The Olive Branch Bistro
19 Colinton Road, EH10 5DP, Edinburgh
from Amanda (18%) on August 12th, 2007 (1 year ago)
The restaurant was full and had a good buzz. I had excellent homemade beef burger with chips which were thin and crispy, just how I like them. My friend had very good salmon and roasted vegtables.
The service was good and the music not too loud. If you are in the area and wondering where to eat I would recommend here.

If it's standard American fair that you want, then this place is fine. It has a good location, situated on the main pedestrian strip of the Royal Mile. I went there for a pre-comedy dinner and was very impressed that mid festival at 1900h we walked straight in and they got a table for seven together for us promptly. The staff were friendly and helpful. We were a little sceptical about the number of tables around us that didn't have their food yet, but this fear didn't bear out.
I had the Bison Burger. It came with chips, and a decent salad and was pretty tasty. The décor in the restaurant is as you would imagine from the name; dark and full of big American signs. Whilst there is as much soul to it as an Irish pub in the Alps, it is by no means unpleasant. When we came to pay the bill, I chose to pay by VISA and as so often happens nowadays, the girl entered the amount that was due and confirmed it, then handed me the handset to enter my PIN - at no point could I check the amount I was confirming that I was paying. I pointed this out to the girl, who was very understanding and offered to cancel the transaction and start it again. I didn't see the need. When she then moved on to a friend at the table who was paying separately, she took my comments on board and asked them to first confirm the amount, before entering their PIN. This positive approach to customer's comments was refreshing in an age of stroppy teenage waiters.
Would I recommend this restaurant? For a big group of people more interested in the company than the food, then I would say it's fine, you'll get decent food and good service, but this is not a place to take your loved one - as demonstrated by the couple in their 50s sitting at the table next to us who were facing one other, each with their own newspaper laid out in front of them!

Meadowood Cafe
15 Bread Street, EH3 9AL, Edinburgh
from nettles (95%) on August 9th, 2007 (1 year ago)
When I stumbled upon Meadowood I really thought I was stumbling upon a little gem of a place. When I had time to grab something before a movie at the filmhouse, I realized that many others have also discovered this place! It was lunch and a busy one at that. The small place was completely packed out and the staff were running about in the tiny space that allowed it. The menu is half bubble teas, milk and plain, with or without pearls. It was the first time I have seen a place in Edinburgh serving these Taiwanese(?) drinks. I was tempted before I saw the price! Having spent time in Taiwan and regularly treating myself to one of these drinks I rarely paid over 50p. Here the drinks are all priced over 2.50! Even for just soy milk! Next time I will splurge.
The rest of the menu is dim sum, dumplings mostly, a selection of soups, with noodles and without, and bento type boxes. I went for the mixed dim sum selection which were just a vartiety of dumplings - 10 in all. They were all meat but I am not sure this is always the case as they do have veggie dumplings. The dumplings were fresh that I amsure of but were a little lacking in flavour or this may be because I had to scarf them all down before I ran to the movie. They were moist and there was a selecton and came with dumpling sauce, the brown kind, and sauce the spicy kind and this sauce was also a bit sweet, more like the thai style sweet chilli sauce.
Think I will visit with friends in tow next time to try some of the soups and give the dumplings more time. And I will go for the milk tea.

The Peking Palace
38-39 Elm Row, EH7 4AH, Edinburgh
from robertjamessmall (11%) on August 9th, 2007 (1 year ago)
A true life saver when I was a student. When food was short, and energy was low I could look from my window over the road to get the delivery number from the neon sign of the resturant. Good grub and good value, although they did over charge me by a £100 once. Got it back though as well as some free prawn crackers.
Never ate in, was nothing special inside if I remember.

Le Marche Francais
9a West Maitland Street, EH12 5DS, Edinburgh
from Tomg (12%) on August 9th, 2007 (1 year ago)
Oh dear, this place used to be great. A bland redecoration has robbed the restaurant of its charm. Previously, the slow pace seemed in keeping with a the feel of a lazy afternoon and too much red wine (which is still good value and an interesting, varied selection). However, on my last visit the service was frustrating. We watched the waitress eat three courses in front of the hungry customers before we abandoned the hope of dessert. A great pity too because their pastries used to be a highlight. This place might have been my favourite restaurant but change is not always a good thing. The deli counter still has the same great selection of luxuries to take home.

The Ping On Chinese Restaurant
26 Deanhaugh St, EH4 1LY, Edinburgh
from Tomg (12%) on August 9th, 2007 (1 year ago)
But the food is dire. Everything is doused in a generic take away Chinese sauce. It is below average for a take away, and considering the very low standard for Chinese take away food in Edinburgh, I couldn't recommend eating here. If you've had a few too many beers you won't care that the food isn't remotely Chinese but is there a Chinese restaurant in Edinburgh that is actually somewhat authentic? - do eat battered sausage in Beijing? For about the same price you can eat well in Stockbridge.

Khukuri
8 West Maitland Street, EH12 5DS, Edinburgh
from nettles (95%) on August 9th, 2007 (1 year ago)
A friend and I went to The Khukuri the other night expecting some interesting and new (to us) Nepalese food. Instead we ate some really good Indian. I understand that Nepalese cuisine is quite similar to Indian but it also should have hints of northern Chinese cooking and other countries of that region. Unfortunately, I could not find any indication of these on the menu or when I spoke with our waiter who when asked if he had any recomendations could not formulate any sort of opinion. Usually this is a bad sign.
But we trucked on. We shared a starter of Dolakha raja jhinga which is described on the menu as "king prawn cooked with fresh garlic, lemon, methi, tomato, and dhania and served with a small chapati". This was excellent. All the flavours coming through, but what is methi? I dont know, but it was delicious. For out mains we had Namche bhenda, a lamb dish and sag paneer, the ubiquitous indian spinach and cheese dish. The lamb was tender and flavourful in a wonderful sauce, just enough spice. The sag was a bit disappointing, the paneer pieces were not as tangy and tender as they should have been. We also had naan bread and rice, both up to par.
If we do visit again we will be sure to have our before dinner drinks there as they were really cheap! Lessons learned. A good place for a curry or curryish meal and since the place was completely booked out after 730 I think there is a chance I missed out on something.

Bad Ass Bistro
167 Rose Street, EH2 4LS, Edinburgh
from Meng (86%) on August 8th, 2007 (1 year ago)
First time round I was impressed, (would've given this place 3.5, maybe 4 stars), that was last year. Good sized burgers, decent chips. 6.75 for a pub lunch (le gourmet gastropub ahoy!).
This time round, my burger with bacon and blue cheese came pretty blackened (and so did my dining partner's, but she likes it well well well charcoal done) which was slightly off-putting, but I was hungry, and scoffed the lot anyway.
Decor can be a bit dingy, and the crowd a mix of suits and tourists, but the name, as ever, brings giggles to those with more puerile thoughts.
I'll probably come back for a bite again and if next time round the chef pays attention to the microwave/cooker/fryer/etc, maybe it'll be better. S'pity the burgers just aren't quite as bad-@ssed as they used to be.

Montpelier's
159-161 Bruntsfield Place, EH10 4DG, Edinburgh
from Dave (18%) on August 7th, 2007 (1 year ago)
Went with high expectations of a good food and a pleasant night, food was bitterly disappointing! Ordered mussels for starter and a bowl with exactly 13 small mussels arrived, then went on to have the lamb shank which had almost no flavour at all. The atmosphere was okay but over all was a poor evening the meal cost 50 quid all in including a bottle of wine (2 of us) so it wasn't mega expensive. The service was okay. If someone was to ask me if I'd recommend this place the answer is definitely no if it's good tasty food you're after this isn't the choice for you.

King's Balti
79 Buccleuch Street, EH8 9LS, Edinburgh
from mdavidson (90%) on August 7th, 2007 (1 year ago)
Good value and good food. On my most recent visit to King's Balti I was part of a group of 20. We all opted for the "party menu" which was great value and filled everyone up (they brought out massive platters of pakoras, samosas and bhajis for starters) for a very reasonable £14 (or thereabouts) per head.
