Petit Paris
17 Queensferry Street, EH2 4QW, Edinburgh

Petit Paris in Queensferry Street is in a charming setting. There's a wonderful bright, airy ambience. The quality of the food was very high indeed (and the gorgeous cured ham starter was gigantic!). A couple of minor hiccups in service, though - forgetting to bring one of our party of twelve her aperitif, and later, bringing coffee but forgetting to bring milk. However, all things considered, I would definitely go back again, and would recommend it to others.

The Basement has a great lunchtime deal. Yesterday I had a tomato and red pepper soup. Lovely and spicy with generous chunks of fresh bread. This was followed by a beautiful ribeye steak, served with sauteed potatoes and a slab of garlic butter.
Brilliantly done and at £7.50 for 2 courses, fantastic value.
Very friendly service too.

I went past this new place at the weekend. Seeing it was very busy went in with my partner. We had a meal and a few drinks. I had the koftas, my partner had the steak. Didn't wait very long at all and the food was fantastic. Shame the service let them down.

As I had never eaten Jamaican food before (or certainly not that I was aware of) I was intrigued as to what this little restaurant would have to offer. I was not disappointed! As I walked in I felt as if I was on holiday – the restaurant had a lovely ambience with bright red walls and obscure wall hangings. It was nice to go to a restaurant that was unique as Edinburgh, in my opinion, severely lacks these types of places.
The menu was interesting and varied. My partner and I both went for fish dishes; both were fantastic. I had sea bass and it came with rice, salad and lots of veg – the portion was extremely generous. The fish was cooked to perfection and it was such a tasty, satisfying meal that I have absolutely no complaints! For desert I had a rum based chocolate cake to satisfy my sweet tooth. Again, no complaints!
Service was good. Their only downfall was that they didn’t check up on us when we were eating our mains to make sure everything was OK… as I used to work in the industry I think this helps differentiate between good and bad service.
One other complaint is that the restaurant was quite warm & stuffy; possibly a result of all the candles they had burning or maybe, because they had cramped one too many tables into quite a small area.
The bill came to £40 overall which included a bottle of wine, two main courses & two deserts – pretty reasonable I would say. From Sunday to Thursday they also do BYO but this doesn’t include Friday and Saturday nights.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant – it is unique, the food is tasty and, for the short time that I was there, I felt as if I were on holiday (surely always a good thing!) For those reasons and more, I would definitely return.

EXCELLENT FOOD / AMAZING VALUE
I was taken here as a birthday treat and was not disappointed. Three courses of gloriously tasty and superbly executed food. An assiette of duck opened the evening and paved the way for a deliciously hearty main of lamb (cutlets and braised). A dessert of ice-cream and date loaf, accompanied by a wonderfully creamy rhubarb concoction, provided a suitably decadent finale.
This food is on a par with many of Edinburgh's Michelin rated eateries but comes at a fraction of the price: three courses for and draw-dropping £28! The phrase"value for money" most definitely applies. GO NOW!
P.S. Fine wine enthusiasts will spend a large portion of the evening drooling over the extensive wine list!

The Dogs
110 Hanover Street, EH2 1DR, Edinburgh

I never give 5 star reviews (nowhere's "perfect"), but this relatively new restaurant on Hanover Street where Tijuana Yacht Club used to be came pretty close. Three of us ate there last night (Friday). We had a fantastic meal. Excellent value, no nonsense British food well cooked and served with a smile.
We started the meal with a bottle of English Chapel Down bubbly. At £40 it was a bit of a splurge, but worth every penny. The wine list continued to entice us and we enjoyed an excellent red Italian (Primitivo Bricco, I think) with the rest of the meal. It was one of about 30 red wines they had to choose from under £20.
I had wild mushroom rarebit to start. Very tasty, and a good size for a starter. For main I had one of their specials - a roll of lamb breast. Quite a fatty cut of meat but beautifully tender and the accompanying veg was perfect. And a huge amount of food for less than a tenner! One of my friends had boiled salt beef for his main which wasn't really to my taste but he raved about.
For dessert a couple of us had bread and butter pudding and the other had rhubarb and custard.
With the bubbly and one of their more expensive reds and 3 courses each, the bill still came in at under £40 a head. It would be possible to eat for half that price if you just go for 2 courses and a glass of wine - absolutely unbeatable value for this quality of food in this part of town.
I will be returning soon! Make sure to book - they still seem to be riding the wave of a bunch of good reviews they received upon opening.

Sandwiches are expensive but definitely worth it so I treat myself from time to time. For a cheaper option try the soups (they have 2 choices everyday). I get a soup "to go", it comes with 2 large slice of bread (2 different breads as well) so it makes a decent lunch and the price is just over £3.
