A longstanding Edinburgh Indian restaurant, with consistently good food and service. Prices very reasonable. Also serves perhaps the largest naan breads in Edinburgh.

Quite pricey but very nice. I was with a group on a work night and it was yummy. The staff were good but it wasn't especially busy for a friday night so the atmosphere was a bit lacking. The guacamole was excellent (I am a big guacamole fan!) and I had fajitas which is always a safe bet but they were very good. We had a pitcher of sangria which was very good. The meal was quite expensive but I would go again.

Have been a few times - excellent scran!!!
Really recommend for a Stockbridge takeaway. Haven't been disappointed and have had a variety of food. Standard takeaway prices.

Number One
Balmoral Hotel, EH2 2EQ, Edinburgh
from Rawlie (60%) on October 19th, 2007 (1 year ago)
This place is so famous but noone I know has ever gone, including me, until last night that is.
The decor is quite flash but also feels a little bit 70's with laquered walls in red and black but there is also something ubercool about that!
We chose our starter and main at the small bar as you enter where we had a lovely gin and tonic and were presented with some little amuse bouches which were absolutely delicious. We chose our wine for dinner with the help of the excellent somellier who was a delight to talk too and massively knowledgable - it was also nice to see a woman doing this job and doing it so well.
The highlight of this place is the food - it was excellent. I had foie gras to start with which was beautifully presented, was interestingly accompanied and it tasted magic. The main course (I had grouse) was similarly presented and equally as tasty. Desserts were lovely - rather than one big lump of stuff you were given small, rich and delicious treats - banana creme brulee, dense chocolate brownie and banana yogurt ice cream which was so smooth. The service was discreet and prompt and very, very polite without being distant, aloof or overly friendly. These people are obviously professionally trained.
It is expensive (we paid £57 a head for 3 courses not including wine) but then again you are definitely getting what you pay for and for a romantic dinner, special occaision and just a deliciously indulgent splurge then it's a great place to go. It's a michelin star and it's fab.

The Kitchin

Great place with excellent nosh. Very seasonal, fresh and well presented. The bellowing waiter was a bit offputting but to be honest you don't really care when you're about to stuff your face with top quality grub.
Nice, relaxed atmosphere too.
Altogether a brilliant addition to the Edinburgh eating scene. Fab food without stuffy/poncey-ness!

Oddfellows
14 Forrest Road, EH1 2QN, Edinburgh
from jcaughey (73%) on October 19th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Lacking in atmosphere - Oddfellows is 'odd'!
The food was really bad as well, my burger was soaked through with the salad dressing that had been very liberally poured over my salad and chips. Not especially cheap either for pub grub. Wouldn't bother with it to be honest.

Beanscene

Quite a nice little cafe (or is it a coffee house?!). Quite a lot of comfy leather sofas by the window. It's normally pretty full of students hanging out doing work on their laptops - the Apple shop is next door, after all. I can't believe they are actually being very productive though - there's always music playing and general cafe clatter and chatter background noise. Anyway, whatever - the coffee's pretty good.

Caffe Lucano
37-39 George IV Bridge, EH1 1EL, Edinburgh
from Paul (12%) on October 19th, 2007 (1 year ago)
A great spot on George IV bridge for a bite of lunch. If you are on your own or with just one other, grab a seat at the bench by the window - great for people watching! The food is good for lunch - nice sandwiches and paninnis. I've never eaten here in the evening, but I'm sure it will be equally pleasant!

Cafe Marlayne
7 Old Fishmarket Close, EH1 1RW, Edinburgh

from brian (23%) on October 18th, 2007 (1 year ago)
This is a nice little restaurant but not as nice as the Cafe Marlayne on Thistle Street. The one on Thistle Street has a nice cosy atmosphere but this one off the Royal Mile doesn't quite cut it. It's too bright and not really done out very nicely. And there's a hideous mural in the basement where we were sitting!
The food was still really good, but again, not as nice as on Thistle Street.

Hard Rock Cafe

It's OK but pretty expensive and is always busy - don't expect to pay less than £10 for any main courses. As expected portions are generous - well, it is American after all. The spare ribs are huge and very filling. Overall : OK.
