Jimmy's Good Food
179 Bruntsfield Place, EH10 4DG, Edinburgh
from badgrs (21%) on August 25th, 2007 (1 year ago)
Was sorely disappointed with this place - just as expensive as any Chinese and the food was less than desirable. Spring rolls didn't taste of much and tofu was horrible, ended up eating half of the Mrs' dish. Reminded me more of a deep-fry chippy in Glasgow than a good Chinese, there's better ones down in Morningside.

I'd also highly recommend the fry up - slightly on the expensive side for the portions but well worth it! Good atmosphere, plenty of staff. You might have to wait a while for a table during peek times but there's enough there that one comes up soon enough. Didn't try the cakes but they looked good!

Spirit of Thai
44 Grindlay Street, EH3 9AP, Edinburgh
from Donna (17%) on August 24th, 2007 (1 year ago)
It got off to a good start here, the chicken satay starter was amazing, the satay sauce was fab. However, it was short lived - the main course thai curry was not great, the chicken was slimy and the sauce watery. Really disappointing after such a good start.

Kismot

Well, I must disagree wth the other review written by "A Curry Fan" slightly...
They are definitely right that the food is great and the service very friendly. It truly is also a family business and this comes across in the friendly, laid back attitude of the staff.
I had lamb jalfrezie, which was hotter than I would normally expect a jalfrezie to be. But it did warn me on the menu, so I certainly can't complain about that. It tasted excellent.
But I wouldn't rave about the atmosphere. The lighting's too bright and they have this nasty trolley thing going around that they stack the dirty plates on. Definitely not a nice touch! I would hardly say it's a hidden gem either - it has a very prominent frontage on St Leonard's Street - one of the main arteries into the centre of town from the south!
They don't have a license and soft drinks seem to be poured from bottles (I had a slightly flat glass of "Coke"), so I would definitely recommend taking your own drink - it's only 50p per person.

China Palace
27 Bernard Street, EH6 6SH, Edinburgh

It's near my work. They have one of those all you can eat buffets where they give you a container which you are to treat as a trough and stuff as much as you can inside, close, and go. Not bad for one of these places. Had your regular array of UK style Chinese food (ie. nothing at all like Chinese food) Lots of fried stuff, prawns, mushrooms, chicken with the appropriate hyper colour sauces. And not many veggies involved. The crispy seaweed was especially tasty - I had not had it before. tasked like deep fried essence of the sea.
Overall, not bad for a lunch stop when you are craving cheap Chinese.

Pizza Express

Nicest Pizza Express in town, with a lovely outside area right by the Water of Leith. As usual, food is very nice at Pizza Express prices.

Great pub with a great atmosphere. A nice outside area to sit if the weather is warm, and a great selection of real ales. The burgers are to die for, and real chips too! Also very good freshly made sandwiches at good prices.

Very compact place if you eat inside, but luckily this place has a terrace overlooking the Grassmarket that's rather nice. Good food, not too pricey and good service.

Nice atmosphere, lots to look at and good food and drink, if a little pricey. Can be packed, so be warned.
