loaded with toppings from a huge range of hot and cold.

There's even a couple of stools to take the weight off your feet if you're having a busy day.

I reckon the medium with haggis is the pick of the bunch, the haggis having just the right amount of neeps through it!

Thoroughly recommended.

I like fish and chips.

I like fish and chips way too much for my own good.

Having spent 10 years in London where the fish and chips staple is cod (sacrilege!) and if you can get a haddock it's skinny and grey, one of the things my mrs and I were most looking forward to on our return to Scotland was a decent fish supper (not cod and chips "twice" - TWO FISH SUPPERS!!).

Lucky for us, Javits is not far away.

I almost had a tear in my eye on the first visit at the sight of proper fish and true delights like white, red and black puddings, two types of haggis and some battered sausages, the king rib had me drooling, it was almost a religious experience.

Every visit since, the chips have always been fresh and hot, the portions generous and the miscellany of deep fried, non fishy goodies I've tried have all been exactly what I wanted and tasted great. A couple of times, the fish hasn't perhaps been as fresh as I would like but that's the exception rather than the rule.

The fish servings are particularly generous and a supper consists of one large or two small haddock and all for a fiver. (In my pursuit of decent fish and chips in London, I've paid over £9 for a "jumbo" haddock and chips takeaway and they never got close to the quality of Javits.)

As has already been pointed out, the counters are always clean and the staff are well turned out and friendly.

So great stuff all round but c'mon Edinburgh, what's the deal with salt and sauce??? Bleurch..!

Mermaid Fish Bar

43-45 Leith Walk, EH6 8LS, Edinburgh

4 from idl34 (9%) on September 11th, 2008 (2 months ago)

Having tried all the chip shops on Leith Walk, this one is by far the best. The chips are not greasy or over-cooked, they are just right. The only down side for me was the pies are deep fried and they are slightly greasy, but I can definitely recommend the fish, of which there is a superb choice too. Well worth a try!

The Wally Dug

32 Northumberland St, EH3 6LS, Edinburgh

4 from Bryan (65%) on September 11th, 2008 (2 months ago)

Terrific pub!

Used to have the worst toilets in Europe but have recently fixed them so they don't smell anymore.

Good Real Ales usually IPA, & two guest ales plus Best and the usual lagers (local and continental).

Great staff, Wii in the back, no Sky sports, terrific local drinkers - always an amusing time to be had with friendly chatty people.

Food? Um, they do a mean cheese & ham toastie and that's it.

Pani Solinska

73 Broughton Street, EH1 3RJ, Edinburgh

4 from Bryan (65%) on September 11th, 2008 (2 months ago)

Lovely takeaway sandwiches with Polish meat and delicious bread. I also like to buy some Polish chocolate which rocks too.

2 x rolls, a drink and chocolate bar usually comes to about £6.90.

Service is always with a smile and the whole place has a lovely atmosphere about it.

Much better than the Globe for a Broughton Street roll in my opinion.

We always come here for the fresh brewed beer and traditional walk we do down the almond river to see our sail boats and scenery. The traditional meals are superb and your staff go out of their way with service with such inviting smiles. Thank you. Jack and Pam

The Regent

2 Montrose Terrace, EH7 5DL, Edinburgh

4 from nettles (94%) on September 10th, 2008 (2 months ago)

Fantastic little pub I have been meaning to go to for a while and am certainly glad I did. Really nice decor slightly on the quirky side this place has a respectful selection of brews and wine and I am sure spirits to boot as well as a cheap and wholesome menu which of course I wanted to try out.

I opted for one of the guest ciders they had on that day, don't recall the name at this time but this probably has more to do with the fact that it was one of those high alcohol ciders than me not liking it. They also have a range of wines to choose from. My friend ordered a red and had the choice of three. I should also mention that when I ordered the cider I was asked if I would like to try it before I ordered which I thought was very nice indeed!

The menu looks almost idential as to what you might find in other pubs serving food - lasagna (meat and veggie) nachos also meat and veggie, mac and cheese, sandwiches, bagels, curry, stews, soups, etc. A nice range and also included were a few specials. I had the meat lasagna and my friend ordered the mac and cheese. We were both more than satisfied with the quality of the food and at under 6 quid a meal it was a bargain for sure. No complaints on the mac and cheese and from my seat it looked tasty.

I should mention that the Regent won some award for the best gay pub in edinburgh, I am not sure the year or what award, but this is not a music blasting night spot, at least during supper hours. A really nice relaxing feel with friendly staff and good decent food. I will definitely go back there. I wonder if they do brunch?

Mezbaan South Indian Restaurant

14 -14A Brougham Street, EH3 9JH, Edinburgh

4 from smurfberry (36%) on September 8th, 2008 (2 months ago)

I have tried Mezbaan a couple of times since reading a review in the Independent and can recommend the vegetarian South Indian specialities in particular - Masala Dosa and Idli. I have never had either before so cannot comment on how 'authentic' they are, but both were delicious. The lamb curries are good too (have tried Gosht Khaas Bemisal Chaman and Andhra lamb). Pilau rice was good too and the free poppadom they included with the takeaway was superb, light as a feather and just melted in your mouth. The only disappointment was the nan bread - too many blackened and burn bits! (Guess they left it in a few seconds too long). Eat in with BYOB (£2 corkage) or takeaway (online ordering available). Friendly service. Recommended and a step-up in quality from the usual Indian restaurant fare.
