David Bann

My favourite restaurant in Edinburgh without a doubt (and I've had the tofu and noodles too!). I'm a veggie and have eaten at most of the veggie restaurants in Edinburgh, but this takes the biscuit. The staff are lovely, and they can give you good info on all the dishes, because they eat them too. Heaven! :)

Suruchi

14a Nicholson Street, EH8 9DH, Edinburgh

I must say as an Indian just moved to Edinburgh I have tried every so called Indian restaurant. I don't understand balti (balti means a bucket in India!!!) or any such colonial nonsense that is served in Indian restaurants. Suruchi was great - their starters and sauces were great their vegetarian main courses superb. Can't complain. That is where I go when I am home sick.

No. 1 Sushi Bar

37 Home Street, EH3 9JP, Edinburgh

5 from sl992l (14%) on February 12th, 2008 (9 months ago)

I can't disagree more with the previous reviewer. Who knows if the staff are Chinese or Japanese… does it really matter though? I guess British people should only have restaurants with British food too. They would be popular! Overall I found the restaurant extremely warm, friendly and genuinely homely. The staff were fabulously friendly and the food was amazing. Great value for money too. I’ve had sushi in Australia, HK, NYC and loads of places in Europe and I thought this was pretty much as good as any. I’ve been a few times now and as long as the place doesn’t change I will be a regular for a long time to come!

Tex Mex II

64 Thistle Street, EH2 1EN, Edinburgh

5 from Jake (17%) on February 5th, 2008 (9 months ago)

I gave it five stars because it reminded me of home. Have been living in Edinburgh for four years and this is the only mexican left that I love. The Yacht Club on Hanover Street was the other but sadly it is closed as the owner has died.

Abstract

33-35 Castle Terrace, EH1 2EL, Edinburgh

My husband and I had a fantastic night here, the whole experience was one of attentive luxury from start to finish. The interior is quite decadent as is the food - whether you choose the a la carte or the taster menu you will not be disappointed. The portions are not huge but instead they aim to satisfy with their imaginative combinatons and moreishly rich flavours. The taster menu took me to places I have never been - from the addictive salt cod samosa's to the confit of chicken and the snail bob-bons (weird but delicious). Everything looked like a work of art and was a pleasure to eat. The service is much less pretentious than one might expect - though some of the staff are more formal than others they do aim to please and are simply taking their jobs seriously. The wine menu runs well from end to end - with a good spread of middle to low end prices. The evening here was one of the highlights of our trip and I would encourage anyone to give it a go. Our bill came to £140 - for a taster menu, an a la carte, wine apperitifs and digestifs - the El Buli of the north.

New Garden Grove Chinese Takeaway

A great chinese takeaway. I have been eating from "Stevie's" great wok for many a year and despite moving to the other side of Edinburgh I still make the effort to drive over to this Chinese takeaway.

Zucca

Lyceum Theatre, EH3 9AX, Edinburgh

5 from Jo (17%) on January 7th, 2008 (10 months ago)

We ate here on New Year's Eve - it was a great experience!

Both the quality of ingredients & recipes were very good, in fact the starter & main were so good we all had dessert even though we were really full!

We were enjoying it so much we even ordered a second bottle of wine to prolong the experience.

Highly recommended, excellent food & wine, attentive service & great value for money.
