The Olive Branch Bistro

44-46 George IV Bridge, EH1 1EJ, Edinburgh

An absolute treasure! The only negative thing is that it looks a bit dark and boring when you look in at ground level. Now, when you descend the beautifully designed wrought iron stairs, the experience is unmissable! Lots of light from floor to ceiling windows looking onto the Cowgate (I think...).

And the food... gorgeous. Lunch costs £11.95 for 2 courses with a delicious free glass of Champage thrown in. I had Chorizo watercress & fennel salad with orange dressing... 10 out of 10 for taste and presentation. The seared salmon, garlic polenta and shallot dressing is near to the best thing I've ever tasted... My friend's Caesar salad followed by grilled chicken, potato salad with red pepper pesto was also gorgeous. And the waiters are not only Greek gods but couldn't have been more helpful. We were the only diners there; it would have been a different ambience with more diners.

Went in for lunch, food was great, service wasn't far behind, also really good for a few drinks in evening... would suggest you pay them a visit! I've never been disappointed yet, which is rare!

The raison d'être for a restaurant is the quality of the food it serves. For me this is of fundamental importance, while other considerations are secondary. For sure, décor, ambiance, service and the bill are important, but none will redeem poor food; while excellent cuisine will absolve other failings.

For fish of supreme quality, look no further than Dionika, in Edinburgh’s Canonmills. The chef-proprietor, Juan, is an ex-fish trader and he is a zealot for ultra-fresh fish. I ordered sea bass and was greeted with a a specimen of garantuam proportion simply prepared with olive oil and garlic, lightly cooked over a hot grill. Despite its size, the fish was incredibly delicate, and flaked delightfully when touched. The taste was sublime, and I can confidently assert that it was by far the best fish I have eaten in Scotland.

After our meal, Juan joined us to discuss our thoughts on the food and his approach to sourcing the best fish. In the era of the celebrity-chef and corporate restaurants, an artisan interested only in food, who seeks out and listens to his diners is indeed rare and a pleasant surprise. It turns out that our friend, the sea bass, had been swimming happily not 18 hours previous, and the reason for his size was his wild origin, in contrast to smaller farmed varieties.

The décor in Dionika is rustic, and there could have been more service staff, but these are trifling concerns for an establishment where you are sure to get the best fish in Edinburgh. This is an absolute must for any lover of fine food at its best.

Last week I visited the GBK restaurant. I tried garlic mayo burger and after the first bite I felt that it was the best hamburger I have ever had in my life. Service was good - very nice & friendly staff. Good selection of New Zealand beer. Such a nice visit. I will suggest every one to visit & try the juicy burgers.
