Clay Oven

Great service, very attentive but never intrusive.

I have been countless times over the years and have never had a bad experience. Food is always great and the portions are really generous.

You never feel hurried and have the opportunity to enjoy your meal, relax a little and then be tempted by the yummy desserts.

Prix fixe lunchtime menu is a delight and the price is great too. Beautiful reastaurant in a great little corner of Leith.

Hotel is fab for a high-end city break.

Domenico's

30 Sandport Street, EH6 6EP, Edinburgh

5 from kurlybap (19%) on November 7th, 2007 (1 year ago)

I used to work across the road from here and the lunchtime menu was sometimes the only thing that got me through the week!

Great pasta dishes (huge portions) and soups as well as fresh tasty sandwiches to take away or eat in.

Evenings are intimate and with the food so tasty, Domenico's always delivers a first class experience.

Number One

Balmoral Hotel, EH2 2EQ, Edinburgh

5 from Rawlie (60%) on October 19th, 2007 (1 year ago)

This place is so famous but noone I know has ever gone, including me, until last night that is.

The decor is quite flash but also feels a little bit 70's with laquered walls in red and black but there is also something ubercool about that!

We chose our starter and main at the small bar as you enter where we had a lovely gin and tonic and were presented with some little amuse bouches which were absolutely delicious. We chose our wine for dinner with the help of the excellent somellier who was a delight to talk too and massively knowledgable - it was also nice to see a woman doing this job and doing it so well.

The highlight of this place is the food - it was excellent. I had foie gras to start with which was beautifully presented, was interestingly accompanied and it tasted magic. The main course (I had grouse) was similarly presented and equally as tasty. Desserts were lovely - rather than one big lump of stuff you were given small, rich and delicious treats - banana creme brulee, dense chocolate brownie and banana yogurt ice cream which was so smooth. The service was discreet and prompt and very, very polite without being distant, aloof or overly friendly. These people are obviously professionally trained.

It is expensive (we paid £57 a head for 3 courses not including wine) but then again you are definitely getting what you pay for and for a romantic dinner, special occaision and just a deliciously indulgent splurge then it's a great place to go. It's a michelin star and it's fab.

The Kitchin

78 Commercial Quay, EH6 6LX, Edinburgh

5 from Rawlie (60%) on October 19th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Great place with excellent nosh. Very seasonal, fresh and well presented. The bellowing waiter was a bit offputting but to be honest you don't really care when you're about to stuff your face with top quality grub.

Nice, relaxed atmosphere too.

Altogether a brilliant addition to the Edinburgh eating scene. Fab food without stuffy/poncey-ness!

The Kitchin

78 Commercial Quay, EH6 6LX, Edinburgh

5 from martin (14%) on October 15th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Quite rightly ranked as the one of the most adept and innovative new restaurants in Edinburgh, breathing life into a high end market that can at times be staid and a bit sober. The buzz will only increase now that he has his first Michelin star.

The restaurant has a pleasant and bright ante-room with a bar. You are then led into the dining room itself which is predominatly grey with little natural light but not in a way that becomes oppressive at lunch time. The atmosphere is relaxed and you don't feel obliged to whisper to your fellow diners. There is a viewing panel into the kitchen itself where you can watch a self-assured team moving purposefully, free from the usual drama you're lead to believe occurs at the height of service in most restaurants.

The food itself is superb; scottish ingredients with french influences, never fussy nor elaborate for the sake of it. The asparugus starter was simple but delicious and the lamb was perfectly cooked.

All courses were announced by a bellowing frenchman which is pointless but comedy and adds to the "event" feel of dining at such a restaurant. Service itself is, as expected, almost mechanical. At one stage I went to pour some wine for my girlfriend only to spot the sommelier on the other side of the room clock what I was trying to do. He had a look of absolute panic on his face and sprinted across the room before wrestling the bottle from my hand and topping up her glass. Of course it is expensive but the 3 course set lunch for 20 quid is excellent value.

I have since seen Tom Kitchin butcher a pig's head and I long to go back to try his crispy pig's ear salad. The restaurant is a gastronomic delight and no where in Edinburgh can touch it at the moment.

Pret a Manger

51 Hanover Street, EH2 2PJ, Edinburgh

5 from Craig (36%) on October 15th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Ah, good old pret! A bastion of the high quality take away sandwich and perfect for those who only have 5 minutes in which to grab a quick lunch.

As everything is made fresh in each shop the food tends to be much juicier and thus tastier than the M&S alternative. From old favourites such as Crayfish and Rocket to the hangover busting All Day Breakfast there is something to tickle all palates. And if the scales have told you to cut back on the mayo - there are lots of healthy salads to tickle your tastebuds too.

Not a place to sit and linger, the stainless steel and long queues make this place far from relaxing but if you do have time, grab a bite from here and head off to Princes Street Gardens.

Oh, and 'big up' the carrot juice!
