Old Orleans

Unit 7, Fountainpark, EH11 1AL, Edinburgh

2.5 from jcaughey (73%) on October 15th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Being a Cineworld card holder, I go to the cinema at Foutain Park... a lot... There are 2 choices for food Pizza Hut or Old Orleans. You know not to go to Pizza Hut (overpriced junk rubbish) go to Old Orleans!!!

It is a chain pub, I have been to one in Newcastle before and it was rubbish. The one at Foutain Park is the complete opposite. The service everytime I have been is excellent. The food is yummy and the menu choice is great. There are a few cocktails on there to sample as well. It is about the same price as a pizza from pizza hut for a main but is fresh and yummy.

I quite liked the fact that you are provided with crayons to doodle on the table cloth though I think that is probably for when the kids visit.

For a chain, Old Orleans in Edinburgh is fab!!!

Ok so i think I am going to have to update this review as I ate there last night and it was not good at all.

I have been several times this year and every time has been a positive eating experience.

Last night my little bro and I decided to pop in after watching a film at Cineworld. It is 2 4 1 on mains if you take your ticket stubs along with you so we did. We had to wait over 5 mins before we were paid any attention by the waiting staff to pay us any attention - given that there is a sign on the way in telling you to wait to be seated we didn't want to just stroll in. So eventually we were seated and given the free popcorn you always get. The waiter didn't really have any time to spend time with us and my chicken fajitas were grim. The chicken tasted of water and my fajitas were a bit crispy on the outskirts and soggy in the middle. My bro had a bacon and cheese burger - there was a pitiful amount of bacon and cheese and his chips tasted like they had been deep fried in very old oil. Not nice.

Service was bad too.

It’s a shame because every time I have eaten there previously I have had a good meal. Thank goodness it was 2 4 1 on mains otherwise I would have felt cheated.

I think it is a better bet to become a member of the casino at fountainbridge and use the restaurant there. The pizzas are cheap and delicious - think that’s where I will head for some post film scran next time...

I had the chilli con carne and it was like eating plastic. I'm sure I heard the sound of the microwave just before it came to the table.

The Mac Cheese and Haggis Parfilos are pretty decent - top pub grub and a decent atmosphere on a Friday night.

Not bad for a pint but I didn't really rate the food. They do give you loads of free crusty bread but they also gave my mate a day and a half sitting on the pan after he took on the mussels.

Pret a Manger

I agree with Jo. Pret is good but not THAT good Craig! I like how it is fresh and most of the food is lush... especially the carrot cake. However, similar to Chocolate Soup, it is over-priced.

There are other sandwich shops that are much better value and taste just as good. Pret remains a place I only go when I'm feeling a little more flush with my cash.

hmmm... I do like pret but it is VERY expensive!!!

The sushi at Pret is pretty good stuff too though unlike Craig, I would much rather go to M&S, much larger selection and on the whole cheaper too.

The Pret Jam donughts are THE best on the planet though.

Tonic

Tonic is renowned for being THE cocktail bar in Edinburgh - well, I don't know if I would go this far... Indeed, the cocktail list is extensive and the staff are very knowledgable. They even throw in the odd bit of fancy flaring. However, Tonic is, in my opinion, too small and is more like a living room than a cocktail bar.

I have been for breakfast a couple of times - it's fine, but a little pricey. However, it is George Street so wasn't really surprised.

I quite like going to Tonic for a cocktail or two but I would never plan on spending a whole night here; I don't think many people would.

Overall: Tonic is a good place to go for a couple of cocktails and then to move on but that's about it!

Pret a Manger

Ah, good old pret! A bastion of the high quality take away sandwich and perfect for those who only have 5 minutes in which to grab a quick lunch.

As everything is made fresh in each shop the food tends to be much juicier and thus tastier than the M&S alternative. From old favourites such as Crayfish and Rocket to the hangover busting All Day Breakfast there is something to tickle all palates. And if the scales have told you to cut back on the mayo - there are lots of healthy salads to tickle your tastebuds too.

Not a place to sit and linger, the stainless steel and long queues make this place far from relaxing but if you do have time, grab a bite from here and head off to Princes Street Gardens.

Oh, and 'big up' the carrot juice!

Zanzero

A bright and modern addition to Edinburgh's cafe/restaurant scene. The food is uncomplicated, fresh and allows great ingredients to shine - a far cry from some of the more traditional Italian restaurants which litter the city. The pizzas are to be highly recommended and as for the cakes, well I would make sure that you leaves some room for something rich, creamy and very naughty indeed.

If you don't have time for food the coffees are great and very good value. At £2 for a double espresso it puzzles me that Starbucks can survive in such close proximity to this place (a few yards down the hill). Only quibble would be the fact that every time I go I am given only one sugar with my coffee - some of us like it sweet and don't want to have to ask for more!

All in all, a great place for a bustling lunch. Just watch out for the acid green walls - not a great environment for those of a delicate constitution.

Villager

49-50 George IV Bridge, EH1 1EJ, Edinburgh

2.5 from irishphat (77%) on October 15th, 2007 (1 year ago)

Ok, went here for an impromptu Sunday nosh. She had very tasty peanutty chicken satay while I had a very tasty leek and spud soup (inc very nice bread and butter).

Then I had what I feel was a disappointing haddock and chips - it was just a bit bland. She had the venison burger which was as Rachel said, very nice.

Tricky menu if you are looking for low-carb options.

Service was friendly and generally fine, music was good and not too loud and my chips were tasty. Didn't have dessert as we were in a rush. 34 quid including 2 drinks and tip. Not cheap but not scary either. Starters were the best bit all round.

Wouldn't turn my nose up at it. If they showed sports I'd go here instead of frankies.
